The city of New Rome is the main conflict between Cesar Catilina, a brilliant artist in favour of a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklyn Cicero. Between them is Julia Cicero, her loyalty divided between her father and her beloved.

"The most slappable performance he's ever given." I think Shia will enjoy that one.
Never been more excited for a Mark rant
Brilliant, have been waiting for this for months, minute 4 hahah.
So... I guess Mark didn't like this very much then! 😄
if I can decode old man proper english correctly, I have the hint that yes, he didn't like it
I have not been to the cinema in over a year, however, this film looks so absurd and incoherent that I actually feel compelled to go. Like some quasi-Cloud Atlas.
this is the tru-tru
It's a dream-like fable full of surrealist humour (i.e. bizarre juxtapositions, incongruity, non-sequiturs, irrational or absurd situations , and expressions of nonsense) mixed with deep naive sincerity. The practical and in camera special effects were done by his son who did them for Dracula.
I’m stealing “cinematic toothache” too good 😂
"It just sits there, gnawing away the inside of your head." Love it! 😆
wow, one of the worst films he has ever seen? high praise!
I've seen so much pretentious hero-worship directed at Coppola in all the run up to this film, people acting like the audacity of Megalopolis' premise and tortured production somehow pre-guaranteed it as a modern masterpiece. Glad to see that the good doctor hasn't been taken in by that same nonsense. This film was a doomed vanity project being shuffled along by a whiny hack that lost whatever creative genius he had decades ago.
What a way to end your career
Coppola has made one of the best films of all time and one of the worst…. THAT DESERVES PRAISE IN OF ITSELF
He has made three of the best films of all time. Apocalypse Now is the one i consider his best, and also the best film I've ever seen.
I have been waiting for this movie for so long just to see how much of an absolute train wreck it would be. Can't wait to see it
I almost feel wrong watching this before the movie has come out because I wanted to go in with a clear mind. But Kermode reviewing a new Coppola movie? What a time to be alive!
Victor Salva. Pass.
I'll wait for his reappraisal.
So, Mark recommends it then?
I don’t know. He was sending very mixed signals.
Coppolah
MegaFLOPolis.
“…It is filled with unspeakable dialog that should’ve remained unspoken…” So true of so many movies
As much as I love many of his movies, his scuzzy defense and ongoing support of Victor Salva is disgusting.
From the look of it, Megalopolis seems a bit like a real life farce of Caden Cotard's project in Synecdoche, New York.
Apocalypse Tomorrow!
Most slappable performance. If you don't mind, I'll borrow that one
Cinematic toothache gnawing away at the inside of your head 😂 Brilliant
People seem to fail to understand that most of Coppola’s classic works were all either direct or indirect adaptations of literary works - the only exception is The Conversation (my fav film of his) but even that was heavily inspired by watergate
Cor blimey
“The cinematic equivalent of toothache” 😂
Looks and sounds like an absolute mess, can't wait to see it
I think i'll give this a miss.
Wow Platinum is a slightly sillier name that Aubrey Plaza I guess
I get "Tough Guys Don't Dance" from that clip, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Or a good thing.
From what I’ve heard so far, this film could be used negatively in a competency hearing for Francis
Kermodes scathing reviews is like a DJ building tension before the drop. Fairly cool headed setup before absolutely flipping the tone and throwing all his theatrical energy at the rant. Love it.
So, one of my dirtiest secrets as a cinephile is that I don't like Francis Ford Coppola movies. I usually don't tell people. I feel like it's information that can be used against me when making arguments on another topic.
However, I bring it up here, because watching the commercials for this film have been filling me with a grim and joyous schadenfreude that I can barely describe. I've been loving it.
Coppola's Dracula might be the worst edited movie I have ever seen but I have a hard time trusting people who didn't like The Conversation.
Coppola has obviously made some great films but he's always had this side of him. Does anyone remember the scene in Apocalypse Now when Martin Sheen stays in Marlon Brando 's guest room. There on the bedside table is some light reading. Books that Coppola felt influenced him and this is a way of signaling them.
A fitting end for the greatest filmmaker of his generation. A generation that was handed the keys to Hollywood and then threw it all away in less than a decade.
Good rant. Still want to see it.
I've been anticipating this review.
"bloated, indulgent, pretensious."
I'm sold.
Love his rants - the best!!!😂
Megaflopolis
Could this be this generations The Room?
It absolutely is
… oh dear. 🫢
Oh dear
Oh, dear.
Just watch Eraserhead.
Loved that
This film sounds like utter bollocks, but I'd rather a Megalopolis over an Indiana Jones 5 any day.
The last Indiana Jones is a great script and has some fantastic editing.
Replace Indiana jones 5 with the flash
@@TomBotchii no soul.
yayks....Francis Coppola. What is it with legendary directors making these stupid decisions lately.
The only Megalon I acknowledge is the giant beetle with drill hands who got dropkicked by Godzilla.
Every bad word about this just makes me more thrilled to see it.
He expressly said that is NOT what he telling us to do here..lol.
@@Ohm521 I don't care a whit what he's telling me to do.
Gotta disagree with the Shia Labeouf take. He's easily one of if not the best part of this movie. Consider the part he's playing and how it's written, and I think he did a great job. Movie sucks though.
The Good Doctor is absolutely right here. It was stunningly awful! I could not believe it came from FFC. By a country mile, the worst film I’ve seen this year.
"like taking your ears off with a cheese grater"....I 'm using that lol
This sounds like the film equivalent of YIIK. I must watch it!
I had the nagging suspicion all along that this film was going to be awful. I REALLY wanted it to be great though - Coppola has created some truly remarkable films - my absolute favourite being The Conversation. It would have been great for him to have produced a true masterpiece at the end of his career... But no. He allowed himself to be a self indulgent arrogant old man who is out of touch with reality. Such a shame.
I literally was in Megalong two days ago. I had scones.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but from what I've been seeing here on YT, shouldn't it be: I suffered for my art, now it's your turd?
"Which gradually starts to resemble a Roger Dean album cover..." 😆 I must see this.
03:23 it gets saucy people... Btw, I really liked jack
I’ve seen the trailer and it didn’t interest me.
It seems we have another Cats(2019) in our hands, now I have to see it
So it's good?
I guess it proves Tarantino's theory that film directors lose their mojos after 60 (Ridley Scott's recent track record bears that out too). I don't quite know what fascinated Coppola about this for 40 years and enough to sell off his wine business and plough 120 million smackaroonies of his own dosh into it. Instead of basing it on an obscure episode from Roman history and transposing it to the US, why not just do the more interesting Rome story? Coppola does the Roman Empire, what's not to like? This sounds derivative of many others films like Caligula, Blade Runner 2049, The Matrix.
can't wait to see it dubbed in italian 🤟🏻
So... it insists upon itself ?
Adam and Shia have gotten progressively worse. As soon as I hear either one of them is attached to a film, I know it's somehow going to suck.
Coppola's Catwoman then?
I’m gunna watch it.
Saw this coming.
Sounds great!
Coppolahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
I need to see this
😮😯😂 Savage!
Savage.
I watched this this week. It is a crazy film, but I haven't stopped thinking about it. It's like he's ahead of his time all the time.
Not agreeing with much of Kermodes' opinions anyway, I would still live to watch this movie.
Well, it looks like The Room's time as "the worst movie ever" has ended
So another stinker from Sleepy La Beef 😂
Why does Adam driver keep getting cast in lead roles? All his movies outside Star Wars are flops, he's a box office poison
Because he is an excellent actor.
Because getting movies roles isn't directly related to box office success? These directors clearly see something in him. Leo's carax, Jim jarmusch, coppola, Scorsese, ridley scott, noah baumbach, etc. I see no reason why any one of these directors cares about box office .
no actors are really box office gold anymore. Maybe Keanu Reeves and brad pitt.
