It looks like the local is praising Kelly as well as saying his sorry and double thanking Kelly for being cool as shit and not going off on him as well as tag teaming that wave together as that was a moment he will never forget on the save wave and same Barrell as the true GOAT of surfing. He is prolly mad he didn't have his GoPro out with him but maybe he will find this guy that has the footage so he doesn't have to convince his kids he wasn't lying when he pulled in and got pitted with the GOAT himself. So cool and legendary of Kelly to give the man his moment so that he could cherish it some and enjoy it while it lasted only a few seconds more.
That's a heart felt moment. Something that guy will never forget. Cool as hell.

At Cocoa beach 1979, I watched this hot little ripper and told him he had a great future surfing, he looked at me kinda funny and caught the next wave with his buddies. His mom had taken the kids to the beach and I mentioned to her on the beach he was really good and she said Kelly
eats, drinks, sleeps and talks surfing all the time and she smiled.
Only a few years later, his career began.
I can’t even do the electric slide side to side. Surfers 🏄♂️ are truly amazing!

I literally dropped in on Kelly Slater at Tables by Patrick AFB about 20 years ago (this was right after he went to the bald look). Didn't know who it was of course and he was wayyyyy down the line so I thought it was fine. I felt so bad when I turned around and he was right there. I said hey I'm really sorry about that and he was like, it's cool, there's plenty of water for both of us. I introduced myself and he said nice to meet you I'm Kelly. I eyes mist have gotten as big as saucers because he just started laughing. He was seriously cool about the whole thing.

I lived on North Shore many years and Kelly spends most of every winter there. He has ALWAYS shown so much respect to everyone. In the water, at Kahuku golf course, at Foodland, on the beach, parties, everywhere. Best guy in the world. 🙏🏻❤️🤙🏻

That's Betet Merta and Kelly at Padang Padang. That isn't some random local. Betet is the man and he could have any wave he wants out there, and most importantly, he is known to Kelly.
Kelly is also friends with Rizal and the two of them were actively trying to get barreled together as well at Padang. It wouldn't surprise me if Kelly and the locals were trying to coordinate a double barrel.

Well, he could’ve straightened out and yielded the wave- I’m sure Kelly has the ability to maneuver a high line around him. That’s likely what I would’ve done, reckon.
But we also don’t what really happened here. Maybe Kelly knows this guy and it was planned, or knows him and it just happened in a spur of the moment good fun type setting, or maybe Kelly yelled to him as it happened and said “don’t worry all good, party wave- Let’s get barreled!” or something to that effect. 🤷♂️

For real, Kelly is a pleasure to be in the ocean with. Always has a "hello" for everybody. Never seen him in a bad mood or ever be arrogant. Nice dude all the way.
I was surfing a secret spot once and Kelly Slater was out there. Kelly was riding a wave, and there was a completely unmakeable section that was about 50 feet long. I was about to drop in and then thought better of it. Kelly ended up doing a huge floater over the section going faster than I’ve ever seen anyone go, the bottom of his board just a few feet from my face. I was so glad I didn’t drop in. I would have never lived down the shame.

This is a great comparison between a very good local surfer and a world champion surfer. Slater is just solid as a rock with his shoulders square to the direction of travel. The local not so much at first but does get it together for the barrel. Cool to watch for sure.

I grew up on Gulf Coast but went over to surf Sebastian whenever we could. Monster Hole too.....just me and a friend out there once, after we had just returned from 2.5 months in El Salvador we were 17) and were looking for something big....creepy out there!

Yea, I remember when Slater first came on the scene. He took a Lotta flack for being East Coast, Florida surfer. Said he would never be able to compete with the big boys, no big wave experience, blah, blah, blah. He let his surfing speak for himself. Now here we are 2023 and he's considered the GOAT of surfing!
