ALPHA JUNO 2 - Is this the best or worst synth Roland ever made? Analog Poly from 1985

  • The represents Roland last attempt at a paradigm shift in analog synthesis from 1985 (although it was not technically their last analog synth, which would be the JX-10 which came out the following year.) They wouldn't come back to analog for 30 years.
Many people don't like the alpha's because they don't quite sound like the juno's, mostly because of the filter, but I'm here to give you my impressions, good and bad, of this underrated analog poly from the 80's.
NOTE: I mentioned I didn't think there was a highpass in the synth architecture but I was wrong, and the explains why a lot of the patches sound thinner.
Also, I say the price for the synth was $420, which it was not. The launch price which was $895 in America, I was going off this post from Roland which was converting yen to dollars: 1985: α JUNO-1 Pronounced “alpha JUNO-1”, this was a low-cost model in the JUNO series. It had 49 keys, and a specially designed sound-generator IC. Although it had 6-voice polyphony and 128 sound memory, it was below ¥100,000 in Japan (roughly $420) - quite an appealing combination.

I’ve had a Roland SynthPlus-10 (Consumer rebranded Alpha Juno 1) since 1997 and love it! When you’re on the “What The” patch, hit the ENV TIME button on the left side controls and crank down the value with the Alpha Dial to shorten the times for the entire envelope. There’s the Hoover in all it’s wildness!

I've had my Alpha Juno-2 since new in 1986. Over the years, I've had a love/hate relationship with it, wishing I had instead gotten a 106 at the time, but a couple of years ago I finally bought a hardware controller (Retroaktiv PG-50) for my Juno-2 and it has definitely opened it up and aided in a renewed love for the old girl, especially with outboard effects.

Great video showcasing a lot of patches and sharing some of the story from back in the day! Kudos! Love the Alpha Juno2 because it has a really solid build and you can use a controller or VST panel for it to dig really deep. Since it is built like a tank, has almost no faders and buttons that could collect dust as a sidejob as many other (previous) synths from that era it is still very reliable to this date. Controller wise you can have a look at the D-Tronics DT300 or the RetroAktiv PG-50 and hopefully you already did as this really makes live easy and - in our personal experience - opens up the possibilities and you get more 'one with the instrument' so to say.

From what I've seen in interviews, David Wise sampled the AJ2 a bunch on Stickerbrush for that evolving resonant filter bass line. Also speaking to the high pass filter thing in this synth, much like in the other analog synths Roland put out at the time, if you want that donk, just set the high pass to 0 for that extra bass. :P
Also about DCO vs VCO I feel is a weird discussion. Because the JX8P is also entirely a DCO affair and that thing will sound as warm and bassy as anyone could possibly ever need. I think it comes down to oscillator architecture more than oscillator topography.

    • @VultureCulture
      @VultureCulture  3 роки тому +1

That's a good trick to know! I didn't realize the Alpha's had the extra donk at 0 trick too.
To clarify on my thoughts on DCO vs VCO, I think it is really that there's only one DCO instead of two like a JX-8P. So like you said, more oscillator architecture than type. I haven't gotten a chance to make my own sounds but I'm curious if the static nature of the sound can be counteracted with a lot of chorus.

I purchased a new Juno Alpha 2 in 1988. JunoA2 without the patch controller was not fun. IF you bought the controller it doubled the cost of the keyboard. The JunoA2 DID have the best keybed Roland ever made (when new). My JunoA2 is gone, sold in a divorce, I don't miss it. For the last 20 years been building my studio back up, the Roland Gaia SH01 is the best poly-synth I have ever owned. I want digital for poly synths and analog for mono synths. Today synths make 80s and 90s 20s synths look and sound like toys. Give me a DM12, Minilogue, XD, DSI, Arturia MatrixBrute, JupiterX, Fantom (ZenCore), V-piano, Clavinova piano, ModWave, Opsix, WaveState, Summit, System8, PolyBrute, Dreadbox, and more....all greatly improved synths for the 21st century....then....match these synths with effects we have access to today....and we are making sounds NO ONE has heard before. (if you want nostalgia, and the limited sound modulation of the old stuff, then buy old junk and get ready for annual repair bills).
I have no problem making my Roland Gaia or my JunoA2 "warm". I use a cheap graphic EQ and overload it with the synth, the little bit of distortion and drive that comes from EQ drive these synths deep into warmth territory. Too much warmth depth will not work in a mix anyway, I orchestrate synths/groove boxes/samplers/digital piano/guitar, I don't want BIG analog sound, it does not mix well. BIG analog sound is great when just noodling with one synth in front of you, for serious composers like me, BIG analog needs toned back and is a waste of drive. BIG analog belongs on a stage, not in the studio.

The Alpha Juno is both one of the best AND worst Roland synths IMO. The interface was woeful, but suited the majority who just used presets. For those of us who like to tweak, there are many great editors on PC, Mac, IOS and hardware too. The only thing left I don't like about 'em is the non resonant filters. But a great synth with its own character!

Similar to Roland JDXI or UDO Super 6.
It uses a general purpose (Intel 8032) 8 bit CPU to generate waveforms that goes to the DAC before continuing to the analog domain (filter, mod, BBD chorus, output etc)

Compared to a crisp Jupiter 8 the Junos has, at least to my ears, a less crisp and, well, digital-ish sound while not being VST digital if you know what I mean.

I wouldn’t get a Juno to play realistic or “warm analog” sounds.
