Opening scene depicts the French Legionnaires surrendering at Dien Binh Phu who are eventually returned to France and assigned to Algeria only to be involved in another war for independence. A good watch for movie-history hobbyists-fans. Stars Anthony Quinn and the very beautiful Claudia Cardinale 💖 RIP. Currently streaming on Prime Video.
"Redvers Reverse" Battle of Colenso 1899, 2nd Anglo Boer War 1899-1902. Also from Legion Wargames, and even more obscure, is "Hill of Doves" about the battle of Majuba-Laings Nek 1881 and the 1st Anglo Boer War 1880-81 (just Dec to Mar total).
LOVE this topic, and you touch on a bunch of games that I'm interested in - the game in the thumbnail specifically caught my eye (and I think you mentioned it before on the channel). As someone that was drawn to wargames thru these other type of "unique" games and topics - tribes steering the heads of ruling powers (Pax Pamir), social uprisings against puppet dictators (Cuba Libre) - this is near and dear to my heart. I think the thing that puts these games and topics on the fringe of the typical wargame is that they are less about firepower and "might is right", it's not about the strength of your forces and placement of troops, but the other factors and some times non-combatant involvement. I'm especially curious about the High Flying Dice games and recently itemized that whole Indigenous Warfare series for a potential bulk order. Grant is right, that would make an excellent mega-pack!
Guys, The Last Blitzkrieg is the BEST BCS game to play multiplayer. There are so many formations that it's just made for multiple players taking 4-6 formations apiece. With random formation activation (You draw 3 activation chits and whichever side draws 2 formation activation counters first gets to activate one of those formations. Makes it very fun! Last game I played was an 8 player game online. It took a while to finish but was a blast for everyone.
Machiavelli was originally published by BattleLine. When Avalon Hill bought out BattleLine they reprinted Machiavelli with the original cover, which was much less creepy. Then AH put out a 2nd edition in 1995, and that is when they introduced the creepy cover, which is Bartolomeo Colleoni, the general of the Venetian army during the 15th century. (Machiavelli himself was a rather handsome dude).
Absolutely love the Monthly Debrief videos. Always good irrespective of the topic although that can also be awesome. "Gest" is pronounced "jest." It means a deed [an action, not an ownership document] and it's related to the word, "gesture." By extension, it also means an adventure or exploit, or a story about adventures/exploits, for exmple, a Gest of the Knights of the Round Table.
I try not to say "modern classic", but The Crew is a modern classic. Glad you got to try it! And thanks for the suggestions. Very curious about some of the HFG titles now.

My collection is such now that I generally only add one to my collection if it covers a new topic (though I focus on ancient and medieval games). FYI, check out MMP TCS game on The Battle of Leros.

I often take a couple or three games in my large hardshell suitcase, floating in socks, T-shirts, and like. So far, they have survived the trips, and if TSA did open the suitcase, they didn’t mess with the arrangement.

It's a fantastic game, but we didn't mention it in this one because there's a lot of games covering GWOT in some form or another, maybe not at that scale but that's why it was omitted.
1. I have never had a problem with damaged boxes when bringing home loot from WBC back to the Philippines in my checked baggage so I'm a bit curious what happened with you. 2. Allen Dickerson is designing an intro level game in the GBACW series. It's not Simple GBoH because that's a rule system. The game Allen is designing is simpler battles with fewer counters, etc. 3 In Manila: The Savage Streets, I can see the area where my mother lives and since I only live about two minutes from her then by extension, I can sort of see where I live. Not exactly, of course, because I can't tell what streets are what except for the major ones. But I can see certain landmarks of the city on the map.
An other excellent debrief, with so many games that are on my wish list. Two small games I play are Resist & Saladin(Shakos)I must get around to buying border states. Love Legion Games, I have the three cavalry affairs, which I really enjoy, also need to get Target for tonight & Invasion Malta. Possibly on the horizon Werwolf & Russo-Japanese War. I dislike the idea of using "COIN adjacent" as "an introduction to COIN". It can get you in the door I guess, but in the end, it's not COIN. If it was, there would be no need for a new series.
Spent many happy hours at university in the mid 1980s playing Machiavelli. I always seemed to play the Papal States and would end up squeezed between Naples and France while Venice had more ducats than they knew what to do with and would spread across northern Italy like a Rennaissance contagion.
Love the (almost) monthly debrief, still one of the best formats on YT. Informative, complete, bit of banter. Your praise for Lion of Judah really makes me want to hunt down a copy! Fascinating history and a WW2 theater rarely covered in games.
GMT directly sells 2" and 3" boxes. They are white, so you would need to either write with permanent marker or glue the old box's panels to the sides that you want to display to identify the game. Ugly yes, but it's better than putting your gameboard in a zip lock bag. Better yet, buy sturdy boxes just to carry games when you travel.
Just picked up a unique themed game, Chaco, about the 1932-35 Paraguay/Bolivia war. Set in the desert and jungle, the logistics are key. Interesting asymmetry and WW1 type problems, this conflict resulted in the biggest loss of life in the 20 Century in South America.
I think I messed up. I had the opportunity to snag the Last Blitzkrieg, Baptism by fire and Brazen Chariots Opened but unpunched. For 200. And I just ended up getting Brazen Chariots to try it out. Although my hope is that one day Last Blitzkrieg will get an update with the colored banners. (baptism by fire is of such a footprint it feels less nessecary) but with MMP that might be unlikely who knows.
I saw a copy of Ukraine 43 at Games Plus in Chicago on a recent visit. I didn’t look to see what edition but I think it was probably 1st. You might check with them if you’re still looking. I suspect they ship games on occasion
For Thomas van Hare's book games, you can download files from his site, Historic Wings, and cut and paste like Grant said, The incredible thing is he says he has about SEVEN products due this year. MAG 23 is also great fun, and completely differen from the others too.
Love Rebel Fury. It plays so quick and is not complex at all. I am not a big hex & counter war gamer but I really enjoy this. Maybe you can argue that the counters could have looked a bit more beautiful, but that is the only little gripe.

I just got a bunch of games from the Historical Board Game Company- 55 Days of Peking and Battle of Sekigahara are mechanically similar to the Cahokia game you mentioned. I also have their Stalingrad game. All have a small footprint and play quickly which I appreciate. I picked up the Road to Independence game as well based on your review of that one.
