- In the depths of the drought, we found a heroic display of hope. With her own life on the line, a mother elephant remained fiercely devoted to her baby. Shoulder-deep in mud and unable to move, she continued to protect him the only way she could, shielding him with her trunk. Tiny as he was, the calf was equally brave, refusing to leave his mother’s side.

Established in 1977, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (SWT) operates the world’s most successful orphan elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, rescuing and hand-rearing orphaned elephants and other animals that have lost their mothers, all too often as a result of human activity. But we do much more than this. Through our Aerial, Anti-Poaching and Mobile Veterinary Units, we safeguard the natural environment and provide immediate assistance to wild animals in need. We also secure irreplaceable wilderness areas so that animals will always have space to roam and work with local partners and communities to ensure people and wildlife can live alongside one another.

Every time I see these gentle giants in distress, I die a little inside. Thanks to these hard working people for saving them. May mother nature bless you all!
Yes. I feel I am dying everyday with all the things we do to the animals and to the planet.
Mother nature is not a person, neither is the planet.
You can care about animals without all the hippie shit.
They're not so gentle. Try watching a bull elephant for a while, the only elephants we see on UA-cam are cows and calves - NEVER the bulls. Highly dangerous and powerful creatures that can kill you without meaning to.

Lisa; I couldn’t have said it better! As soon as I saw them, I started crying immediately. One is definitely not prepared to see elephants like this. Glad that it was a successful rescue. Poor animals were probably hot and thirsty. That adds another element of sadness to the situation. ✌❤

@Serenity Smith Yes, some videos I can’t even bare to watch. Even if two animals of the same species are fighting. But if a young animal like you just described is being attacked and killed, I can’t turn it off fast enough, it’s too painful to see.

Little guy was just as protective about his mom, as she was with him. That last time he stood up and went to her side was precious. But then they realized that they needed to be tranquilized. Yay for Sheldrick Trust! 👏🙏❤

happy to see this rescue effort was in time to rescue both elephants. From watching past rescue efforts in mud holes, Appears the R Staff knows what to do --and was ready with Tran. Drug when Baby ran back to Mom. Fine effort and not enough Kind words for all who helped out and enabled two elephants to return to the Wild.

I love that in the Herd the new babies are always coddled and protected by the big sisters and aunts too. I wish my human family was more like that. Instead none of us live within a 75 mile radius of one another. Fun fact …A new baby elephant born to big sisters have a higher survival rate than babies born to brothers.

I can't remember the last time I shed a tear; it's been many years. Everyone did a fantastic job of coming to the rescue.
Goodness that was heart-stopping and heart warming all at the same time. I had tears in my eyes and a huge lump in my throat. The baby rushing back into danger to be with and protect his mum was adorable. Thank you for all involved, those that reported it and those whose heroic efforts freed this beautiful mother and baby. I'm delighted they're safe!

I want more people in the world to see these rescues. It would add to the humanity that is starting to erode during the past 3 years or so. These are such beautiful videos. The elephants are more civilized than a lot of humans. But the rescuers are the heroes here. They do what is needed, no matter what. And lovingly explain it to us. Like not usually anesthetizing an elephant during a rescue, but a mother with her child is another situation. This elephant mother did her best to not let any of the men approach her baby which she covered as well as she could with her trunk, pulling the calf closer to her. Heart-breaking stuff. And so that's why they anesthetized them both -- to be able to do the rescue. You can read about all this on the above video on how they rescued this young family. There's always more info there. So ----- I am IMPRESSED with this team and their ability to make such quick decisions. I love every one of them. Thank You.
