When the cat has an accident, pick it up (using gloves of course) and throw it in the litter box. That way when u introduce her to the litter box, she will know where to go to the bathroom based of the smell. Trust me it works. 6 week old kitten learned it in a day or 2

my kitty was used to pee on paper when she lived with her mom, so i placed newspaper inside the litter. every day i would remove a piece, and when there were none left, she started using the litter box normally. :) it took me 5 days or so

*Always annoyed with our cat and **Trainr.pet** this got me fed up on kicking it out. But what saved it from that was when my mom told us what to do with this program when she brought it up. I must say, they are the coolest ever!*
You can discipline your cat, whenever mine was a young kitten and did something bad, I yelled no and ignored her for the rest of the day. And now she knows what no means, I even use the whole "1 2 3!" When I don't want her to do something.
Many husbands experience exactly such behaviour from their wives. lol

After a LIFE TIME of rescuing, raising & dealing with cats, I can tell you one thing: a cat will either use the litter box or it simply won't... reward, punishment, all that stuff is only effective about 20-30 %. The rest is the cat's free choice. Most cats, however, will use the box instinctively. I HAVE noticed, though, that the most effective influence on a cat, is an other cat.

So used mine but then I taught her to sleep in her bed, whenever she sleeps in the litter box wake her up then put her in her bed,she usually won't go straight back to sleep so rub her back until u see she is sleepy then leave, hope this works with u!
Cats sleeping in a litter box is a GOOD thing. It shows they have a positive relationship with the litter box.
I know this is old but it could mean that they do not feel comfortable in their surroundings. I recommend watching some videos from Jackson Galaxy since he is a great cat behaviorist
I rescued a little kitten from my backyard and I put the litter box down and filled it up. She just looked at me. So my baby brother who was 3 at the time became frustrated that she wouldn't go so he threw her in and she used it. Bam no work needed.
Hey can you help me out? So yesterday I rescued a stray kitten who was very young and my parents are really paranoid about it peeing everywhere and so I need help on how to train it to use the litter box when he or she needs to go. I am really new to training or owning a kitten so I would appreciate some tips cause the video isn't doing it for me.
Bat Omar Like the video said you should bring the kitten to the little box after it eats. What I did was place the litter box in the bathroom and close the door and wouldn't let my kitten go until she used the bathroom. Once she did she was rewarded with playtime and treats. You might have to try a few different litters till you find one your cat likes. If it has a accident on the floor you can easily get it up with pet stain and odor remover which is fairly cheap. The kitten will began to learn over time that the litter box is a clean place to go use the bathroom. I hope I helped and good luck with your kitten!
+Bat Omar Just put it in the box, it will know what to do eventually. when it does it outside of the box, pick up the waste & place it in the box, you MUST clean the floor where she did it to completely eliminate the scent. Never ever yell at it or punish it in anyway, that simply never works, just makes things worse.

My kitten wouldn't go in the litter box but would go to the bathroom right next to it. I went through like 8 different kinds of litter. I picked up a second small litter box and put it where he was going to the bathroom next to the bigger litter box, but this one with no litter in it, and he used it! I added litter to half of that small litter box and he started to use the litter from the one side to cover where he went on the other side of the box. After a couple weeks I was able to fill the litter box all the way and he uses it like he is supposed to now. Never thought I'd get him trained.
I tried the vinegar thing and my cat just went somewhere else to poo. I'm honestly scared to keep putting vinegar everywhere it poos, I don't want its last resort to be my bed.
try putting vinegar on your entire house EXCEPT for your litter LOL

I just got a 10 week old cat and its doing great. Only had 1 accident.
MrJustDIY 10 weeks is too young to take them from their mum, that might give some problems.
AardbijVsAardappel mine is 9 weeks, you get them from shelters they aren’t with there mom
10 weeks is actually fine, its if they are less than 8 weeks. By 8 weeks they are already weaned off their mom.
MrJustDIY mine is about 5 months old and he only had one accident, he was a stray , so he didn't have his mother either way so we took him in 😁
u can avoid litter all together by toilet training cats

I have had cero problems with any of my cats and their litter box . Honestly, cats are smart and they already love to be clean and to use their liter box. I have two 3 week old kittens and they are using their box :) they learned so fast I’m very proud
I barely had any problems with my cat and the litter box when I got him. He did go on my doormat a few times, but if I noticed him beginning to snif and scratch the mat, I'd quickly grab him and place him in the box.
And then I just cleaned the mat and used a "pet repellent" on it (in my case it was a hand lotion with a very strong sent which my cat absolutely loathes) and then it only took him 2-3 weeks to learn consistently where to go.
Now, 3 years later I can place the litter box *anywhere* and he'll still go in the box, he's not that picky about that thankfully :)

This video was very helpful. I have had three cats and two naturally used the litter box. My new kitten Jasmine is having a hard time. I found poop is the corner of my bedroom. I picked it up with toilet paper put it in the box then put her in the box. Hopefully she will get the hang of it soon.

I foster orphan kittens, from as little as several days old. I have found that it works to introduce litter into their confined area at about 3 weeks, and they will start to use it, erratically at first, but they learn. Up to about 3 weeks, they go all over the place in the box.

Contain them in a small area with a tile floor so cleanups are easy. Litter box, food, bed and toys until they learn. Kittens are messy at this age, but they will learn.

I just found my cat a few weeks ago abandoned at a church not too far from my house. We have another cat who we leave a litter box for in our basement because he goes in and out all day. We leave the new cat in the basement with the litter box and food while we are gone and yet I am having a huge issue with her pooping in my room and at various other places in my house😠

So sorry that you had to give your sweet kitty away! I'm sure it was very hard for you but you obviously were more concerned about her safety on such a long trip. I hope you were able to give her to a good home where she will be safe and happy.
My kittens are locked up in the basement because of my dad saying it will potty train them. I even cried even though I can still visit them. They aren't happy and every time I have to go, they cry until I come back. I told my dad I would potty train them for they can be unlocked in the basement and be happy again. Thank you so much for helping me do this deed.
My friend had a cat who was an orphaned feral kitten named Squidward. He had to be litter box trained for awhile after I helped feed him. It's such a shame that he died from cancer last year in February.

I've had 7 or 8 cats since the 1970s and I've never had to train any of them to use a litter box. I just set them in clean litter and they knew what to do. I use the scooper everday and change the litter every four days.

I have tried everything with my 11 month old male Russian blue cat, 2 litter boxes, putting him in one room, putting him on a diet, giving him treats, taken him to the vet. I have tried everything and he still poops outside of the box, and only pees in the box. I clean the litter boxes several times a week too.
+anpippin My late beloved Matryoshka the tabby did the same thing: she only used the litter box for peeing and CONSISTENTLY pooped on the floor. After weeks of yelling at her and making my blood pressure sky-rocket, I simply gave up (getting rid of the cat never even crossed my mind). So, for almost 16 years she peed in her toilet and pooped on the floor. The good thing, however, was that the places she chose for that were out in the open, very predictable, and exclusively on the bare floor, never on the carpet; so, finding and removing the poop was super easy :)) The new kitten I just brought home from the street 2 days ago does the opposite: he poops in the litter box and pees on the floor. I SO MUCH wish he'd reconsider and follow in Matryoshka's steps!!

A plastic covering will only encourage a cat to go to the bathroom on the plastic sheet. Cats are for some reason inclined to pee on soft plastics, like bags, and coverings/tarps etc.
As far as teaching our kittens to use the litter box, we would put them in the box and make them scratch at the litter (hy holding their paws and scratching at the litter) to help them understand what its for. And that worked.

I just found a kitten 3 days ago and I want to keep it so bad. It can't be anymore than 6 weeks. But I'm noticing it isn't going in the litter box. I don't see anything anywhere, but I'm starting to smell an odor. Now, I know the cat is going somewhere, but I just don't know. I will give this a try for a week or two. If it doesn't work, I'll have to find a no kill animal shelter to take her too. She's so precious.

If my home has a garden, is it necessary to have a litter box? Does the same training applies for exteriors?
you will need a large dog carrier. ( not metal) give the cat something (if he/she is not fixed yet) and let them spray- do their thing- or sleep on it. Like a soft blanket or a tiny bed. now after the cat knows its his be- put it in the dog carrier and put a small litterbox (a throw away tray will work too, or something you would use to make a cake it (as long as you dont want to use it ever again) and will it with litter.

Our two month old orange tabby Gus was used to going outside but when my mother brought down the dog from her house we had to keep Gus inside as he was terrified of dogs. He took to the litter box instantly, all i did was put the box down and walk away, in the time i turned around he'd found the box and started using immediately. 8D
