That's how I've always played defense during HS and now my pickup games. Lateral slides and always looking to bump early with the chest. I didn't realize that was uncommon until I watched this video
Hey I have a tip that will guarantee you the win next time go Watch Coach Mike’s Andre Iguodala defensive breakdown to me it was the most useful I think it would help you out
The knee is definitely not a dirty tactic. He’s beating the defender to the ball. Could be called a foul but disguises it with him using his body next. Really brilliant actually and not a dirty move either
Bro... yea defense is something else. Furthermore, this individual defense isn't even all there is to it. It also gets very detailed when it comes to team D.
If it wasn't for Dort we wouldve lost in 5 and every loss wouldve likely been a blowout. Game 1 in particular James Harden dominated and was literally doing what he wanted, in game 2 OKC played much better and the game was much closer with Dort making an INSTANT impact which was felt for the rest of the series. The great thing about dort as well is that guarding James Harden is usually a job for an entire team, Lu Dort was quite literally able to handle Harden himself for the most part and that made sure everyone else didn't have to sag off or help! I can't believe an Undrafted Rookie who made around $113,000 that season completely clamped up Harden all by himself. Never have i seen anything like that in my life
About the swipe down, from my personal experience with a player who has success with it at my local park, it seems to me that the swipe is primarily mental. Getting the ball stripped on a shot is coded to suck for a lot of players, so I'd assume it works well because it messes with a player psychologically. On another point, it also tricks the offensive player into believing you have more range (close enough to put a hand on the ball).
@coachMike are you ever gonna make a lockdown defense on Rodman, Metta, Draymond, Bowen, CP3, Rondo, & Frank I can keep going I like your vids there awesome I’m a big defensive guy myself.
Great👏🏾 I didn't hear you swear one time. Too many people do. Because they dont know that Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.” Matthew 15:11 “Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.”
coach, like lu dort how do i develop myself to not slide backwards or at an angle but slide laterally and not get scared of taking ocntact like lu dort ?
coach when we slide laterally we slide laterally according to what? lie do we move in line of the box or a semicircular path ?like for example if the offensive plar is at the wing do i face him square like diagonal fro the basket and slide laterally from that angle or force him towards the sidelines? i hope you understand what i mean
When I do contact slides on defense people are calling me for a block. Arms are up and out, not reaching in, I’m in a defensive stance and moving laterally, contact is taken right in the center of my chest. What differentiates the contact slide from a blocking foul?
Lu Dort will lock down your best player and let guys like Bazley, SGA, future Lamelo Ball, future Cade Cunningham and possibly future Jalen Green (If Rockets trade Harden and Westbrook this year. Okc owns Houston 2021 pick) T off on you. The future is bright in loud city.
Genuinely asking, I get the feeling my friends think I hit them with blocking fouls, but I swear how I play epitomizes the contact slide (I'm one of the faster ones in my group). Is someone able to explain why the contact slide Dort excellently uses is legal? And better yet, is anyone able to differentiate it from a blocking foul? My main struggle of understanding this is that my friends make the point that the feet have to be set, but the contact slide we see here proves this is not completely correct (several clips showcase Dort's feet aren't set when chest contact is initiated). I see other defenders like Draymond green utilize this technique as well offering a chest bump. For reference, I am almost never in a "hip to hip" striding situation with my friends when playing D, and to my understanding it's almost always illegal for defense to initiate contact in that scenario. So really I'd love some assistance for more of an explanation of the contact slide.
5:06 or strike your hand and arm toward in the middle of his pull up flow. This is what Jeremy Lin does. They can't pull up if you met them at their midsection striking at the ball. It's either a steal or off rhythm jumpshot
I think he’s a good defender but the only reason harden was struggling was because the thunder were playing a whole lot of help defense in the gaps. And also double teams
@@buzzerbeater3350 he’s in his second year, Kawhi couldn’t shoot when he started either and now look at him. Dort’s very hot or cold on his shooting so he has the potential to be a good enough shooter
@Junelle Tubania You should read my other comment for this video praising him. But you are wrong about shooting though. Elfrid Payton, Iman Shumpert and Ben Simmons are all good defenders and still can not shoot.
The amount of energy and ‘dog’ in Dort is insanity.
Not really, it's far more sports taxing on the body but I feel you
Crazy how this guy is going to inspire so many others to play D just like him
I’m inspired already lol

This is how defense is taught in FIBA academies. You slide lateral and seek a "chest stop."
He's from Canada and probably played soccer a bit. Could explain why he uses this tactic in the NBA
@@MickeyG-fs5wj also played american football
@@MickeyG-fs5wj Yes, Dort used to be a goalkeeper as a kid.
7:00 imagine setting 3 screens and still seeing Lu Dort at the other side of it
He is a beast on defense 🤣

@Shaolin DonkeyPunch You mad because you wouldn't be able to score on me?
@@kevindam1946 U good man, dw about him

Yea aight😂
Every time I do it during pickup games the guy driving calls a foul on me.
I tried your upward stance against my dad, although I did lose 7-6 . I did a great job at contesting his shots and getting steals.
Good job! Nice to see more players appreciate defence.

became one of my favorite player because of the playoffs
And mine!
Thanks for advices
It helps a lot in defence
My oponent plays like harden but tonight i locked him
No space to shoot
Only switches let him score
Suggestion: lockdown breakdown on 19-20 NBA 1st team all-defense
Holy crap I never realized how much thought you can put into defense

I bet you love the hell out of Herb Jones. That mans defense is otherworldly.
