@MrThrash37 Good question, I noticed it was showing in the viewfinder, but not when looking without, there was a distinctive purple glow, which may have been generated by the equipment on board.....it will be interesting to know what causes it....Bob
@Bevoin1970 These Network Rail dedicated trains are in a bright yellow liver Paul. The low lighting on stations down here, push the camera to its limits, so careful positioning to catch some of the light is critical....Thanks as always for your uplifting comments...Bob
@accubar Wednesday night...this set went as far as Milford Haven, they go to West Wales several times a year, under the cover of darkness.....Thanks again....Bob
@TheMichaelWilcock Thanks Mike, I wonder if it's night light equipment for the on board cameras......it was a strange phenomenon, especially when it was only visible through the camera....Bob
@MonochromeLoco This was at 20.30 in the evening Keith so not too bad. The purple lights were invisible to the naked eye, and are ultra violet lamps for night work.....Thanks again.....Bob
Fine video Bob, a few years ago filming at night like this would be very difficult but the modern cameras cope so well. The comment from the driver was a lovely touch, and well deserved. Hearing that 31 departing was a real blast from the past.
Well done again Bob with a good news story. I noticed the effect of the lights on the video camera when I recorded the train at Barry Island a while ago. I'll have to find the tape and post that too. All th best Mike
I think that's the Structure Gauging train. One other thing you might notice at 2:31 is a flash of red light as it goes under the bridge; I think that's the laser that's mounted in that black wagon that measures clearances & such like.
Nice one once again Bob,sorry for been out of touch been sorting one or two issues with the buffering that i have been getting with yt do not know what i have done but i seem to have cleared it...............John
Great stuff Bob, you can't beat the older diesels for a good show and this one certainly didn't disappoint. No idea what the purple haze is but the driver was certainly friendly and obliged with a rousing departure! We had a failure on 2Q88 up here in Ayrshire earlier in the week to track recording equipment failure, so it had to be aborted. Thanks for sharing it Bob. Ken
Interesting shots of an unusual train. I'm sure other comments re the purple light being UV are correct. I used to use them when colourmatching in the plastics industry in a previous existance.
@bobnweaver Most of these Network Rail trains are based at Derby Jeff, and regularly travel to all corners of the UK, so you may get lucky one day, although much of their work is carried out during the hours of darkness...Bob
@markthetankengine Thanks very much Mark, I try and keep South Wales on the map I'm usually wearing a black Dai Cap when out filming in the Winter...so if you see me around then please make yourself known, it would be nice to chat with you and your father....Bob
My favourite photo of a Class 31 would be in the July 1978 issue of Modern Railways with a high viewpoint of 31285 negotiating through Tees Yard with a block train of steel products and who would have thought that this engine would still be around at the time of writing. Jon
The purple lights (assuming you mean on the DBSO) are Ultra-Violet lamps which I understand are to assist sensors detecting any flaws in the railheads such as cracks, flat-spots etc. It's odd how UV light is almost invisible, even with UV tubes like those in nightclubs that make your white T-shirts glow! Nice video by the way. 31285 was certainly clagging like a good'un!
Hi Bob,another great video...must have been cold though! Class 31 on the main line....Fantastic. Those Ultra Violet lights look futuristic. My son and I are going to the Dean Forest Railway in February, never been there before, looks good on UA-cam Though. Cheers,Scott.
@siobhan104 It was quite spooky at the time Tim, but several kind people have explained that they are Ultra violet lights on the DBSO...Thanks again....Bob
Great catch Bob. It's always nice to meet a fellow youtuber, especially when you don't expect it! Been there and done that with LetMadnessBegin. Anywho, another well produced and captured video. A like from me. Will.
What a great video. It's nice to see a friendly member of the railway fraternity, but then most of them are. As for the weather, I'm beginning to think you like suffering for your art! Altogether a nice sequence. Thanks for posting.
Hi Bob, terrific video as always. The purple would indicate a UV light (and like you said, is invisible to the naked eye. Infrared would turn out red in a video and I think gamma rays and X-rays are too dangerous to use near the general public, whereas UV shouldn't be too damaging. Thanks for posting. James at SVN
What colour are these engines in daylight Bob? is it yellow? - I definitely think your camera has much better night time qualities than mine does, I do like the eerie looking purple glow, seems odd and yet good at the same time. I liked it any way.. ha ha Superb camera work as always... :-)
@U2ATOMIC Thanks again Scott, I hope you both enjoy your visit to the DFR, it's a beautiful area to visit...Bob

@sandletters39 Thanks for that John, it's remarkable that these old machines have been with us now for over 50 years....Bob
@TheMichaelWilcock Thanks Mike, I wonder if it's night light equipment for the on board cameras......it was a strange phenomenon, especially when it was only visible through the camera....Bob
Still present, despite the night and bad weather. I call that professionalism! Congratulations Bob.
Philippe
@MonochromeLoco This was at 20.30 in the evening Keith so not too bad. The purple lights were invisible to the naked eye, and are ultra violet lamps for night work.....Thanks again.....Bob
@comebersum Thanks Cutter for your kind comments...Bob
@allan5919 Always difficult to film in such low light conditions, so your comments are greatly appreciated...Bob
It's fantastic! Really fine nightshot with the beauty! :)
Fine video Bob, a few years ago filming at night like this would be very difficult but the modern cameras cope so well. The comment from the driver was a lovely touch, and well deserved. Hearing that 31 departing was a real blast from the past.
Ah the old ones are the best ones, the dulcet tones of a 31 snarling away are delightful, glad you endured the damp conditions Bob, nice one, cheers.
Well done again Bob with a good news story. I noticed the effect of the lights on the video camera when I recorded the train at Barry Island a while ago. I'll have to find the tape and post that too.
All th best

@puffernutterlou It was strange Lou, as it approached, you could only see the Ultra violet light through the camera and not the naked eye.......Bob

@cmeonthemove Thanks very much for the informative reply, I'm extremely pleased that you have helped me with this matter.....Bob
@canvids1 Thanks Wayne, always a challenge when filming in very low lighting conditions...Bob
Nice one once again Bob,sorry for been out of touch been sorting one or two issues with the buffering that i have been getting with yt do not know what i have done but i seem to have cleared it...............John
The purple glow on the dbso is from the infra red lights used to film the route as it's fitted with infra red cameras Bob.
Thanks Richard, it always seemed strange that whilst my camcorder recorded the infra red lights, they weren't visible to the naked eye.
@1Z88 Thanks Will, trouble was I couldn't respond in the middle of filming..hope he didn't mind too much...Bob

Early starts and a good camera do it all Rich, unfortunately the picture quality suffers in low light, and appears to lose the HD quality....Bob
@HSTHoward Thanks Howard.....much appreciated...Bob
@TimHall42 Thanks again Tim...interesting comments re the UV lights....Bob

Bob's up to the minute with the news again! Well done, hope you didn't catch cold? I presume it didn't come our way - didn't see it, anyway.
@balmesh It went down West on Wednesday Night passing you at around 22.00 Alan, and back in the early hours...Bob

@howarth004 Thanks Dave, it was touch and go whether I stayed any longer, but I'm glad I did now....Bob

Great catch Bob. It's always nice to meet a fellow youtuber, especially when you don't expect it! Been there and done that with LetMadnessBegin. Anywho, another well produced and captured video. A like from me. Will.
@afield23 Thanks very much for that explanation, it is always great to have an answer from an insider...Bob
What a great video. It's nice to see a friendly member of the railway fraternity, but then most of them are. As for the weather, I'm beginning to think you like suffering for your art! Altogether a nice sequence. Thanks for posting.

@AndreiTupolev Well spotted Andrei, good to have sharp eyes watching this material...Thanks as always...Bob
@pwalpar That;s more than I do Walter.....Thanks as always....Bob
I think it's UV lights, I'm not sure what they use them for exactly, maybe detecting rail faults?
@kenbrowne1947 Thanks again Ken, it's been elusive to say the least, but finally caught it and I am pleased I waited in the end....Bob
The purple lights are infa red.... invisible to the human eye.... Great video as always

Great Video Bob...when was the last time a 31 was that far west?
