Adam is so amazing. He never overdoes the percussion. If it's something like this, he takes a really light, er, hand, but he will absolutely pull out all the stops on a rocking one. He's not just really realistic, he's also really intelligent and emotionally in tune with the song. He really is the heartbeat and soul of the group.
Vince has appeared with the Eagles so much they say he is officially part of the group. Vince started writing this song when Keith Whitley died of acute alcohol poisoning. He "finished" it after his brother died. He broke up singing it at the Possum's funeral so Patty Loveless had to take it over for him. Vince never thought the song was complete so he added this verse: "You're safely home in the arms of Jesus / Eternal life, my brother's found / The day will come I know I'll see him / In that sacred place, on that holy ground." Vince Gill is thought by many to be the best voice in Nashville.
Oh, this one's a tear jerker. The guys covered it beautifully. Chance was singing bass, though, not Tim. He was singing baritone. Rob's voice was perfect for this song. He sounds like a male angel.
This song always gets me because I come from a military family. Home Free did an amazing rendition of this song. It’s author, Vince Gill, is a country music legend and an amazing guitarist. You really should read more about his awards. Anyway, thanks for another great Home Free song reaction.
As a Iraqi freedom veteran this hits me hard. My grandma loved this song.....their version of Travelin Soldier (original by Dixie Chicks) and Home Free's twist on it was relatable to me.
Vince Gill has had a long career in rock and country. He sang back in the 1970s with a country-rock group called Pure Prarie League, then had a string of hits as a solo country artist. He is a virtuoso guitarist and has done a lot of backup vocals and duets with almost everybody. The Eagles called on him to round out the lineup after Glenn Frey died, but he's not a member of the classic Eagles lineup.
When I see a live video of Home Free, I get fascinated watching the hand signals & eye contacts. I think it would take a while to understand each other's signals & even more rehearsal to perfect the harmonies. This is such a beautiful song & so beautifully sung! If you haven't seen the 'Country Rebel Church Sessions' live rendition - it's terrific.
They do this song in what is called the church version, and its just them sitting in a church singing this, you may want to give that a listen. Its much easier to follow.
I actually hadn’t heard this before, and I had tears before the second verse. My lord. And also, weighted blankets/bass - I never made that connection before and suddenly I understand why they both hit me the way they do 😳
Vince Gill wrote this song after his brother passed. It is beautiful. Home free does this song just as amazing. Love watch your reactions Your chemistry and sense of humor is great..💓
This song is so special to me. My father was a Music Minister and this was one of his favorite songs to sing. This is the only version that I able to listen to now. Also, because we had a recording of daddy singing this, we played it at his funeral. I am pretty sure that was the last time I was able to listen to my daddy's version.
I am so sorry for your loss; I know the pain can be piercing. I hope someday you will be able to listen to your father's version again - I see it as his gift to you.
@@lauranichols945 I am sure one day I will be. It's been not quite 2 years. There are still times with Home Free's version that I break down too. But not nearly with Vince Gill's version. Daddy's version is just so raw for me. But, one day I will be able to listen.
You definitely need to rewatch this but the church version .. they sang it live for Country Rebel .. and you'll also see that it's not Tim doing the bass
It is super emotional. Whether it's this version or Vince Gill's they are just beautiful. Vince's obviously packs enormous pinch emotionally when you hear why he wrote it. But there's something infinitely beautiful about the harmonies.
This is a truly beautiful song and a wonderful video to tell a story. They also do this song live at the chirch sessions, I think somehow it is more powerful. Would love to hear your reaction to both songs.
Really enjoyed the reaction. Don't wait too long to grab tickets they've been selling out. Please do the "Butts remix" funny as heck and has Chris in it, one of the founding members that went on to do his own thing. He's Adam's brother.
Love your reactions. I can't make it through this video without tears. Ever. Vince Gill - the author - sang it at George Jones' funeral and couldn't make it through. It's such an emotional song.
Vince Gill has over 2500 album credits in his career. Primary or Lead Vocals, Harmony vocals, Guitar (acoustic and electric), Mandolin and Composer. An absolutely amazingly talented man with more album credits than most people on earth. Not to mention his 18 albums, 16 compilation albums, 7 number 1 hits and about 40 top 10 hits. He wrote this song, and it has become one of the most popular funeral songs ever.
Vince Gill was in Pure Prairie League back in the 70's. Vince wrote this song after his brother's and his friend Keith Whitley's deaths. It was performed as a bluegrass arrangement. Vince and Keith were in bluegrass bands together over many years.
Vince Gill joined the Eagles after Glenn Frey passed away. Vince wrote after Keith Whitley & later Vince's brother passed away. It probably has been played at more funerals than song ever.
This song was written by Vince Gill for his brother who died. It appears to me grandpa was talking to his grandson about losing his brother who died “a long time ago”. Looks like WW2, it appears grandpa came home alive, went to see his sister in law to present the dog tags from her husband, his brother! My guess anyway.
Vince Gill was one of the original members of Pure Prairie League before becoming a country star. He has filled in with the Eagles from time to time. He started writing Go Rest High On That Mountain after his good friend country star Keith Whitley passed away. Several years later he completed the song after his brother passed away. He also sang this song at Country Legend George Jones funeral where he got very emotional and barely made it through
You really need to react to the live performances from the reality competition The Sing Off. Then you will really hear what they can do live, but with much better audio quality than the cell phone videos out there. The Sing Off was also 2013 so imagine how much better they are now.
I totally agree! Everyone should listen to the Sing-Off series Home Free does. It’s great, but you can tell from then until now how much they have grown vocally as well as a group/band❣️❣️❣️♥️
It's the same guy who leaves & returns but he returns with his brother's tags & puts them over the picture. Many years down the track & this guy is a grandfather laying his brother's tags at the cemetary with his grandson.
ok guys, in the beginning it shows the grandpa and he talks about his brother, he tells the boy you didnt get to meet him, it was his brother he lost, it shows him going off to war then coming back and showing his wife that his brother was killed. then years later showing/telling his grandson about the brother.
Vince Gill wrote this song for his brother who passed away. If you want to see a tearjerker of him singing it, listen to the performance at Charlie Daniel's funeral :'(
Great reaction, thank you very much - the story is a little unclear, but I think the guy in uniform is the grandpa, and he comes back to his wife, but his brother is killed. One thing to notice - Vince Gill is not only a wonderful singer, he's a great guitarist as well, and the original has a guitar solo, which the Home Free version replaces with Amazing Grace. Sometimes they'll do an "instrumental" break, or arrange a guitar part out altogether, but in this case adding Amazing Grace just adds to the beauty of the song. One more example of how Tim is not only a great bass singer, but can carry a lead just as well as any of them.
Grandpa delivered his brothers dog tags to his sister in law. Both brothers were serving at the same time although in different branches of the military. The uniform of the husband was different than the uniform of his brother who delivered the woman's husband dog tags back to her. The husbands brother was consoling his sister in law.
I don't think she was his sister-in-law because she would've broke down and cried. It was her husband's brother. He had already most likely had his good cry before coming home. That's the way I see it in the video.
Yeah, it's the husband telling his wife that his brother died. If you look close at the picture he covers up the other guy both times with the dog tags. She's comforting him.
Vince Gill has the #1 voice in all of country music in my opinion (well aside from Alison Krauss - both are pure angels). If you haven't heard the original version of this song, I'd definitely recommend that as well... Vince Gill ft. Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs - the Official Video. I've heard it hundreds of times and still nothing tops that version for me. Their 3 part harmonies are incredible and bring me to tears every time. As for the meaning of the song, Vince started writing it after the death of fellow country music singer and friend Keith Whitley (the verse "You were no stranger to the rain" is actually a reference to one of Whitley's songs), and then finished it after his older brother passed away. So it has a lot of meaning for him and you can tell when he sings that he is pouring his entire soul into it, sometimes to the point where he is unable to get through it himself without choking up. The most notable was during George Jones' funeral in 2013 when he completely broke down and Patty Loveless had to carry most of the remainder of the song for him. Many fans agree that that is one of his best performances of this song, even though it is immensely heartbreaking to watch.
This is such a beautiful song and heartfelt. Vince Gill wrote an amazing song and so sad because of the loss of his brother. Home Free did it justice. Thanks for a really good reaction. As mentioned below...Traveling Soldier...is really beautiful also. It is a sad song written by Bruce Robison (country singer) in 1996, and the Dixie Chicks in 2002 using Vietnam War as the background. There have been others sing it also. Then Home Free decided to put a bit of a spin and made the soldier a young woman of 18. You really will like how they sing this song. You might want to react the same day to...Honey I'm Good...for big grins. It will help. :)
The Grandpa is telling the story of how he and his brother went to war, but only he came home. The woman he greets is his girl, and he tells her his brother didn't make it back. It's his memories as he tells the story.
So, today Pentatonix announced they are coming out with a 30 day interactive look into how to do acapella, their mixing, the process of picking a song etc...
This song... In the South generally it's a staple....all reaction channels in July last year when my mom passed of cancer oh boy I replied to all reactions of this from the great reactors....it's just 1 of those songs like there are wedding and graduation songs....and this is about Vince's brother.
Vince Gill wrote this song for his brother after he died. I was at his concert when he announced he had just gotten word of his death but he carried on. Love this version but must listen to Vinces original
Yes, the grandfather is telling the grandson his story from his view, so the young man in uniform is the grandfather. Home Free is singing the song as the story is being told. Just as I would start to get into it, you would stop it - and thank you! I don't need to get all misty-eyed.
Man, I have to quit watching reactions to this or else I'll land my ass back in therapy. It took me 2 solid years of work to just "maintain" ... and by that I mean be able to get out of bed and keep a job. I miss singing this with my sister so damn much. In the exceedingly rare occasions I can actually get through it, now I sing for her.
Home Free From the Vault episode 19 has the behind the scenes goings on in the making of this video. Sort of the camera behind the camera. Makes you wonder how they get anything done.
Great reaction! 2 of their new videos from their new album People with Jeffrey East and Born in the USA both has a little acoustic guitar but they don't ever use any instruments outside of that.
Because this one conveys so much emotion through their singing as well as the visuals, it's beautiful but hard to watch at the same time. Just so moving. Great reaction. 💗💗💗
Grandpa is the young soldier. The soldier they lost was his brother, her brother-in-law. And, as Home Free is singing, he is telling his grandson the story. To see/hear this without the visuals, and to get a better idea of who is singing what, check out the Country Rebel Church Sessions version.
I'm afraid you got it wrong. Both brothers were serving at the same time although in different branches of the military. The uniform of the husband was different than the uniform of his brother who delivered the woman's husband dog tags back to her. The husbands brother was consoling his sister in law. So Grandpa delivered his brothers dog tags to his sister in law.
This is so good. Loved the Amazing Grace put in the middle. Great reaction. Home Free is coming to Denver in November so maybe Cheyenne near that time? Yes, loved those low notes of Tim and Chance.
Love this song, and Home Free sang it so beautifully. Thanks for doing a reaction/analysis on it! I’m a huge Home Free fan. I’ve followed them since before they were on The Sing Off. So a lot of years and a lot of live shows. LoL If you want to see a more cheery side of the guys, Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget is hella funny and features Avi! Also the Butts Medley and Honey I’m Good. Rob really hams it up in that one! Also, there is a live sketch they do called Guilty Pleasures… It’s from back when Adam Rupp’s brother Chris was still in the group. It’s hilarious! Thanks again for all the awesome content!
Vince Gill began writing this after his brother died but couldn't finish it. Later, after the death of his friend and fellow country music star Keith Whitley, he finished it. Keith Whitley had a (awesome) song titled I'm No Stranger To The Rain, hence the line "You were no stranger to the rain."
Keith died in 89, Vince's brother in 93. He started it when Keith died and finished when his brother died. Except last year he added another verse because he did not feel complete. "You're safely home in the arms of Jesus / Eternal life, my brother's found / The day will come I know I'll see him / In that sacred place, on that holy ground."
Nice.. have you checked out an all girl acapella group.. Citizen Queen? their bass.. um alto is amazing also.. "Never Enough" .. and their Evolution of Girl Groups, i think. Thanks!
Here is an awesome live version, so no studio add-ons. You can see and hear that Tim is singing harmony and Chance is covering the bass. (Video credit Tara Marie Ahn) ua-cam.com/video/_0wtaBOpVnM/v-deo.html
Vince Gill was not in the Eagles, he was in the band Pure Prairie League in the 1970's
The last guy is Grandpa coming home to his wife telling her his Brother died and she’s comforting him.
I cry everything I hear this song. Doesn't matter how often I hear it, everytime a tear falls.
Adam is so amazing. He never overdoes the percussion. If it's something like this, he takes a really light, er, hand, but he will absolutely pull out all the stops on a rocking one. Love this song, and Home Free sang it so beautifully. Thanks for doing a reaction/analysis on it! I’m a huge Home Free fan. I’ve followed them since before they were on The Sing Off. So a lot of years and a lot of live shows. LoL
If you want to see a more cheery side of the guys, Champagne Taste on a Beer Budget is hella funny and features Avi!
As much as I enjoyed this version Vince Gill's original makes me cry every time.
The old man in the video ( grandpa) was the soldier that came through the door to tell his sister in law that his brother ( her husband) was killed ..
We used this song for my dads funeral in February its such a beautiful song
Vince Gill replaced Glenn Frye, who passed in (I think) 2016.
All 5 ARE singing on this one. The beat boxer sings tenor as well.
Nice.. have you checked out an all girl acapella group.. Citizen Queen? their bass.. um alto is amazing also.. "Never Enough" .. and their Evolution of Girl Groups, i think. Thanks!
Great reaction thanks
i know this video is a year old and i dont know if anyone mentioned it but vince gill wrote this song for his brother when his brother died.
Here is an awesome live version, so no studio add-ons. You can see and hear that Tim is singing harmony and Chance is covering the bass. (Video credit Tara Marie Ahn)

Vince wrote this song for his brother. It's in his honor. Such a touching song. As good as this cover is, you MUST hear original. Vince sings it best
