  • But analog synthesizers are always better, right? You have a Moog One, right? You believe in the analog warmth... DON'T YOU!? Fear not, my fellow synthizens, for I have seen a future where analog and digital synthesizers can live together in harmony!
In all seriousness, though, I have had a number of requests for a video on the Waldorf Iridium Keyboard, so here it is along with some of my favorite patches that I have made since getting it.

Perfect Circuit reached out to me, and I was exceedingly flattered, humbled, and surprised. I have been a fan for a long time and have purchased gear from them many times in the past. I think they are just great, and I even happened to FINALLY get to stop by their shop when I was in LA for a wedding this past summer, which was SOOOO FUN. I thought about the offer for a few months, and finally decided to do it, because it will help direct people to a store I love, and it will help me to buy things like a better camera, lights, etc. that I am discovering are quite necessary to produce really good content. My gear probably won't change that much - that's not really my style, if you haven't noticed - and I don't really see myself trying to get into the review game or make a living off of this stuff. So, I highly doubt you'll see me making videos "reviewing" the latest music doodad. But yeah, this got long... I'm at peace with that. So, basically, if you are planning to buy some gear, this is a cool way to keep a dope synth shop going and maybe get me a better camera along the way. If you are against affiliate link stuff, but you still plan to buy some gear, please do it from one of my other favorite stores; I won't be offended and still think you are awesome :D

I’m fairly new to synthesis and am in awe of some of the sounds you are able to create. I know it’s not your jam, but if I had a wishlist video, I’d like to see you walk through how to do a patch on your Iridium, then show how to do a similar thing on a VST, like pigments. Nice video and you echo my thoughts on this synth. I've been playing since for almost 40 years and I have had so much fun with the Iridium..... "fun" is a word we don't really hear much about with synths. I've been enjoying making my own wavetables from samples.

It’s one of the best ways, in my experience, to get really unique sounds that have a lot of richness and detail. Another great way to do this is to use a controller and send the same midi signal to all of them and summing the result through a compressor that has some nice character.

Great video and your take on VST v Digital Synths is spot on. I recently got a Roland Jupiter XM which is just fun and so immediate. On the PC I use Ableton and have the excellent TAL Software emulators for Jupiter 8, Juno106 and SH101 with Ableton's 808 style drums. You could somehow cobble together an XM like project in Ableton but then you would also need to hook up a MIDI controller and keyboard plus the time start the laptop and Ableton. Just cannot beat the experience of on turning on the XM on a whim and within 3 seconds you are building multi-part scenes with knobs and sliders and that i-arpeggiator (love it or hate it!!) and I happen to like its minikeys. Totally different experience. There's a time and a place for everything. More videos please!

Hey, dimund. Thanks for this vid. The Waldorf Iridium was totally off my radar because I've been feeling so overwhelmed by the sheer number of new synth companies and products available on the market that it boggles my mind. I was on a very long hiatus from playing live gigs, but 5 years ago was recruited by an old friend to play in his band. For this application, I've limited myself to playing my Korg Kronos 2 because it can handle everything needed to play in this particular cover band.
But, for the music that I like composing and because there are just so many synths on the market, I got an Arturia's Keylab Mk 2 MIDI controller and Arturia's Vintage Collection of vintage synth recreations and other very cool sounding VST plug-ins (e.g., Korg Collection, Vital, Spitfire, etc.).
With so many synths and virtual synths on the market, what criteria do you use to choose one over the other? It seems that most of them have their own unique strengths. Cheers and Happy New Year!
ADDENDUM: Okay, you partially answered my question toward the end of this vid. Thanks.

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Рік тому +1

Yeah, there are sooo many products out there, but I tend to look at x main things: sound quality, hardware/software interface, build quality, and what role it will play for me when making music.
For me, I am not gigging, so the equipment I have reflects that. I also really value solidly built equipment that favors metal over plastic. I hate menu diving, so knob-per-function setups with big screens and well-designed UIs are important. Lastly, each piece of equipment has a role to play with little redundancy - e.g., Moog One for modern analog vs Waldorf Iridium for digital synthesis.
I like having a small set of really well-made, powerful tools, that will last me a lifetime :)

BTW a tip with the custom power cable is to order a backup. I film wildlife and go far out into the wilderness sometimes. I have at least one backup for everything. It can help a LOT when the cable breaks, because they often do at a point. So when I buy hardware I usually tend to get a backup cable for everything. Does not cost much but can then save a lot of pain. I will then put a text label on each cable so I do not mix them up. I once was at a penguin colony far away from everything and then my controller for my drone completely broke. Thankfully I had a backup at base camp so could just go back and get it. Yes it was a 5h walk but far better than doing a 1 week round trip! Next time I brought a smaller drone as a backup too. I think it is interesting that art and music has many combinations. Many of my lessons with music I bring to art and some things from art back to the music. Music for example taught me the importance of constant mechanical repetition which is something that helps me with cameras. I would just stand for hours and practice panning and getting focus right, just like with scales on a piano. My goal for the future is to combine film making and music more in the future.

This was a very enjoyable video. It seems this (and its sibling, the Quantum) have so much functionality (ie different types of synthesis) that it's really hard to fully capture the possibilities of this instrument in a video. One thing I've wondered is if this can get similar sounds to an older flagship sampler, the Roland V-Synth which excelled at time-stretching and formant-shifting which made for some very expressive "ethnic" sounds and vocal sounds.

Re the Waldorf external power supply: I have a feeling it won't be hard to replace. I bought two extra power supplies for my Hydrasynth from Amazon (one for home studio, one for gig bag, and one because I'm really paranoid). You have to make sure you match the voltage, current (amps), and the tip (both diameter and +/- on the inside/outside --- standard seems to be negative on the outside).

Another video worth listening and watching. Never considered the Iridium. Would it be safe to say it’s a more powerful version of a Novation Peak? What are your thoughts on getting the desktop modules instead of the keyboard? I was thinking you could keep the One up front and just tap into the Iridium desktop module since the Moog’s keybed is soooo very nice. Just an idea. Cheering for the recent success with Perfect Circuit and wishing more offers will happen this year. It’s also cool that you don’t plan to conduct “reviews” but rather show us what you like about any tool by using it while you groove out. What camera are you using now to record your videos vs what are you looking to really get that will put a smile on your face and heart? Keep doing your thing and Happy New Year!

When you play I see that you sometimes play with 2 keyboards at the same time. You played with the mini Moog and the Iridium at once. Is that something you recommend? When using keyboards in the past I remembering splitting keyboards into two sections, but maybe that is not possible with these analog beasts? I'm getting the Quantum Mk2 as my primary keyboard. I also have the Kontakt S88 Mark3 and Roli keyboard. Just debating if I should use them as a second keyboard or get something else like the Moog (expensive though). Maybe just a very small keyboard I can have below it and run software synths from it. If you have any thoughts would be welcome. It was a bit eye opening when I saw you playing on two. I just thought THAT seems like what I have been missing. For example when I play my grand piano I always miss having other backup instruments. Haha, sorry for my ramblings.

I really don’t like patch cables, so I’m at peace with the multiple AD/DA conversions that go on in my signal path. Rupert would probably not be thrilled that I am working at 48k, but I plan to get an RME UFX+ and an RND master buss converter in the future. So, that should facilitate higher sample rates, better clocking, and being able to push the Shelfords even more without worrying about clipping my converters since they will go straight into the MBC.

I love the vst vs hardware arguments...
People really get into it over them...
I'm firmly on the hardware side...
I get that there are great sounding vst's...
But when you look at the side by side comparisons of hardware synths that now have vst versions with the same sounds, the vst's fall short...
And that's not even accounting the synths that the vst developers know better than to even attempt to replicate...
But sound aside the biggest advantage multiple pieces of hardware provides is the work flow...
It's just way better for creating imo...
The most annoying thing with hardware is not having total recall between the different brands which is the best advantage vst's have...
Synth companies would be wise to agree on a universal system that makes total recall possible between different brand hardware devices...
Some started moving in that direction in the early 2000's but that was also when the vst push first started...
So ultimately that direction didn't happen which is a shame...
I like software for recording and editing audio, but not creating it...
To me that's the best approach because like you said with new operating systems and updates you end up having to regularly abandon what you had to have the "latest and greatest"...
At least by having your instruments separate from the daw functions you don't have to give them up after having paid a bunch of money for them when and if you decide to get a new computer and new recording software...
Definitely a more economical approach in terms of not losing money by no longer being able to use the things you bought...

    • @dimund
      @dimund  Рік тому +1

It took me a while to figure this out, but I’m in total agreement! I try to just record audio and midi and not worry too much about the patch recall.
But yeah, I bought waves however long ago, doesn’t even run now. My old versions of izotope, komplete, etc. - same story. That access virus I sold? Still working like the day it came off the factory line I am sure.
I pretty much limit my software to FabFilter, Valhalla, and Ableton. I have a couple of things like KClip that are for specific tasks, but it’s nothing that I couldn’t live without.

You never get that with a VSTon a computer, great as they are. You hit the nail on the head when you said software is a PITA. It is. I still use it, but I don’t see it as an ‘instrument’.
