Very useful to take blood pressure regularly at home. On the rare occasions I go to the doctors i end up having my blood pressure taken and it is always quite high. I then have a doctor who wants to prescribe me lots of medications i don't want to take! The reality is I have a bad case of White Coat Syndrome and get very agitated and nervous at the doctors. This makes my BP soar. I have also concluded, sadly, that some Doctors are well aware of this and I have had my BP taken through my jumper, with my arm in the wrong place, while being asked sharp questions etc etc. Since taking my own BP I have found it to be in the perfectly normal range. My previous doctor gave me meds for BP. Then asked me to go back after a couple of weeks with a chart noting my heart rate and BP twice a day. When she saw it was normal she said see, the meds have worked. She was furious when I told her I hadn't taken them.

    Ontario here too!!
I have all three devices. At the start of 2020 I started taking daily readings and tracking of each as well as recording all medications and supplements (including Zinc, Quercetin NAC, magnesium, high doses of D and C) Being asthmatic, I felt it would be a quick way to identify if I should get medical attention. To date I am only a single dose vaxxer and that was after cancelling several times. Been exposed to C-19 numerous times and up the monitoring and increase Vitamin C and D at those times. To date never have tested positive but most of my triple vaxed friends and family have it at least twice.
My GP found the charts useful when my BP was being a little more closely monitored when I had a couple higher than normal readings with her. Also verified my unit with the clinics to see readings were comparable.
Appreciate Dr. Campbell's calm words of wisdom and views of both sides of issue.
    Stay well all!

How high doses of vitamin D are you taking? You should take vitamin k2 with it as well as it can cause bone loss if you become vitamin k2 deficient. Can also cause calcification of your circulatory system.
Depends on how you're taking D3. Sunlight derived D3 doesn't cause this since it converts to an inactive form if you're creating too much.

Before I caught COVID last year I noticed my resting heart rate, which is normally 60-65, was 80-85 for no obvious reason in the 2 days before I actually got COVID symptoms. Something to try is a ketogenic diet. This is because of our evolution away from the other great apes. Our food has been animals and our gut no longer digests fiber and even starch has to be boiled up to 20 minutes before it can be digested by amylase and turned into glucose. Our appendix is a remnant of what in most other functioning ape herbivores is a oxygen rich microbe multiplication gut called a cecum that in the colon provides a means to turn fiber into saturated fat, so when they are eating plantfiber (from leaves or shoots) they are in ketosis. These apes only occasionally get sugar from fruit. They also have twice as large colons to handle all that fiber. Gut is very expensive tissue especially the cecum as it has to get a high oxygen load to allow high microbe multiplication. about 7 million years ago they got separated from the chimps and had to adapt to open space. From finds it is shown that they collected large bones leftover from killed large animals. This allowed the colon to shrink and the cecum to disappear so there was more energy for the brain. At 2-2.5 million years ago homo habilis started hunting mostly megafauna because they didn't run away and were easy to mislead in traps or spear.
We started agriculture less then 6000 years ago and our health has declined, brains are 11% smaller then hunter/gatherer versions. But food was more abundant especially after megafauna was almost eradicated and small animals have to much protein and not enough fat for our metabolism. By switching to carbohydrates from plants we survived without adequate carnivore foods but a glucose metabolism is not healthy long term. Mainly glucose is instabiele and the 6 carbon ring structure opens up to have a double bonded oxygen at the end of the chain which is very reactive (similar to formalin). This is why our body tries to regulate glucose levels with insulin. Cells are forced into taking up glucose by insulin and as soon as blood glucose levels jack up our pancreas starts secreting extra insulin. the storage hormone Insulin also has the function of building up fat tissue levels while not allowing fat to be used.
Glucose causes inflammation. This can be avoided by not eating carbohydrates but instead getting energy from fat. On a low carb diet your body starts switching from glucose to producing ketones that circulate and are the preferred source of energy in the body. This is no longer inflammatory.
if you want to try it, just eat the fattest meat available like ground meat that always contain the fatty snippets from the expensive cuts that are made as lean as possible. I also eat liver, but you can also eat only egg-jokes (whole eggs are to much protein) . The most problematic carbs are wheat, barley, oats and rhy (so no bread, pizza or pasta). you could always try it for several weeks just to get well.
      Success, Herman

My family made sure we had an oxymeter (and obviously thermometer) at home for when we had Covid. Was really interesting to take a baseline for each of us and then when we got Covid, we recorded our 'obs' every 4-6 hours during the day. Tracking the progress of our fever was helpful, meant we could avoid taking anything to treat the fever with the confidence that it didn't get to high and oxygen/BP remained good and then we could watch it resolve.
I think I will invest in blood pressure machine too, just for the hell of it. Never know when it might be useful.

One thing most people don't understand is that blood pressure fluctuates rapidly. I generally check my blood pressure sitting in the same chair with my arm resting on the table at heart level. Then I'll wait 10 minutes and check it again. First time is usually higher. I can lower my BP from 140/84 to 119/76 by a few minutes of relaxation techniques. I seldom trust the first reading unless it is consistently high.

From a computering background here, where heuristics is king, let me add to these instruments. If you just take your temperature once, and it's showing 'fever', maybe what you should do is lay down a baseline of your temperatures, at the same time of day, for a few days. to get a gauge of yourself. like how a barometer - barograph works, it plots a graph with some history, and it's often a good indicator of rain.

@@svalbard01 , yes, health care workers call it white-coat syndrome because people get anxious when they see the doctor in his or her white coat and being anxious causes the B/P to spike. It's sometimes near impossible to get an accurate B/P at the doctor's office for people who have this syndrome and doctors will often ask patients to keep a daily record at home in order to get a more accurate record of the B/P.

Also, thank you for mentioning the compromised readings for smokers, I've been wondering why my partner who has lung issues and smokes has higher readings than I do, now I know. Still, it is useful to know if his "normal" readings change over time. I have a wrist blood pressure unit, as I hypertension runs in the family and I take my readings daily and have for years, it is just easier, and again, the accuracy is less important than monitoring changes. I've had the overnight from the clinic unit, and so I have a good idea of what the wrist unit is telling me.

I bought duplicates of everything to leave at my parents and daughter's houses to do baseline measurements and keep a record if something becomes out of normal range or someone just doesn't feel well and I am too far away to be at the "bedside". It has saved me a trip or two, calmed my parents and daughter's households down, to take an active role in the baseline vitals and symptoms. It gives them some control and participation of care with whatever symptoms they verbally share with me or their doctors.

Being Observant of total surroundings can be invaluable in rendering First Aid. Maybe a simple splint all that’s apparently needed. But was it a fall from a chair? Or a 10 foot ladder? Did they hit their head as well? These are things you as a parent can ask that adds to the classroom teaching. This develops Critical Thing Skills not often given in school .
