I bet the anticipation of buying a new Van Halen record back in the day was awesome, not knowing what Eddie had put down. I can imagine the feeling of dropping the needle and hearing these riffs for the very first time. Must have been magic.
+jarjon76 It was
It was, trust me!
Don't forget on Top Jimmy, he used that guitar that each string went to a different speaker or something.
I'd say he continued the innovation at least through 5150...use of the Steinberger Trans Trem on Summer Nights and Get Up
Don't disagree with that. 1984 showed us that they were trending towards some poppier stuff. Roth's solo record confirms that...so if he stayed with VH, other than having some different lyrics, 5150 would have been about the same, IMO.
I didn't understand period... yes, EVH's music is powerful.
I was blown away.
What I thought set him apart from the pack, in addition to the obvious, was his sense of timing. He doesn’t rush the riff. Always behind the beat.Never sounds nervous if that makes any sense.
This is specially true during solos. Ed does all his wizardry in an aparent non existing timing but always manages to get to the end in time. Amazing
Makes complete sense to me.
Rst28 -- You nailed it, brother.
I always feel like Alex plays the beat to Eddie's riff ...instead of the drummer in control the guitarist is
#musicianship , yo.
This riff is just so in the pocket. Nothing rushed. Just pure rock.
Thats what I always do. I’m aviolinist, but its. So easy to rush and EVH never does!
Yes
Pure rhythm and feel.
Classic riff
love ripping this one at Guitar Center
Those volume swells before the solo are the ideas of a fucking wizard. 😂
back when this record came out in 79, those harmonic pull offs @ 2:09 had us all going, "What the fuck was that?"
exactly
CribNotes My friend called it "clanking guitar." Lol.
All those sounds he came up with...amazing stuff, back in the day!
rklewis2
there have been many many guitar players who could play circles around Eddie, but I cannot think of one who had the whole package of technique, sound, ingenuity, and rock guitar riff song writing skills.
+CribNotes - I remember playing when he came out, and most of the things he done were a , WTF was that moment for me... lol
CribNotes The same here. It was a "Holy crap, what was that moment!" How can I ever get that sound with what I have?
i love the tone on the first two albums. so raw.
+Ronnie Sherman and man so LOUD!!!
I was always partial two II
By far the greatest tone ever!!! Agree 100%
Gold standard for decades. Too bad he and Ted Templeman could not be in the same room. Lots going on to get it but, just incredible. Clarity he never really got again and chased it for years while we tried to figure this out. Lol
It was like an unleashed pit bull!
1:41 that guitar lick and harmonics 😩🔥
Best freakin' tone in the history of electric guitar... Hands down!!!
Too bad he walked away from the Marshall Plexi, and how dumb of Marshall not to sign him as an endorsement and just make one hell of a kick-ass hand-wired Eddie Van Halen amp they still should do that, I personally have three vintage Marshalls a 68 a 71 and a 72. Most certainly because of Eddie, but of course Michael schenker Mick Ralphs
Really good but lots like that.
2:08 In 1978 every rock player in the world went, "WHAT.... the FUCK was THAT?!!?"
Until I saw the 'Live Without a Net' concert video, that sound drove me insane as a teenager. For a long time, I thought he was speed-picking natural harmonics or something.
yeah too true--god when i first heard this when i was 15
Not trying to be a dick cuz I agree with your statement but this came out in 1979
Eddie Wilson yeah 79
Ok, ok...79. Cut me some slack... I was 8 years old, got both albums at the same time. Told my dad I was done w/ drum lessons. Begged him to trade my one snare drum in for a black beauty les paul, and he did. Because I just had to be able to make those sounds. And, have been cursed ever since. ^ - Damn you, Eddie! (And no, I no longer have that black beauty, but a house full of assorted strats. But I wish I did, like a lot of other gear)
That picture of him is amazing...long dark hair flowing behind him, veins pumping in both arms as he shows complete mastery of the guitar...How can anyone not love late 70's and 80's rock N roll?
I know everyone here said "woo woo" out loud at 1:24
I did. Lol
Absolutely...🤘🏼
And that riff!!!!
Yep
You bet! Right at the pause ..."Woo Woo" and at the end a big "Somebody give me a shot!" (Jack Daniels or Patron, lol).
The palm harmonics at 2:08... Eddie, you were a genius.
Unreal
These isolated guitar tracks show you just how 'loose' Ed was with his style. No rules. No regs. Just whatever he wanted to do, and as long as it sounded good. Remember, it was his "vices' that kept him fresh, creative, innovative and UNINHIBITED..... especially with his stage-fright. If you listen to ALL of the isolated tracks available on YT you will hear LOTS of things you never heard before, tons of "mistakes" (if you can call it that) and you will hear timing issues. Alex was NOT playing to a 'click-track' ... these guys had a vibe all of their own. Eddie was always on the verge of a new creation, nothing ever played the same twice and always trying something new. He didn't save his spontaneity and innovation for Home Alone. He did it right there in the studio, many times on the first take. He did NOT let the producer overdub him until his later years. This is why we can get such clean isolated tracks, but... like I said, you can see how he wasn't as particular as he was just 'magical' .... don't worry about the little things. He didn't care, the producer didn't care and WE sure didn't care either. Nobody knew that 40 years later we would be scrutinizing every single note and 'sound' that came out of his guitars. Had he known I doubt he would have given two fucks. He'd still do what HE wanted to do, not what everyone else was doing or what anyone else 'thought' he should do instead. Now..... emulate him the best you can, and even with the mistakes you still won't know where he was coming from because he was a frickin' ALIEN when it came to the guitar. He wasn't from this world and he should NEVER be compared to Jimi Hendrix. Maybe as far as forcing guitarists to take another look from a different perception of what they were doing on the guitar, but not as far as prowess, grit, knowledge and the spirit it takes to jump off of a cliff and hope you live to tell about it. If that was the case, every single song he wrote in the first 4 albums were Cliff-Hangers. There will never be another Eddie Van Halen and the guitarists who lived in his era will never be the same. Why? Because they all remember where they were and what they were doing the first time they heard "Eruption' and we ALL knew that we were substandard. EVERYONE has copied Eddie in some way, shape or form at this point in time. It can't be helped. The influence of his 'sound' is overwhelmingly attractive and definitely noticeable, just like a super hot naked chick. R.I.P my brother. If there were a list of your top-fans, I would definitely be on the top and one of the long-timers. I've dissected everything Ed has played at one time or another and I'm still doing it at 58 years old. I don't plan on stopping either, not as long as my fingers still move and my heart still beats. Often imitated ... NEVER duplicated... not even by Mr. Vai ~
Such a mean ass riff.
Very impressive and passionate words about Eddie. Thank you
wow man that was worth reading !...as a 57 year old guitar player since the age of 13 I feel everything you said big time. ill never forget the day I heard VH1 and eruption ....the early stuff never stopped inspiring me as a player, even today.
You can hear that "chunk a chunk" in his playing, he's got serious depth to his tone. That only comes from thousands of hours put into a single craft. And mastering the piano before ever picking up a guitar. Classical training. Total mastery.
Well… That has essentially nothing to do with his “chunk” his rig was insanely particular and unique. his note choice and melodies are absolutely due in part to his training, but not the tone
The greatest rock tone of all time! Rip King Edward
Really good but too many others as well
Ferocious.. that’s the only way to describe that tone.
The entire VH II album!
R.I.P Guitar God, you influenced the World and Millions of guitarists. A Truly Sad Day. . . Thank You for the 4 decades of music you gave us Eddie~
No other guitarist has had such a positive impact on my life. We were so blessed to have EVH and he is so missed.
Yeah, those were the golden years of our life. We were young so the bands were young. We were all growing up together and listening to what they put out the 70s and 80s were beautiful once in a lifetime cannot go backwards. I would love to one more time, I’m 56 now Has been a hell of a journey one more time 🤘🎸🎸🎸🤘
His old MARSHALL is a Fuckin BEAST!!!!
+charvelstrat81 why is that?
+Chris De Warenne
You really have to ask? You're hearing why.
Chris De Warenne Listen to it!
it is NOT modded like he originally bullshitted about, he just said that to make other players think a stock plexi could not sound like that.
Most dont but there are a few sweet ones that do! :) His 68 SLP is a good example.
To be fair, the Variac was the missing link for others. No one thought to completely dime and amp - every knob to ten - and then drop the voltage to 50 %. IMO, it had more to do with that. He could have swapped out the Marshall he had for another and achieved the sound.
Often imitated, never replicated. RIP EVH
All of the most memorable guitar players have a sound that sets them apart. For me, the squish sound in between notes of Eddie’s sound is the juice. Unreal. His approach to rhythm/solo is ART.
Feels so weird typing RIP EVH....
_Especially_ if you are an age-contemporary of the man.
@@TralfazConstruction also whoever else who picked up on EVH late in life....
It really does suck man. VH really was the soundtrack of my youth. I was 13 when VH I came out and I turned 19 when 1984 came out. That was essential Van Halen to me and always will be!
Can’t imagine what his tone would sound like in the same room as him
The ultimate HIGH BAR of all TONE! That low E is just pure destuctive domination! LOVE IT
Being 65yrs old now these type of utube entries remind me of when I was a kid. Yes I am old enough to have experienced the transition from mono to stereo! I used to listen for hours with my headphones on switching the balance knob from right to left isolating the stereo sounds playing in each ear.As far as I can remember( could be wrong here)the Beatles were the first to use the stereo sound. At least for me I used to listen to them a lot.Peace& keep rockin' rip Eddie
I been really digging these isolated tracks lately. Just the raw tone and all the little nuances you don't hear in the finished product. I fuckin love it
One of his top 5 solos!!
I agree. He also played these harmonics live and without fail
Absolutely awesome. It's amazing how much I miss the harmonies when I listen to this isolated track. Say what you will about DLR, but the vocals of he and Michael really complete VH.
they need to release EVH isolated guitar tracks officially.
if it's released as an album of isolated ed guitar, i will buy it twice
That harmonic pull-off thing he does at 2:09 is so rad ass. He would just do whatever works. What a fucking genius.
R.I.P Eddie,You were the best guitarist Thanks for all the great music!
Always loved the solo. It sounds like Eddie's laughing...
Love these isolated tracks.
Even without all the pyrotechnics, Eddie's riffing and sense of harmony still sets him apart.
I love that inadvertent "schlonk" at 1:33 right after that wicked lick and right before the bend at the 10th fret, B string. NOBODY plays like this anymore. Just total feel. Everyone nowadays solos like John Petrucci-- just flawless smooth note-perfect solos. It's impressive as hell, but it would be nice if someone would come along and do this kind of stuff. Eddie just had that SNARL, that CRUNCHY CHUNKY razor blade tone. And even his mistakes sounded awesome.
777zippy777 Edward said that he left the mistakes in many of their recordings. Personally, I like the mistakes. It shows that the music was...more human, you know?
It's why I like (real) live music better. It's like, here it is. That's how we sounded that day.
+Vincent Venturella My fav head is my
YJM100 with .1-100w variable. You can crank both jumpered channels but keep the voltage at a level so you do not blow out the windows. Gets that early EVH sizzle at livable volumes. Only takes about 15-20 to get you 99% there. Also have a great 5150 50w but nothing comes close to a Marshall. IMO "Your're no good "cranked was the best tone ED ever got from a Marshall and I miss it. Sag and sizzle to die for.
+rklewis2 I've heard the same...and if you ever put a set of good headphones on and listen really close, you can hear a mistake in almost every VH song...but that's what I love about VH, if you listen to the album, or hear them in concert, you are getting the same experience. I read that Ed never uses anymore than 3 takes to record a song, and usually, it was the first take because it had the most energy.
With today's software they can look at the notes and sculpt them. Extend sustain, fatten, tone and eliminate artifacts "soul" such as these. To me these type recordings are void of personality, dead and sterile. I am from Ed's era and must have 3 dozen pedals, racks, heads etc. I have tried today's modelling software and all in one effects and damned if I see what the fuss is about. Played back from a recording yeah, they do sound good but live and especially if you are using the rig I can tell a big difference. Ed's Marshall days,Your're no good, Fair Warning etc was and is still my gold standard for tone.
JIMJAMSC Nothing beats tubes and analog for pure, organic sound.
There are many bands that do play until they get a perfect take. Listen to Led Zeppelin's "Houses of the Holy."
While it certainly has its' place, as far as composition goes, a good old, "let 'er rip" part has its' place, as well.
It's just a step away from live.
That part at 1:40 is my favorite part of the solo. So smooth and fluid and CLEAN!
Man, the riffs Eddie came up with. One of my favorites!
Just plain filthy! Listen to King Ed shred! Melting faces since 1978. Long Live the Mighty Van Halen! 🎸
I have been changed... I am a drummer but listen to guitar more when Eddie plays.............
The magic about Eddies tone is that one could say it could have pushed midrange, some could say it has scooped. Both sound correct to me for some odd reason.
All it was is a 100w super lead cranked with only 98 volts going into it. Just on the edge of a meltdown
@@milesfifer171 and apparently every knob on his Marshall was dimed, according to Eddie. Said it was the only way to get the sound he liked. Plus the Variac, of course
The harmonic run at 1:45. That's the oddball $hit that makes Eddie great...
I can HEAR the beer in Eddie's playing and it's fuckin awesome.
Mike Wilson yup 😂👍🏼
oh, and the uhhh... the cocaine too
Not a missed note. Eddy was just an absolute master of his craft. Eddy we miss and love you dearly !!!RIP
This is actually completely stunning playing and tone. like even for Ed holy shit. 2:40 is one of the best chords ive ever heard played.
Love that thick rich chord at the end. That's big sound right there. Classic VH!!
That guitar sound is so amazing
Some parts of this track has been slightly cut. (I don't know if its been done on purpose) But It's not in time. Like at 43. And also I believe during the solo. I'm still listening to that.
Maybe just little hiccups in his timing, no?? It’s not like he had absolutely perfect timing, which is fine.
@@frankie.d1127 no its not his timing it's something to do with when these tracks were isolated from rockband I think
I believe these are double/triple tracked stems and it sounds like he missed his picking pattern on 1 or 2 of the overdubs, so it just barfs in those couple spots.
I am now reminded as to why my teenage years were so exciting and happy!! EVH FOREVER!!
VAN HALEN THE BEST 🎸🎸💎💎💎💎💎💎💎⤴️⤴️⤴️⤴️⤴️⤴️⤴️👾👾👾
Wow....just wow. Gives you a whole new appreciation for these songs that I already f-ing loved!
What a powerful raw tone ! Eddie nailed his sound perfectly. Another great guitar tone imo is Blackmore's on Deep Purple In Rock, Fender Strat and Marshall unleashed
I REMEMBER WAITING FOR THE NEXT ALBUM AND THEN THIS CAME OUT I BOUGHT IT GOT HOME PUT IT ON AND FUCK IT WAS KILLER . WHAT A LOSS R.I.P. EDDIE AND THANK YOU FOR SHARING WITH US YOURSELF AND FREINKENSTEIN..THANKS BROTHER
Pure magic. I remember when this album came out. This riff, the bends to the volume swell--who the f**k would have ever thought of that? EVH is the GOAT.
best guitar ever. Rip
This tone is KILLER!!!!
Get me a freakin doctor dude!
Thanks for this!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Since we aren't likely to get any new music from them, listening to classic songs iso is a real treat.
Damn, I'm the one who needs a doctor!
From Eddie constantly kicking my ass, with his guitar riffs! So fucking amazing, even after listening to them for around 32 years, or so. NEVER gets old, or out dated.
Expressive performance 1 Quantization 0. People should understand what makes feel instead of being obsessed with processing 'dull perfection'. Awesome stuff. So many lessons to be learned by listening to these isolated tracks (other than 'how the - - - - did he do that?!' - which, let's face it, we all want to understand). RIP Eddie x
I am 49, live near Phoenix, and saw the first ten tours. Of the 187 shows I have seen in my life, 1978 and 1979 are the first and third best shows I have ever seen. They were beyond exciting back then.
Man does that sound mean a raw as fk on its own. Evh on the mt Rushmore of guitarists
Who screamed WOO WOO.........????!!!!!
Riff, rhythm, feel and most important (IMO) tone! He started a generation of future guitar gods, and it all came to light for the whole world to hear in 1978 when nobody was playing like this. The GOAT!
I read today that they're in the studio with DLR, I hope to all that is sacred that EVH lays down some pure genius like this.
AT 1: 56 GIVES ME CHILLS 🎸😀
Man, that sound is AWESOME!
Mozart on the guitar. 1955-2020. Thnx for the memories Ed
Just today This one got to my mind and I remembered how awesome the two first albums were. They never were so good after them.
Pa wow every time I’m at work in the evening I play this and get chills over my body that could be Eddie on my shoulders. Wow🎸🎸🙏😇
..I'm 55 years old now...and still so very fkn thankful for this shit ..
Thumbnail; for a sec there I thought that was Dave on guitar.
I thought the same lol
Sooooooooooo KEWL to hear how they recorded this track !!! If you listen closely you can hear the reverb paned hard to the right side. left side is dry ( just his amp on 10) . Makes one big sounding stereo axe !
They played this before the second album was out, when they opened for Sabbath, Song was burned in my mind from the show, was dying for the second album.
I was into KISS back in the 70's until a guy that used to hang on the corner with us brought this album over to me and said "Listen to this guitar player" "Tell me what you think" He said it with a devilish smirk on his face. By the time Eruption came on I said " Christ! Who is this guy". How is he playing that!" I spent the next year or so trying to find out how his guitar was set up. I eventually figured out it was tuned E flat. I remember reading an interview where he said he potted his pickup in wax...can't remember the brand of pickup though. I'm sure someone here will know.
genXer3 it's a big myth... Some say it was a mighty mite (Seymour Duncan copy of a DiMarzio super distortion) some say it was a 1958 stock pup from a Gibson ES335 rewound maybe by Seymour duncan, maybe by Eddie, parrafin wax potted. Some say in Ed's destroyer there was a Super Distortion, some say there was Ibanez Super 70s pups. Definitely some sort of PAF on steroids kinda thing for both the Shark and Frankenstrat. Duncan Custom Custom will probably do the trick.
@@beaumowery5610 Yeah I don't think anyone will ever know for sure what pickups he was using back then. I've also heard it was a super distortion with an alnico magnet out of a PAF pickup. As much tinkering as Ed did with his gear, anything is possible, whatever sounds good to your ear is good enough. I can vouch for the custom custom, it does a good EVH tone.
@@beaumowery5610 i believe Eddie said it was a stock humbucker out of a Gibson ES335. Did Seymour Duncan work on it ? Who knows, who cares lol. The main thing is, Eddie's tone just ruled !
Duncan makes claim that his '78 model was a reproduction of a pickup he wound for a "certain someone."
Lynch, DiMartini, Crosby and Vito were also on Duncan's
How could anyone give this a thumbs down? I mean c’mon..
Exactly.....please explain your reasoning!
@@kkay1341 Not long enough...
@@ata5855 I was a short one, clocking in at only 2:50. Maybe they were shooting for top 40 airplay? lol
An absolutely bonafide virtuoso and innovative musical genius.
Not rushing, not dragging, yet still not metronomical. There's a lot of talk about his tone, which is great, but in this case, it's that PERFECT time that is unbelievably powerful.
His rhythm skills are just as impressive as his soloing. One of a kind.
Eddies metronomic rhythm playing was often overlooked -an awesome player
One of my ultimate goto VH songs 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘👏👏👏
I love everything about this!!!!!!!!!!! you can really see the feel and atitude!!!!
one of my fav solos by ed aswell!!!!!!!!!!! :)
I could hear that riff for 10 hours :)
Sounds great! Love it!
Listening to this reminds me how great of an entertainer DLR was on this album.
Too cool. Woud've killed to hear this 40 years ago!
The most recognizable tone....in Rock N Roll history.....long live the King....Edward Van Halen!! EVH is God
MASTER. RESPECT. FUN AS HELL.
2:50
So simple yet so amazing
@SgtTravisBickle i will do my best to explain by typing on a keyboard but its very cool and fun to play. what he's doing is pulling off from 4-2-0-4-2-0-4-2-0 (frets) on the G string really fast. all pull offs except for the hammer on from 0-4, and while hes doing that, he is sliding his picking hand down the G string. so you're pulling off on the G string 4-2-0-4-2-0-4-2-0 while sliding your picking hand down the neck of the guitar. it will take practice to make it sound good.
My dad took me to see them in 79' and they opened with this, closed with ATOMIC PUNK. I was a little kid in pure heaven.
NEVER ceases to amaze me.
Could listen to this part of the solo a million times 1:31
rifflife
it´s almost bebop sounding!
+DarkMetalJazzPunk exactly, it sounds exactly like Charlie Parker through a Plexi of course. jk.
+rifflife I like 1:15 better
+Jeb Barrett
Yeah I have always loved the volume swells there
Same
The last Guitar God! !
Eddie will be missed for along time ,truly my favorite guitarist ,so inspiring to everyone in the music world 🤩🤩🤩🤩🌍🌎🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸☮️😇🙏😇💥🔥💥👍✌️😎
@GuardianKTB you can use that technique on any string, im not sure if it's the G or the D string, but after reading your comment i tried it on the G string and it sounded good.
fearless...adventurous....innovative.....on another plane!
Something has gone very wrong in the audio data transfer, it jumps in time!
Not representative of Eddie's AWESOME perception of time!
+pleximanic Stop complaining and just enjoy moron.
pleximanic Really mature! How old are you 13? Lol
1970borntorun fuck off
1970borntorun fuck you prick
Brilliance for the ears!
Thank you for this video. Subed for sure.
I see we're still kicking ass, please continue.
I love this song!
