Ford Mustang Mach-E GT- The Prison Bar Dilemma. A Non-Performance EV?

  • The Mach E is fast... on paper. But why is it doing so terrible in 1/4 mile races? Why does it sometimes feel like you are going to get passed by that 2010 VW Jetta?
    The Answer: 5s boost restriction and the prison bars. If the battery isn't 100% happy, the creep into your acceleration display and block the power available from the battery. Why isn't Ford making this clear on the website before you order the car?

    What Ford released was GT-Beta or GT-lite. They need to fix this !$@# or let 2022 be the last model year.

      At least call a cat a cat. It isn't a performance vehicle if it has a hard time delivering the performance. Make potential buyers aware of the limitations and avoid buyers remorse after spending 65k.

    I test drove a Mach e GT Performance last week in cold weather and had a similar experience. I found this in the owners manual under the “Instrument Cluster - Power Gauge - GT” section: “The power gauge displays the amount of power going to the wheels when accelerating or maintaining speed. When the system limits the available maximum power, the right side of the gauge shows gray lines representing the proportional reduction in available power.” The gray bars are still a bummer, but at least they call it out. The 5-second rule is also a huge bummer. They don’t call it out specifically, but as you found, the longer you stay on the accelerator, the gray bars start accumulating.

      Rest assured Ford is pumping updates into the Mach E. I got another one last night that brought it a number of cool new features. I have had the car just under one year and have had 3-4 Over The Air Updates and a couple more at the dealer. My car keeps getting better

    I do totally Agree that if you're gonna market something as a GT it should perform as a performance vehicle, shutting it down after 5 is just not right, take the GT Emblem away, You gave us a bone and not the whole meal. For what my car is though I do like it very much and I own the GT performance model. Do not want to piss off the true Mustang enthusiast so they gave us performance for 5 seconds, had they did anything else this car would blow the brakes off of any gas vehicle Mustang on the market in the 1/4 mile

    hey felix. i watched a video from a drag-racer who has contacts to ford. they said if you do 0-100/60 you should use the active mode. he tested it and it worked so maybe you try this.

    The 5 second limit was a big part of why I opted for Premium vs GT. Didn’t see a reason to pay for power that could arbitrarily be taken away.
    One suggestion … try doing your 0-60 run in Engage mode, instead of Unbridled. It’s counter-intuitive, but I’ve seen it suggested that for straight-line acceleration, that’s the mode you need to be in.

    • @rajaram4658

      This is non performance, unbridled is fast, but unbridled extended is what your referring to right?

    • @RobStevens64
      @RobStevens64 2 роки тому +1

      @@rajaram4658 No, I mean Engage. Unbridled Extend actually restricts power even more … so you can have more time at the track. It’s a battery preservation mode, not a power mode. Yes, I have serious issues with the way Ford has chosen to name these modes.
      I’ve seen several reports that if you’re just doing straight-line 0-60 runs, Engage is the mode recommended by Ford’s own engineers.

    I noticed the Mach-e periodically draws over 20 amps when its reached a target level (say 70%) and is just sitting(no preconditioning set). Is it maintaining the target level or the battery against cold temps? If so, this is a huge potential waste of energy. I have an i3 and it will sit for several days NOT plugged in and will remain at a constant state of charge even in very cold weather.

    Great video. I'm curious what the user manual says about the prison bars.
    Motortrend released a comparison between mach-e gtp and tesla yp. Oddly the mach-e had lower 0-30, 0-40, and 0-50 times, but higher 0-60. This suggests that Ford starts cutting power before 5 sec. Any thoughts?

    • @felix_talks_about_cars4704
      @felix_talks_about_cars4704  2 роки тому

      Thanks! I went out to the car and checked the virtual user manual. It only has information that the element displays information about battery charge and discharge. Nothing about the bars. I also didn’t find anything on the website when you order the car (also nothing about the 5s Limitation or once you go over 80 mph), which I think is leaving out a pretty important piece of information for a GT buyer. I have never had full power since I got the car so I can’t say 100%. However it feels sluggish pretty quick during acceleration for a 480 HP car.

    • @CarsLife
      @CarsLife 2 роки тому

      @Felix Mueller Yeah, I just checked the online owner's manuals and nothing about this gauge in the instrument cluster, which is disappointing. It's probable Ford just being overly careful about battery warranties and not wanting to be faster than gt500, especially in the quarter mile.

    Felix, the Mach-E GT falls short in a lot of ways but I'm not sure you can hold Tesla up as some paragon of virtue for out of the box performance. Plenty of posts on TMC forum of Performance 3/Y not hitting numbers. Model S/X need to precondition with a disclaimer button, drop into Cheetah mode, and be on a prepared dragstrip to hit their claims. To zip around in Sub-Zero temps with the Mach-E GT and claim the zero-60 is worse than advertised seems disingenuous and takes away from your legit gripe that the five second boost function is garbage.

    • @felix_talks_about_cars4704
      @felix_talks_about_cars4704  2 роки тому +1

      Point taken! The dodge demon comes with a box with drag front wheels to hit its’ advertised number, too. It’s kind of ridiculous.
      If my car isn’t plugged in, I’d like to be able to decide if I want to sacrifice range to precondition my battery for performance. I don’t want to drive to work (coming off the charger at home) in a GT and drive back in what feels like a 2014 Prius. If I want to precondition the car and use energy to do so, I should be able to. Also, if it is able to precondition there should be exactly 0 bars.
      Maybe it’s about managing expectations. Why not lock the full power into a designated performance mode that requires extra steps? Probably less of a let down if that can only be achieved with certain prep (like high octane fuel or warming up the engine in an ICE).
      Again, good point, well noted!

      @@felix_talks_about_cars4704 yes, I totally get it. I think a few of the Mach-E GT's shortcomings will be addressed in the near future via OTA. I'm definitely interested in seeing how your Mach-E experience goes, especially considering how many miles you appear to drive. Good luck and congrats on the new car.
