Yeah, it's pretty unbelievable how well done this anime is, and it's on all fronts. Action, romance, life lessons, music, plot, character development, pacing...
I think Fern saying "It doesn't suit you," is the kindest thing she's ever said to Stark. She's basically saying she prefers Stark as he is, not pretending to be someone else.
@@nullakjg767fern likes stark a lot. She's just very reserved and conservative. She's an orphan raised by a priest and Frieren in the woods. She's very lacking in social education with people her own age and doesn't really know how to deal with her feelings for him. Stark has imposter syndrome and a massive lack of self confidence. So they are both orphans living in the shadows of both the heroes who raised them and severely lacking in understanding of how to react to each other with their different personalities. But it's made very clear they like each other quite a lot.
I don't think that's the point, tbh. Stark doesn't really pretend to be anyone else in this episode, he just dresses differently. His character doesn't change the play the role of the son at all. He just never seemed like the trappings of nobility would fit him well, but once Fern sees him in motion her expression changes. There's a moment when they're dancing that she looks up at him in surprise. That's because in the dance his inner nobility is brought forth and made outwardly visible. It *does* suit him. There's nothing fake about it.
Well the dance is in the Manga also, but only two little frames. With music and animation, the dance comes to life, and Madhouse can make something truly special which also shows Fern's emotions during the dance. She is startled and impressed with Stark's bold move at the beginning, but relaxes into enjoying the dance with him. The dance shows that Fern is in love with Stark.

I just love the Stark and Fern relationship because it doesn't feel rushed or pushed at all, they are just taking their time and dealing with their issues and misunderstandings
A story framed like this that allows for so many time skips really helps sell it too. Stark and Fern have come a long way in a short on-screen time, but being able to slyly add that Stark's been traveling with them for a year means we get to fill in a lot of gaps about their growing relationship as well.
Yeah like we obviously don't get to see all of it in the small snippits of their time that we get but as stated in the episode, it has been a whole year. And they're both late teens/early 20's. It's obvious that at least *something* will blossom lol
I can't get over how well written these characters are either. And it's not just the main cast, it's every supporting character as well. In anime it feels like most characters fit a mold of characteristics meant to represent an image, "He's the warrior. She's the mage. He's the thief. He's strong, she's smart, he's sneaky." but the complexity that these characters have in comparison is so rich. Flaws, quirks, depths, unknown territories, unexpected reactions that at the time feel off but eventually feel perfectly genuine... etc.
One of the many reasons I enjoy this series. The writing is next level. Even what should normally be a "filler" episode, we have important events and character development. Every moment is important.
The dance showed some fine understanding of ancient European etiquette. The suitor drops to one knee and offers his open right palm to the Lady, asking for a dance. If the lady accepts, she places only the tips of her left hand fingers into the palm of his hand. How did Madhouse know any of that? The dance is only two little frames in the Manga, but here it is glorious with music and animation. Fern starts hesitant, but when Stark makes his initial bold dance move, she is surprised, and impressed. And then she begins to enjoy this dance. It is clear here that Fern is in love with Stark. Also Stark is a super warrior at the peak of athletic skills. With just a small amount of training, he easily becomes a masterful dancer.
That attention to detail rocks. I wonder how much of that was the setting designers doing research on etiquette and how much of it was the dancer-choreographers they invited for the scene. I mean, one of the main designers(?) on the show posted photos on twitter of her doing calligraphy with fountain pens and staining paper with coffee to make it look aged, all for the various maps and stuff we've seen in the episodes.
@@Raidanzoup Good catch! I didn't even think of that..Yes, the choreographers could very well be informed about all those little arcane rules. I know that classical ballet still carries a lot of those little signs and etiquettes. Thanks!

Its like implying that the future generation has nothing to worry about if there were people like these 3. Cant really phrase it but its like Frieren is at ease knowing the future is bright even himmel the hero is gone.
The tiny eye movements Fern makes when she's looking at Stark before they start dancing is some of the most subtle details I've ever seen put into a non-movie animation.

Best episode tbh. There's a load to unpack really. The way Stark is able to play the role of a nobleman so convincingly goes to show that he's a lot more than just a warrior. And the way Fern looks at him at around 18:46 in this video seems like she realizes how much it really does suit him. He's a proper hero, and Fern gets to see that more than anyone else, like on his birthday when she followed the trail of people he helped. Notice how at the end she goes over to the window to see what Stark was looking at? She clearly cares about him a lot. Which is great, because the relationships are what really makes this show. Even the brief ones with side characters we leave behind. In this episode Stark did so much more than help keep the morale of the fort up, he helped that father heal. As awesome as his fight with the dragon was, it's stuff like this that makes him a hero.
when stark told him to tell mut about praising him, it really hit me and I haven't seen many people react the same but I teared up really bad when he said that lol. It's the words he's always wanted to hear, seeing another kid that might have to go what he went through worried him and scared him too and seeing that he'll be fine with a proper father figure, I couldn't imagine how much comfort he felt knowing that Mut is in good hands. The devastation of 14 paired with a budding romance in 15 was bittersweet for me. The writer is very good and madhouse and the director elevated the writing with thoughtful and gorgeous animation. Side note - your hype role for Frieren at the plant fight was A+ material loved it.
Beautiful dance scene, Fern and Stark are so cute together! Also, this shows characters can be so relatable, Frieren eating cake is me at every party.😅
15:28 I feel like every reaction I watch of this episode always cuts out the part where Fern looks at her hand after Stark held it in the hall way. She definitely liked it, but she's doing her typical teenager thing of hiding her feelings. Which is why I love how during the soiree, we get a repeat of that scene, except this time she has a smile on her face when she repeats her "It doesn't suit you line" and you can see how during the dance she goes from looking down and being worried, to only looking at Stark. It's so perfect. Also, poor Sein. I think he was making a bit of a move on Frieren at the dance, but she OF COURSE missed the...sign.
I feel like Fern only says "it doesn't suit you" because she likes the way he is normally, at least that's how I take it. Fern is kinda hard to read sometimes 😅😅
This'll probably be a core memory for Stark and Fern. When they get married and settle down, until they grow old together, they probably reminisce this and dance again together.
There is not a single mediocre episode in this show! There might be episodes which suits ones taste better, but each episode provides something to the worldbuilding, character development or history, nuances to the themes. The show is almost perfect!
It's good that you watched this shortly following episode 14. It's like Fern and Stark's growing relationship is a balm for the wound that is Himmel x Frieren.
What makes "Frieren" so potentially legendary is the sheer attention to character-detail that is committed to every single episode of this series! There's not a bad one in the bunch! There are only like... FIVE Anime, previously made to this one, that I can honestly say that much about! We are watching history in the making, boys and girls!
As soon as I saw the thumbnail for this one, my first thought was, "Jess is gonna GEEK on the romance plot point. Also, probably tear up about the family plot point too.
Are they gonna dance? Yes, and it's going to be animated ridiculously well. The slow moments to breathe and slice of life getting as much attention in animation as the fighting is what really makes the show shine.
Flexie you didn't notice that Himmel never married to anyone even in the end when he died he was single. Heonly loved frieren for his whole life and died with it.
My first thoughts after this episode were imagine if the series ends with Stark and Fern’s 1st born child being old enough to adventure and Frieren starts another journey with the next generation. 😢
I feel like you may have just realized who actually pulls out the sword. The Evil God manifests in the world and has to fight the most terrifying Hero/Battlemage creation has ever produced. Credits show the kid at Heaven, excitedly telling the ghosts of Heiter, Frieren and Himmel (the last two holding hands) all about it.
10:40 "she's a badass" You still have no idea how strong Frieren is. she killed the fucking demonking last time she traveld north, she's basically doing a NG+ run.
Yes. Been shipping Fern and Stark since they first met. Even Sein can see it calling them lovebirds after just joining them. The kneeling thing is etiquette for nobles and the way they ask a maiden for a favor or courtship or dance in this case. But it was nice to see Fern be a bit shy and while dance with Stark, she sees him in a new light and relaxes and enjoys herself. Frieren looking at her party and Stark and Fern getting closer by the window, she could probably envision what her relationship with Himmel could have been like if she realized it and opened up a little.
2:20 Fern and Stark are also weirdly unique together in that they're both orphans raised by heroes going on an adventure with another hero acquaintance. It's not like they're the daughter of a farmer and the son of a smithy, what does romance even look like in this situation lmao 7:55 I've always just gone with the explanation that since Stark's not training his mana like a mage would, his body isn't constantly just overflowing with any more mana than any normal human or animal. He doesn't have that aura around him. On the other hand, I always like to assume that in worlds that have magic, warriors always get bonkers strong because the magic faces inwards or is in the air they breathe and the food they eat lol 19:12 Frieren is SO GIDDY about eating that cake, I'm happy for her
At 16:54 when he tells him "This isn't your village" it's because he knows what happened there. He knows where Stark is from and heard about his village being destroyed years ago, and can see how nervous he is holding a sword like he was taught as a child, instead of the axe he wields now.
"Are they catching feelings?" Catching? Fern lost long time ago. Remember how Stark offered to replace the love bracelet and she said angrily "Never say that again"? Or in this episode how she looks at her hand after Stark held it? Or the dreamy eyes she is gazing at Stark with during the dance? Stark is a different story, to quote Sein "he is slow on the uptake". But he will get there
5:35 i think it's a bit of misunderstanding. it's not older women he desires. he himself is fairly old, more than 30 for sure. it's more of a vibe really, like this woman at the end of first arc (who seems to be same age as him), someone who is more motherly, well endowed, with adult vibe you know. frieren doesn't fit that XD
The whole dance scene was just a cover image in the Manga, the anime staff went all out with the ball and it really heightened the budding romance between fern and stark
What I love about this episode for the first half, is that it feels very D&D-esque in terms of encounters. Like, "Oh, a Priest joined your party? Guess what! Now there's a monster that would be nearly IMPOSSIBLE to fight without one!" It's a fun way to get in more action, develop Sein more as a character and as a party member, but also to poke at the way storytelling just happens to work out in RPGs.
I think most men probably knew from episode one - especially towards the end, when they're watching the Era Meteor Shower for the second (and last) time - that Himmel, at least, not only loved, but was *in love* with Frieren.
When I watched this episode the subtitles were a bit different but it was only noticeable in one line: in the sleeping village the line from Fern that had Stark freaking out was "my soul feels itchy" Also whether or not a height difference matters in dancing really depends on what type of dance it is. When I was learning lindy hop it was no issue whereas too much of a weight difference would make some moves impossible.
Well... About that chaos flower. As Frieren said that mages are not good on dealing with curses. And as things play out, priests are the real counter on that. So priests like Sein have high curse resistance. Meanwhile mages can resist it a little (I guess from their mana pool) So that explained why Stark fall so fast (not priest & no mana pool)
If you had elf ears you could easily pass for Frierens sister. You have the same heart and beauty about you. It makes your reactions on this anime so wonderful. Thank you for doing this.
I'm guessing the curse affected Stark first because he has no manna and no magical protection or resistance. It affected Fern next because she's weaker than Frieren. And they already told us why priests are almost immune to curses.
In this episode, Stark and the viewer show the similarity between the fathers just to show - his own father also thought about his younger son simply could not show this.
Stark and Fern are so close in age and they are spending so much close time together. By journey's end, they will be more brother and sister rather than lovers.
This anime is balsam for the soul When you like something like stark and fern, give "dangers in my heart" what Frieren is for fantasy is dangers in my heart for romantic You can see in seins eyes the reflection from frierens spell and the whole dance scene is hand drawn and not like in the Manga only 2-3 panels, sein getting cake zoned xD the books frieren can't decide was changing a apple in red or green
I think the Chaos Flower's curse has the wear down the victim's mana pool. That's why they fell asleep in that order. Stark doesn't use mana, except possibly to reinforce his body, and then Fern fell next since she has a larger mana pool but can't compare to Frieren. Pretty sure Sein was just plain immune from being a priest and receiving blessings and protection of the Goddess.
I don't think there are a lot of people who've read/watched Frieren and don't ship Fern and Stark, they're just too cute for that. But I love how much time the show is taking with their relationship (as it does with everything)
Fern x Stark are one of my top 5 reason why I can't wait to see the rest of the anime. Have purchased all the manga volumes, but I like the anime too much to read past where the season ended
A lot of people was quick to paint Stark's dad as a bad person. I think he and lord Orden has a lot of things in common. They have a status to maintain. And they are from a village of warriors which perhaps has a tradition of slaying monsters once you reach a certain age. Stark was just to kind and gentle for the setting. This also highlights what a chad Stoltz was. He was the strongest and perhaps the kindest big bro despite the living conditions lol
Frieren is bizarre, people will have a hard time recommending you shows after it, because it is so crazy well done, not just in "anime/manga" context, but Fantasy overall, Frieren might be one of the best Fantasy stories in recent memory. We are getting a good harvest, Frieren, Dungeon Meshi, Atelier of Witch Hat, there is much to be said about how a very specific Japanese population is tackling this genre out of nowhere, took everybody by storm
This is purely speculative, but I think that the sleep order for the curse is defined by mana quantity and mana type. Stark is a Warrior without magic, so he's first. Fern is a mage, but young and has less mana than Frieren. Sein is unaffected/last because, despite being human, his mana type is "Divine" from the "Goddess," instead of normal mana.

Fern and Stark SHIPPED
There is not a single mediocre episode in this show! There might be episodes which suits ones taste better, but each episode provides something to the worldbuilding, character development or history, nuances to the themes. The show is almost perfect!
fun fact : stark and fern dance moment only have 1 PANEL in the manga. 🔥
Wasn’t just 4 panels? I can remember I have to read it again
@@wilpalkia well its two actually. one panel for that moment, the other just a background when sein asked frieren to dance xD
It's good that you watched this shortly following episode 14. It's like Fern and Stark's growing relationship is a balm for the wound that is Himmel x Frieren.
The dance scene is one of the most beautiful of the whole show, the animation and the music are simply perfect.
And yes, Fern and Stark all the way ❤😊
What makes "Frieren" so potentially legendary is the sheer attention to character-detail that is committed to every single episode of this series! There's not a bad one in the bunch! There are only like... FIVE Anime, previously made to this one, that I can honestly say that much about! We are watching history in the making, boys and girls!
The Fark ship is underway.
As soon as I saw the thumbnail for this one, my first thought was, "Jess is gonna GEEK on the romance plot point. Also, probably tear up about the family plot point too.
You were spot on! 😂💗
@FlexiejayAnime You get cuteness overload pretty easily, it's like predicting rain when it's cloudy. Lol.
fern and stark - dancing
frieren and sein - eating cake
I can just imagine later on in their married life Fern demanding Stark to dance with her… she really seemed to enjoy their moment together. ^^
I hope they pump out a whole squad for frieren to train up. We're gonna need a mage, a warrior and a priest of course 😂
That would be a perfect epilogue for the series for me.
I feel like you may have just realized who actually pulls out the sword.
The Evil God manifests in the world and has to fight the most terrifying Hero/Battlemage creation has ever produced. Credits show the kid at Heaven, excitedly telling the ghosts of Heiter, Frieren and Himmel (the last two holding hands) all about it.
now that we have had the ships, 14 and 15, a whole new cast of amazing characters will show up.
Ubel best girl and i am convinced i can fix her.
look at fern's expression at 19:02 i'm not a romantic guy but her face really screams "I F*** LOVE HIM"
23:46 "Do we ship Fern and Stark?" I dunno... do you ship milk and cookies? Peanut butter and jelly? Mac & cheese?!
😂😂😂🙌🏻
The whole ballroom thing was cool, cute, and wholesome. Some nice art and small details in the show.
10:40 "she's a badass"
You still have no idea how strong Frieren is. she killed the fucking demonking last time she traveld north, she's basically doing a NG+ run.
Imagine at some point in the future: Stark proposing to Fern... and Frieren witnessing it and at that point understanding what it meant back then.
The 'Zoltraak' music is indeed great 👍
2:20 Fern and Stark are also weirdly unique together in that they're both orphans raised by heroes going on an adventure with another hero acquaintance. It's not like they're the daughter of a farmer and the son of a smithy, what does romance even look like in this situation lmao
7:55 I've always just gone with the explanation that since Stark's not training his mana like a mage would, his body isn't constantly just overflowing with any more mana than any normal human or animal. He doesn't have that aura around him. On the other hand, I always like to assume that in worlds that have magic, warriors always get bonkers strong because the magic faces inwards or is in the air they breathe and the food they eat lol
19:12 Frieren is SO GIDDY about eating that cake, I'm happy for her
Really love your reaction, btw congratulations for 79K subscribe road to 80K 🎉
That gaze of Fern... we lost her ☺
If we ship Stark and Fern!? Ha... If by the end of the series, they are not together, I'm throwing hands.
At 16:54 when he tells him "This isn't your village" it's because he knows what happened there. He knows where Stark is from and heard about his village being destroyed years ago, and can see how nervous he is holding a sword like he was taught as a child, instead of the axe he wields now.
12:13 flexie love stark so much she echoed along inside the anime lmao
"Are they catching feelings?"
Catching?
She warmed up to dignified Stark at the end, but I think Fern prefers Stark with the face of a scoundrel.
0:21 It's definitely all of us watching every episode of Frieren Haha
Fern having mommy vibes while watching Stark. Frieren having the same vibes while watching the love birds.
Im not sure if it was mentioned before, but Himmel means 'Heaven' in German, so I've been viewing the show as her journey towards him.
I think most men probably knew from episode one - especially towards the end, when they're watching the Era Meteor Shower for the second (and last) time - that Himmel, at least, not only loved, but was *in love* with Frieren.
When I watched this episode the subtitles were a bit different but it was only noticeable in one line: in the sleeping village the line from Fern that had Stark freaking out was "my soul feels itchy"
Also whether or not a height difference matters in dancing really depends on what type of dance it is.
Lots of great stuff in this episode but Fern double fisting doughnuts is iconic.
Did you know Anya and Frieren have the same va
17:30 - Best possible moment to pause the episode.
Watching 14-15 back to back is quite the emotional ride.
that was quick. i understand why everyone cant get enough of the show
"Shall we dance too?"
"I'm going to eat cake"
Savage.
Madhouse went all out with the dance scene because in the manga it's only a panel and the animation is all hand-drawn.
Thank you for sharing 😊
Don't worry. Episode 16 is going to hit you in the feels too.
This anime is balsam for the soul
When you like something like stark and fern, give "dangers in my heart" what Frieren is for fantasy is dangers in my heart for romantic
You can see in seins eyes the reflection from frierens spell and the whole dance scene is hand drawn and not like in the Manga only 2-3 panels, sein getting cake zoned xD the books frieren can't decide was changing a apple in red or green
It is so hard to find good dancing in anime. This was superb.
An anime I rewatched these past weeks was Fruits Basket 2019. I feel like you would like that one.
Same to Dungeon Meshi.
Since you liked previous episode so much you really should watch Violet Evergarden
He was the strongest and perhaps the kindest big bro despite the living conditions lol
frieren pimping out my boy stark
My Fair Stark
The dance sequence is barely in the manga, but the studio went full hog in this episode. Some of the smoothest animation I have ever seen.
Animator : "So what's our budget for the dance scene ?"
Director : "YES"
Frieren is bizarre, people will have a hard time recommending you shows after it, because it is so crazy well done, not just in "anime/manga" context, but Fantasy overall, Frieren might be one of the best Fantasy stories in recent memory. We are getting a good harvest, Frieren, Dungeon Meshi, Atelier of Witch Hat, there is much to be said about how a very specific Japanese population is tackling this genre out of nowhere, took everybody by storm
As the only non magical character, Stark may have little to no magical defenses, so he was affected first.
This episode is splendid 👌.
you kinda have the eyes of frieren :) so pretty !
Y'all, we probably gonna see Flexie big chilling with Himmel in Aureole by season's end if this show don't chill with all the feels. 😂
I think Stark and Fern already have feelings for each other at this point. They just don’t know it yet.
Do consider to watch ep 18 19 20 21 in one go too...bcoz they are so so so so gooodddd n related to each other...tqvm
