Its really useful to understand how raid array configured as most of the people worked remotely so they will not aware about how to configurre raid array but this video will clear the concept...good Job...keep posting.

@jayleccio correct, Raid 5 does have a spare used a parity, but if you really want to make sure that your server is protected, i used a spare drive. So if a drive fails, this spare will automatically come into play. In a normal raid situation with no spare, your drive will simply fail and you will have to replace your faulty hard drive. Until you do so, your server will run in degraded mode. With spare, the server already has a drive to take over. Does that make sense?

hi, ive seen that you configured RAID 5 by leaving one HD as spare. Im my case, I would have included that last HD on the RAID 5 config - I thought RAID 5 already have a spare functionality. Can you enlighten me on this? Thanks

This is my first time using HP and shouldn't have entertained a G6.

If you want to ad 5 hdd after some time, and to ad the size of the new hdd's.

Yes you can replace a hard drive while your server is running. Your aray should be hot swappable.

All you have to do is replace the hard drive with the same type. Thats all. The Raid will take care of the rest.
