  • Today I talk with Eduardo Verastegui, Executive Producer of the film Cabrini. We talk about what inspired the creation of the film about an under-recognized saint, how the success of Sound of Freedom made this film possible, and how he and his team respond to the criticism of the film. Eduardo also makes a special announcement about an incredible new project he is working on that may end up being my all-time favorite film.

i was so disappointed in those who criticized the movie, i believe they missed the point. I'm catholic but never heard of mother cabrini, my wife made me go see it with her and I'm glad I did. this movie was enough for me to fall in love with mother cabrini. God bless all the people involved making this epic true story movie. we need more movies like this.

There's an actual agenda in Verastegui. He didn't manage to be the independent candidate for our presidency and so he did this movie to keep leeching.

I heard of her but was not curious to know her story, maybe the name Mother Cabrini as opposed to Saint Francesca X Cabrini threw me off because even as a child I was fascinated by Saint's lives.

No we didn't miss the point. The director did. He is trying, much like the current hierarchy, to appeal to non-believers by stripping her story of anything remotely spiritual and replacing it with "will-power"- this is the old Pelagian heresy- and several injections of modern Feminist woke ideas into an 19th century nun!! Read the review I posted directly above.

Now that Mother Cabrini has come to the spotlight with this movie made for everyone, how about part two, a second movie about her spirituality? And it must be the same actress of course! Eduardo, that would be awesome! Please consider it. 🙏🙏🙏🙂. God bless everyone who reads this message. ❤

I enjoyed this episode. My husband and I saw Cabrini last night and really enjoyed it. We attend TLM and related to the desire to see more of Mother Cabrini's prayer and spiritual life. This episode really cleared up why the movie was approached in a way for all to relate to and I appreciate the effort to make a movie Catholic that is universal... which is the Catholic Church. Beautiful movie and we plan to show our oldest daughter soon!

Madre Cabrini reminds me of my mom. She’s small but strong & will fight for what’s right & constantly helps the poor & sick & those who migrate into America. She’s from Mexico, she grew up Catholic, & as a teen came to the USA & converted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Even though I am not Catholic, I love seeing the similarities we have & also seeing the incredible faith of devout Catholics like everyone in this interview. Catholics are true Christians💞

Beauty of the criticism it is bringing curiosity to Mother Cabrini which will encourage others to find out more about her. As a Catholic I loved it and understand all symbolism unfortunately I feel sad that those who do not understand our faith miss the symbolism therefore are not fully understanding how God is working in her and in those around her to make mountains move and to do all the work God had planned.

St Francis taught; "Preach the Gospel - when necessary use words." Unfortunately too many Christians don't understand the meaning of that wise teaching, and practice, which Eduardo applied in this movie. Mother Cabrini's life was continuous prayer in action.

Faith-Free Feminism & Ferocity by Vincent Weaver
On the opening night of Cabrini, I attended the movie with my wife, four of my five daughters, and my future son-in-law. The cinematography was excellent. The acting was (mostly) superb (How can you go wrong with John Lithgow playing a villain?). Cristiana Dell’Anna as Mother Cabrina captured the screen with her facial expressions alone. Romana Maggiora Vergano as the young prostitute also offered a notable performance. Though only capturing a small part of her overall life, Cabrini also provided a nice education on the unique and powerful life she led.
I enjoyed and was moved by the movie through about the halfway point. But then there was a moment when the Sainted nun leaned into the character of Dr. Murphy who was helping her get a hospital started, and she said in cheeky fashion, “See if (one of the likely benefactors) can add another zero to his contribution.” That’s when it hit me. Something absolutely fundamental was missing from this picture - faith.
Cabrini (rightly) portrays the title character as a powerful, strong-willed woman who simply won’t take ‘no’ for an answer. However, the way this story is told, it is ALL about “will”. That strong will was, no doubt, critical to her success. She was utterly fearless and displayed remarkable ferocity in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges. But nothing - and I mean NOTHING - is mentioned about her putting her challenges to prayer (unless you count a very brief scene of her saying the blessing over a meal with the others in her order near the beginning of the film). She’s never shown kneeling in Church or before His Real Presence in the Eucharist. No indication of attending mass. No appeals to God or even looking up for guidance.
The opportunities to show the guiding force behind her mission were legion, and yet - crickets. The closest thing we get to her faith even mattering is that she wears a habit and talks to quite a few men in the Catholic hierarchy. (Every one of those churchmen - save the Pope - came off as cowardly and dismissive of any efforts to do the work of Christ and His Church. Pope Leo XIII was at least a tolerable character, but the true greatness and holiness of this giant of the 19th century wasn’t acknowledged in the least. The local priest at Five Points in NYC might as well have been Homer Simpson in a cassock. If he had been given a yellow hue and had they used a doughnut in place of his pail full of noodles, the comparison would’ve been complete.)
The icing on the cringe came right at the end when Mayor Gould (portrayed in classic vile fashion by Lithgow) realizing Mother Cabrini had him boxed into a corner, offered a backhanded compliment, “You would have made an excellent man.” Cabrini smiles wryly and replies, “Men could never do what we do.” These are not the words of a Saint - regardless of gender. This is false pride on full display, and it’s a poor representation of this woman and her work. The line struck me as a gratuitous grab at feminist sentimentality. I winced when a couple dozen people in the theater applauded such words. It’s no coincidence that this movie was released on “International Women’s Day”. It’s just a shame that it tried so hard to champion feminism rather than focusing on the beautiful, transcendental nature of genuine femininity that St. Cabrini certainly personified.
One final note of support for Angel Studios, despite my negative comments above. Thank you for making the effort to put out quality films with meaningful content as a counter to the vacuous attempts at moviemaking by most in Hollywood. Even if Cabrini missed the mark, your work is needed and provides hope and encouragement for a fallen world.

Enjoyed reading your thoughtful analysis. As a devout Catholic, the same parts that gave you pause also gave me pause. But as Verastegui stated, the movie was not made for devout Catholics. And upon further reflection, I view this movie as a beautiful work of art while at the same time elevating a Catholic Christian woman wearing a huge cross around her neck who said, “we can do all things through Him who strengthens us.” In some ways the God parts may have been more powerful because we did not inundate the viewer with them as some Christian movies do. She devoted her life to serving the poor and demonstrating her faith through her works. It was bridge building and though not perfect, did succeed in focusing on goodness, truth and beauty. 😊

Yes, I do think doing TV series about the saints might help I would love to see a TV series about mother, Cabrini, mother Angelica Saint Patrick Thomas Moore, Christopher Columbus. There were those type of series done in a couple years ago on some of the cable networks, but not about scenes why can’t we use that model like when they did the series about the war of independence from England, or shogun others that series would be great about the Saints because we would be able to tell the truth about the Saints or even the crusades I think this would be a wonderful idea

How they did what they did with the movie, is called....WISDOM! Bella didn't receive this harsh criticism (before 'smart' tech...and anti-social media..that's what it is) and they didn't show any one praying like they are getting criticized now. It's narcissistic - I'll say it. The people complaining the most, do NOTHING about the problems. Get to work, or zip it, with love ;)

I’ll be honest, I also believe men should bring their sons brothers and so on. because a lot of women in the Catholic Church became Saints after the feminist movement, so there are some Catholics that object to this, just based on the fact that women are not supposed to speak in church, meaning, take the man’s place of ministry, forgetting that Mary Magdalene gave the most important message, which was the Jesus had risen from the dead. so there is a way that a woman can serve the church and men can maintain their roles in the church without breaking God‘s laws, but this is also become a debate, because sometimes women in certain positions in the church have made problems just as men Seems that the women are blamed More it is something to think about I don’t even think that this is intentional, but the devil does mean to divide people this can bring people together.

Agree 1000% - So many stuffy, holy rolling 'TLM' goers picking apart the film, overlooking Cabrini's courage, fortitude despite suffering....meanwhile, that community likely got the swabs, shots and don't break a sweat to serve others. It's a disgrace. This was excellent. And I'm not just saying this as an Italian Sicilian American, which by the way, we never cried "racism" despite our people enduring it. And when they got here, they contributed, built, and gave with their blood, sweat and tears...FORTITUDE. Seriously, the complaining is a sin.

Your opening line attacking the Catholic church and Her liturgy tells me everything I needed to know about where you are at on your journey. You honestly need to get to a place where you live and breath Holy Mother Church and you become one with her. With the Bride of Christ. That is what we are called to do. Be Holy.

It’s not overlooking how great the movie is. We just wanted to see a bit more of her relationship with God because that was the driving force behind all that she did. That’s all!

Good movie but I actually prefer the EWTN version made a few years ago….it didn’t minimize Mother Cabrini’s steadfast faith.

Perhaps they are going to criticise the woman that imitates the virgin, that she is not Holy enough etc. Or the face must be always a light, so nobody see something to criticize.

So many missed opportunities to Glorify God. Like when the prostitute said that no amount of water in the world could cleanse her, Mother Cabrini could have incorporated something about Jesus' precious blood. And when they said they must trust in themselves when heading to America, they should have said trust in God. There was also no portrayal of her prayer life and yet there were many times she was seen awake while the others slept and yet her lips didnt move as if in prayer. Too many opportunities missed in my opinion. 🤷‍♀️ too much focus on her corporal work but not her spiritual work. Good movie but it could have been better.

This is not a good Christian movie. It's a feminist propaganda film that misrepresents and defamed in CRINGE fashion a great Saint. Huge disappointment

I was just wondering this. How many non Catholics, non religious people will actually watch this film and be inspired? When I went to see it I was 1 of 6 people total in the theater. I think Catholics are the first to need to be evangelized and inspired by saints and their relationship with God.

@user-mv2tg8hc8c not a good movie as it disregarded Cabrinis Catholicism and focused on secular feminism. Catholics come when it's an Orthodox Traditional film not Hollywood

Had I known that Cabrini wasn’t made for Catholics, I would not have spent my money on it, here I was trying to be supportive. Oh, come on!!! No one expects mother constantly praying! Just show that more. Show that part of her too. Unfortunately, there are nuns who aren’t faithful to God. The actress herself said that she’s not a practicing Catholic and that playing mother Cabrini didn’t affect her Catholic faith more.
