She didn't have more solo numbers because what you see here is her entire repertoire. Ginger admitted she had no formal dance training not even ballet. In fact Ginger stated in her book that at one point a professional dance double was used in a film she did with Fred where she is supposed to do a solo and with camera shots taken from a distance movie audiences were supposed to be fooled into thinking that it is Ginger herself dancing. They used a "ghost dancer" who looked like Ginger from afar. Ginger also stated in an interview that her director looked down on her and at one point asked her to take some dancing lessons. I even read in a few places that Ginger sometimes had a "ghost tapper" that dubbed Ginger's taps into the soundtracks. Two of the ghost tappers mentioned were Hermes Pans and Mariam Nelson. Whereas Eleanor Powell had years of ballet and gymnastics in addition to tap so Eleanor was able to be more creative in her routines especially when it came to turns and therefore was able to create many many different types of solo numbers.

@@jackanthony976 Give Fred Astaire some credit. Even though she was an excellent dancer, he only made one movie with Eleanor Powell, "Broadway Melody of 1940." He made 10 movies with Ginger Rogers. Astaire must have seen something in her that met his expectations when it came to a dancing partner. As everybody could tell, she was a good a dancer even without ballet training, and she was a great actress too. In 1941, Gingers received the Oscar for best actress, Kitty Foyle, against Katharine Hepburn, Bette Davis, and Joan Fontaine, also without any kind of special training. Then she went back to make more movies with Astaire, who apparently could not find anyone capable of keeping up with him in front of the cameras.
As for dubbing the tap dancing post filming, everyone was doing it, Rogers, Kelly, Astaire, Garland, O'Connor, Bolger, Liza Minelli, you name it.

You said that so beautifully, thank you! I also think that Fred was quite mesmerized with her and not just for the fact that they had been together for a while back in the day. I think he was just really happy dancing with her and that shows on the screen in my opinion. She was the only one able and willing to keep up with his working ethic for a prolonged time and she made their dances beautiful and joyful. That is why I enjoy watching them dance together the most, it feels like genuine happiness and affection and that is just as captivating as someone with amazing technique. 😊

By 1930s standards they might have been deemed too thin. Look at the legs of Busby Berkeley's chorines in 'Lullaby of Broadway', for instance.
We think of the 1920s in terms of androgynous jazz babies, but the legs of, say, girls in a precision chorus often appear quite stout.

  • @elainechubb971
    @elainechubb971 Рік тому +4

Ginger's charm was at least partly due to her "everywoman" aspect. She was pretty, but not otherworldly beautiful. She was a good dancer, but not so terrific that you couldn't feel you, too, could dance like her if you had the chance. She was funny, and down to earth when needed, and graceful but not snobbishly so. She was kind of the girl next door raised to another level but still looking like someone who could be a good pal, and a loyal one. And she could put a song over just well enough to make you want to hum along. And she conveyed her character's emotions--love, or irritation, or mischief, or heartbreak. My dad had a crush on her (back in the 1930s)! I imagine there were millions of other men who had a crush on her. And millions of women who wished they had a Fred gazing at her the way her Fred did in the most romantic of their musical numbers ... You could see why Fred's character was in love with her, even if the plot decreed he must fight the attraction!
Of course, Fred appealed partly because he wasn't a hunk He was elegant and charming and sweet, and often his character was just an ordinary guy with (of course) an extraordinary talent--someone just trying to get by in hard times. And the Astaire-Rogers partnership said to audiences, look, hang in there, trust in your love, and somehow you will make it through. Not a bad message in hard ties.

@@barrygriffin1690 According to Ginger's autobiography, it was a movie she did with Fred in which she plays a ballet dancer. Movie audiences were supposed to believe that it was Ginger who performed a very complicated ballet number in the movie. The studio used a professional ballet dancer for the number, put a blonde wig on her and made her up to look like Ginger. They showed Ginger putting on the ballet costume before the number so that movie audiences thought she was really going to perform the ballet. Ginger got a lot of fan mail congratulating her on her ballet number. Ginger admitted in her book that she never let on to her fans that it was not her performing the ballet and nor did the studio. You have heard heard of ghost singers...well I guess there are ghost dancers as well.

@@jackanthony976 I respect your opinions but wish you would get the facts correct before you start degrading Ginger.
According to her autobiography she NEVER played the part of a ballet dancer, the movie in question was Shall We Dance made in 1936, in which she played a Broadway musical star Linda Keane. Fred played the part of Petrov a Russian ballet dancer and he DID dance with a professional ballerina Harriet Hoctor, who was actually listed in the credits. It was NOT supposed to be Ginger and she did NOT put on a ballet costume in the movie. She actually hated the scene.

But Ginger was gorgeous to look at, could sing (so could Ellie, but was not allowed to at Metro), she was an Oscar-level actress in straight as well as comic parts, and she even designed many of her costumes. When RKO signed her and began to mine into her talents, they must have thought all their Christmases had come at once.
No young star today has so much to offer. Ginger went on suspension for more money at Radio, but by 1945 she was the highest paid actress in Hollywood.

JACK ANTHONY you sound like a broken record. I love Ellie, but Ginger was no slouch. She was Astaire’s most effective partner. Period. She could do anything and was a hard worker who was under appreciated in their films together. She was paid significantly less - less than the male 2nd bananas. For someone with no real training, she did alright. Wait. She had Astaire and Hermes Pan training her for 6 years. Not bad. Give her some credit. Yes, Pan frequently dubbed her taps. But those are her legs and feet doing the steps perfectly well. Taps had to be dubbed, even Ellie did it. Plus Rogers was a busy lady. For every film Fred made with her, she made 3 more straight films or comedies.

      Ginger Rodgers was an excellent
dancer and the only one of Fred Astaire"s partners that never complained and that's according to the man himself.People on the set in one of the film's have stated that they were doing a routine and right at the end of every take something always happened when they danced their way up a staircase then danced to the curtain when the song ended.Things had gone wrong with the lighting, the cameras etc when someone noticed that Gingers shoes were pink instead of white and the reason was doing so much rehearsal then filming that her shoes had literally filled with blood and she started to have trouble walking. The director then said they would wait until the next day to get a take but she said no that they had come so close to filming the dance that she wanted it done after putting so much into it that day.On the next take they had it in the can.Ginger Rogers deserved more credit than she ever got and was wonderful to watch in their routines. On another film they got a first take on the dance routine
they were doing and if you listen you can hear her laugh as they both enjoyed it so much.No one can match Fred Astaire but she was fantastic in her own right both in dance and acting ability.

Really? I never saw Ginger dance backwards...are you sure you saw her dance backwards? I think that is just a myth that a group think mentality has bought into. If anything she danced sideways and around Fred sometimes hitting poor Fred in the face with her overly ornamented costumes. I have reviewed her films and I don't see her dancing backwards except for a couple of seconds of transitioning between choreographed movements. If you could tell me where a can find at least five different videos of Ginger dancing backwards while Fred dances forward I'll eat my words.

Ginger sure raised the bar in 1936. Imagine. Just 3 years earlier Ruby Keeler performed a tap routine in 42nd Street the was considered impressive hoofing as she flailed her arms about and clogged humorously as if stamping out a burning rug. Now here's Ginger making tap look smooth and classy with her body one tight package moving naturally... it begs the question -- did tap dance evolve on the silver screen in such a short time, or was this Ginger's trend setting style?

Oh, was that a "burning rug" Ruby Keeler was trying to stamp out with all of that galloping? I thought she was nailing down the floor with her feet. I can't imagine anyone who knew about quality tap dancing would have taken that seriously. Then there was Eleanor Powell who came out around this same time.

Too true about Eleanor Powell... she's still a treat to watch in my book. And talk about perfect dancer's legs and a cute mug! There was also Ann Miller who was said to be the fastest tap dancer. From what I've learned since that last post of mine (and in Ruby's defense), a lot apparently had to do with sound technology in1932 - it as still the early years of talkies. Just by 1935 film companies learned they got better results by sound editing and shooting a tap dancer to a playback -- without the tap cleats and worry about special tap floors, floor mic'ing problems or a dancer falling. The dancer would overdub the tap routine with real tap shoes in a sound studio in post-production. It's interesting how rapidly the studios learned how to work with sound in the 30s.

Completely agree. This was choreographed by Hermes Pan, Astaire's primary collaborator in revolutionizing dance starting in 1933. For all practical purposes, they taught Ginger to dance and I enjoy watching her continue to improve as the films progress. Add in her acting ability and it's easy to understand why she became a huge star and why we still enjoy her today.

YouzTube99 Ginger knew how to dance before she met Fred, she danced in vaudeville, etc, what they did was to make her hidden potential more apparent and become a great dancer, although I don’t think that would’ve happened without Fred?

A lot of it was down to the influence of Bill Robinson, whose smooth and graceful tapping tamped down the clog-dance, Irish-jig tendency. Here he is in 'Hooray for Love' (1935):

Robinson was a friend and mentor of Eleanor Powell; he taught her his step dance and was godfather to her son. The girl in this clip, Jenni LeGon, was signed by MGM to do a cameo in 'Broadway Melody of 1936' but was dropped in favor of Powell.

And the interesting thing is that she only learned how after she and Fred Astaire started making movies together. Ginger Rogers had little to no formal training as a dancer when she and Fred made "Flying Down to Rio," and Fred candidly admitted years later that at the time, "She faked it an awful lot. She couldn't tap, and she couldn't do this and that... but Ginger had style and talent and improved as she went along."
She certainly did improve as she went along, and by the time this movie was made, she was clearly a hell of a good tap dancer, and while she wasn't technically the most skilled or accomplished of Fred's dancing partners, she was far and away his best dancing partner. The two of them had chemistry that has never been equaled, and they complimented each other superbly well, which is why no other studio ever made a series of musicals that paired the same two performers in so many films.

One cut at about 0:07 - then a _sixty second take!_ (Compare the final number in "Chicago" [not that that isn't enjoyable, but the number of cuts is dizzying to a Fred-and-Ginger fan].)
    Very short skirt!
