10 Castle themes: Tales of Phantasia - Midgard Legend of Zelda: A link to the past - Hyrule Castle Blue Dragon - Gibral Castle Dragon Quest/Warrior 2 - Chateau Donkey Kong 64 - Creepy Castle Lufia 2 - Castle Castlevania 3 - Overture Uncharted Waters 2 - Royal Palace Final Fantasy VI - Figaro Castle (Edgar and Sabin's Theme) Dragon's Lair 2: Escape From Singe's Castle - King Lizard (level 4) (C64 version)
Needs more attention to what they were able to do with the Amiga sound chip. Still just four channels, they were able to imitate as wide a range of sound styles from acoustic guitars to full on high pitch fifes. The Amiga version of the Gauntlet 3 soundtrack is full of Rush style prog movements, and the opening theme to the Amiga version of Ghouls N' Ghosts is flat out amazing.
That Dreamcast Ecco song, wow, I only played that through once quickly back in early 2001 cos I found it cheap in the bargain bin, so it wasn't even a major thing to me unlike say Mario 64 which i poured countless hours in, but it is amazing how memories of that game came flooding right back instantly after I heard a few seconds of it.
Yeh, this needs to be a top 20. Tooo many great Follin bro tracks. Chronos, Agent X, Akrillic from Plok, L.E.D. Storm, Gauntlet 3! Argh I love em so much
The Follin brothers were indeed masters and you could have easily done a Top 20. They were truly inspired by progressive rock and it show with their soundtracks. I'm surprised the Plok boss music is not on the list. It's pretty amazing how ahead of it's time it sounds. Time Trax was cancelled because the soundtrack probably would have taken up a large portion of the memory. LOL. It's so clean sounding and makes you wonder how the Genesis could ever produce that type of quality. I keep hoping an indie dev hires Tim to do the soundtrack for their game one day. I would love to hear Tim put out one last chiptune soundtrack but sadly I believe he retired from composing.
Nice presentation! It's amazing to see how chiptune composers at the time managed to find some techniques to improve their compositions and make them "unique". On the C64, Jeroen Tel used a "glitch" (i don't know how) to emulate a 4th sound channel! On Gameboy, Alberto Jose Gonzalez was very versatile with the Wave Channel ; he could imitate many instruments or basses.
Awesome list! One of my favorites of Tim's is Ghouls n Ghosts on the C64. It's insane what just a few beeps and boops can accomplish! Screams, rain, thunder, drips of water...
Thank you, and also ... Agreed! I especially like when the composer can match the environment of a stage and make the music feel according to that stage. A lot like the Ecco spot on here
Aquamarine Bay is definitely the standout hit from the EtD:DotF OST; Gets you hooked on the game right away. I was surprised when I found out that Tim did it because it is a far departure from a chiptune banger, but I also wasn't surprised because it is just so damn good.
it's such a chill and relaxing theme, i can listen to that at any time. and yes, I agree, surprised.. but yet not surprised once i thought about it, lol
Another oddly familiar song to add: Vulgus level theme = Pick up the pace by UTFO and don't remember if mentioned before Green Bristar sounds influenced by Freestyle Express by Freestyle.
My first real exposure to this artist was while I was collecting gaming music. Agent X 2: The Mad Prof's Back. Sounds nothing short from mesmerizing on the Amstrad CPC platform. I'm sure it is just as great on the C64. I'll be collecting that platform's music sometime soon.
The songs are over the top awesome but I personally feel they might not be as catchy and memorable as the stuff Nintendo and SEGA produced during the same era. Kinda like how most modern JRPGs have absolutely badass music but at the end of the day you'll be humming Bob-Omb Battlefield.
Yeah, I can agree with that at least to an extent. These compositions seem complicated and in-depth, but they aren't as memorable as some other gaming tunes that are really catchy
in my humble opinion silver surfer pictionary solstice the intro and ending and plok's boss theme sound epic another underrated composer is alberto gonzales

RIP Geoff. Lots ot love to the family. x

Plok Beach at NINE?!?!?
Yeah that's insane. I don't agree with this list at all.
Music is a personal taste.

Chip tunes or not, I have gotten lost in the Follin Brothers' music. 🔥

An NTSC Dreamcast with a PAL controller made me chuckle. :)
To be honest it’s no laughing matter!
The Sliver Surfer soundtrack is amazing! The game is way too hard though like most NES games. Lol
thanks for the list of songs. thanks for the 30secs long intro
Glad you gave Sky Shark an honorable mention, but where's the love for Target Renegade? :(
Plok "Beach Theme" is straight up inspired by early Genesis all the way to its 13/8 time signature. Look up "Cinema Show" and/or "Los Endos".
Another oddly familiar song to add: Vulgus level theme = Pick up the pace by UTFO and don't remember if mentioned before Green Bristar sounds influenced by Freestyle Express by Freestyle.
That Indiana Jones one... that is really hard to believe that came out of an NES. lol
That bassline is crazy for an NES

The only suggestion I made was level one from that game, c64 version
I did not know the Tim had a brother that makes music too......anyways.
Follin Bros Music for the next Smash game.
#PlokforSmash
I would have definitely picked Drawing Game from Pictionary instead of the title screen. (Jury's still out on Solstice vs. Silver Surfer.)
it was a difficult choice, that's for sure
AMIGA's version LED STORM main theme are composed by Follins or just a remake/re arrange ? Cause the AMIGA one is just fantastic (ingame theme too)
From what I understand... AMIGA and C64 are both by Tim Follin and Mike Follin
What is the next list about?
Top 10 Castle themes
Glorious list, but Target: Renegades title scren music didn't made at least an honorable mention? :(
Hard to take the list seriously when not one of Tims Amiga stuff features.
Yep the list here is good, but i agree with you, tim follin done some incredible amiga tunes.
LED Storm is an honorable mention

When is the next oddly familiar? I know I had given you a bunch of songs a while ago.
Next episode will be an Oddly
Time Trax the show was awesome
The only game on this list that I played (recently because I downloaded a shit ton of games) is Spider-Man/X-men game
You aren't really missing much... While recording the game footage for the episode, I came to the conclusion that most of those games suck
Tom & Jerry NES?????????
great underrated soundtrack
