I got this synth now, and it's interesting to note that the patches Jexus has created here are easily replicable. Whereas the patches he made on the DX7 were so out of this world I never figured them out. The Alpha Juno is a much simpler synth to program too. I like it a lot. It doesn't match the DX7 for bells and glassy hit sounds in general, and the DX7 sound is more suitable to ambient, but the Alpha Juno betters it by producing powerful dark sci-fi synth sounds - suits harscher music.
Im glad you show everyone that a synth is limited only by the user! Im sick of people saying this synth sucks or this one is better for this reason when it is clear that if there is programming available the limitations are up to the user.
@Olorintube I agree with your comment. It's like he says himself: "showing you not what a synthesizer can do, but what a man can do with a synthesizer." Jexus loves dark 80's vibes and C64 computer games, so that's what we get to hear in his demos, regardless of synth.

@MrKnnknn The noise on a Juno 2 very much sounds like that. It's one of the reasons it's my favorite Juno. I own a 106 and a 60 and my most inspirational stuff comes from the Juno 2. Only thing that hurts is having to edit it from a VST.
@proszto He's using MIDI input for the notes, as shown by the 'Midi' in curly writing in the top right of the screen. He does that for many of his videos of synthesizers with MIDI.
I was given one of these for free by someone who I did some work for. It was just sitting in the closet in its box. Since it was an older one, I agreed to take it since it might have some cool sounds on it. I was right. Lucky me!
This thing is SO POWERFUL for a one oscillator synth. I love mine and wouldn't give it up for anything. Roland really knew what they were doing back in the 80's. These things last forever if maintained correctly. Too bad Roland is degrading they're legacy with crappy re-issues. (Except the TR-8)
Fun! I particularly like the noisy patches you're demonstrating here - some sounds one doesn't typically associate with an '80s digital-analogue synth. Gotta love the total programmability of these old synthesizers. (I've had an Alpha-Juno 2 since 1986, and still enjoy playing around with it from time to time. It can do a few things the newer synths don't do -- just too bad it has such limited polyphony.)
I'm not sure, but I think the Alpha Juno has tape in and out sockets on the back for saving settings, so presumably that's the only connection you can use to do it.
I'm actually very curious what you think of the Deepmind, since it was based in part on the Juno 106. I'd also be curious if it is capable of anything this gritty and charismatic.
hot damn that's a tasty sounding synth. I'm guessing all of those are custom presets yeah? Relatively speaking, how easy is it to make your own presets? Is it a lot of menu diving or is it pretty straight forward? I've seriously been considering getting one of these.
@Hedgeyy hi what is it about the alpha junos you want to learn, if you go to yahoo groups , there is an mks 50/alpha juno group where you can ask questions downloaqd patches and also there is virtual pg300 emulator (im assuming you are using windows lol) however if not there is a mac program .
Ive used one since they were first sold, was never impressed by it. I use it solely for a simple lead synth sound anymore. By creating a one note chord memory, it only allows one key at a time to be played, that with portamento make a fun patch to play.
Guess it depends on whether you like that classic, clean Roland sound. If you do, this is an under-rated classic. I’ll take an Alpha Juno 2 over a 106 any day. Never played a 60, so I can’t speak on that.
Probably cause you're not a programmer if you know how to use the filter ,waveforms pulse wave/speed and chorus you can get some amazing pads , funky bass, brass & leeds etc.
@@georgegeorgio1751 more just not appreciating it as much as I should, it was my main board from 1986-2016 so I probably programmed it more than 99.9% of other owners. I would have loved the outboard programming box they have now back then.
It compliments the JX-3P better than the 8P imo (as they have different filters and tone). 8P has a few too many similarities to the Alpha (but the alpha sounds much nicer anyway).

Agree! The Juno 2 is just as cool as 6,60, but stable with more feutures and it just WORKS all the time. Dont bother the old ones....

It won't do the bells as well as there's no FM on the alpha, they only look similar because of the mbrane buttons, 2 totally different synths, cheers.
No the Alpha is suited to many styles i program funky brass , leeds and bass and of course you can also get great sci fi sweeps and pads etc.
Also all you need is an editor for the dx to understand it's architecture better once you do you'll be able to get sounds quite easily.

Damn, this video is old but still, it is one of those rare videos where this synth sounds as it should! Other videos make it sound like a toy piano.
Killer synth !!! What starts at 5:38 is absolutely great. Very cool and creative video ... as usual ;-)
The only video where I heard good lead sounds. All other making just some mellow, no one awake beast in it which is very capable of.

GREAT MAN! With this shit you can revive 80's synth pop, all sounds are similar...Watching this makes me wish I could play keyboards.
The envelope is the curve that tells the Synth how to manipulate some parameters, like the filter frequency or the loudness.
joey beltram would love that 1st patch :)

Juno 2 has that classis sound used in many 90's retro house records, I want one!
