  • Harvey Mason Jr, is an American record producer, songwriter, movie producer and currently the CEO for the Recording Academy. Mason Jr. was born into a musical family where his father, jazz drummer Harvey Mason Sr., and mother Sally Mason, both attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Harvey penned his first song at the age of eight for Grover Washington Jr. titled “Love Makes It Better”. He has written and produced songs for artists including Michael Jackson, Justine Timberlake, Chris Brown to mention few. In addition, he has produced music and television and films, including Dream Girls (with Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson), Sparkle (with Whitney Houston) etc. He was elected as the chairman of The Recording Academy in June 2019, became its interim president and CEO on January 16, 2020, and then assumed the permanent role of CEO on May 13, 2021.
In September, 2022, we gave him the opportunity to visit the motherland and the first place he touched was Ghana formally known as the Gold Coast; here he had a spiritual connection with his root. He also took the opportunity to find out if it was conducive to host the Grammy’s in Africa. During his stay, we hosted a special meet and greet Dinner at the prestigious Nsuomnam Restaurant where he met some industry players, musicians such as, Rocky Dawuni, Kidi, Samini, Joe mettle, Abeiku Santana, etc which proved to be a successful networking engagement .
As part of his visit, he took the opportunity to engage with some leading brands and entities to explore the chances and affirm his findings. One of such brands was KGL Ghana, a group that focuses in digitalization in Ghana and emerging markets across the sub-region with diverse areas of expertise in Fintech,Logistics,Agric, Property Development and Commerce.
He visited the Ghana Tourism Authority, a state agency under ministry of tourism, culture and creative arts responsible for the regulation of tourism in ghana through marketing, promoting, licensing, classifying, researching and developing tourism facilities and services. Another visit to the Minister for Education Ghana, they discussed on the importance of Arts in Education and harness the possibilities of creative arts in the country and beyond.
He paid a courtesy call to the Rwandan Embassy in Ghana and had the chance to experience WearGhana by Chocolate Clothing,a leading fashion brand in Africa.
The Grow, Unite, Build Africa (GUBA) Awards 2022 took place in Kigali, Rwanda where Harvey Mason Jr, was awarded as the ‘Entertainment Mogul of the year.
GUBA Awards which is a non- profit Pan- African, Business and Innovation high profile awards event which seeks to recognise, celebrate excellence and innovation of Africans, the diaspora and organizations that work towards the advancement, empowerment and progression of Africa.
We also pay a courtesy call to the British High Commission in Kigali to further explore and network. He toured the historical Rwandan Genocide Museum, the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the genocide. It is the symbol for remembrance and to prevent future mass atrocities and genocides.
He finally met with the Rwandan Development Board responsible for the investment opportunities affairs of the Rwandan economy.
He enjoyed his stay in both Ghana and Rwanda.

Dentaa, a Ghanaian, is really working and helping the African music industry but unfortunately Nigerians are the ones going to get all the credit and awards.
It happened in the 20th century, when highlife started in Ghana, it evolved to Afrobeat, but Fela is now getting all the credit.
In the 2000s around 2010-13, Ghana started Azonto which got very big across the world especially the UK with musicians like Fuse ODG spearheading it, a Ghanaian British DJ called DJ Abrantee working for a popular radio station in the UK (Choice FM) now Capital Xtra asked for permission to create an African playlist and named the playlist Afrobeats instead of Azonto to involve all Africans and kept African music on rotation to spread the music and culture, but now look who's getting all the credit and recognition.Nigeria. It was DJ Abrantee who gave wizkid a chance to perform in the UK for the first time after he saw him perform at the Ghana meets Naija concert in Ghana, but what do we get after all this? disrespect from nigerians.
I really wish Ghanaians weren't Pan Africanists but Pro Ghanaian just like how Nigerians are Pro Nigerians not Pan Africanists.

Denta , always love your content when i watch . Very impactful. But this guy kind of dissapointed me when he stated he did not know anything about Ghana or Rwanda to the ambassador. I mean I am from Zimbabwe where we did not experience slavery but we studied and know about the Trans Atlantic slave and how Ghana was one of the major ports used to perpetrate the evil. Almost everyone knows about the genocide in Rwanda, my own family assisted a few young Rwandans that walked all the way from Rwanda to Zimbabwe to flee the genocide and ended up in Europe as refugees. Just surprised someone in 2024 would say that but again maybe he meant he does not know the countries intimately.

AFROBEAT existed in Ghana in 1920, we invented it, so it is wrong that the Tourism Board does not know the history of music in Ghana. It was highlife, Afrobeat before Hiplife, very ignorant. The LATIN and KPOP music he is referencing are all Black Music they are copying so I don't understand what HARVEY is talking about

You always attaching yourselves to other people's glory that is why Ghana music , movie, comedy industry will always remain under Nigerian shadows and play second fiddle to Nigeria.. Afrobeats is a Nigerian music anywhere in the world ,if you don't project what you know you will always cry and remain under Nigerian shadows.. now almost all your local champions want to sound a Nigerian when doing afrobeats... Music identity is parts of people's culture, just like how the rest of the world copy and sing like Jamaicans when doing real reggae dancehall music, that is how the rest of the world copy and sing like Nigerians when doing afrobeats music.. ghana is so useless to the Grammy, till date no ghanaian artistes dead or alive has a grammy award, even Grammy don't see ghana worthy of hosting an African grammy.. people don't claim music genre online, they claim it through ART, as small as Jamaicans the world couldn't take their reggae dancehall music from them... @@fesderi3933And guess what you just did what you accuse your fellow Africans of doing. Why do you feel the need to insert yourself as a Nigerian in this local discussion about Ghana's music?
The discussion in question is about our origins and knowing where our original music of Highlife came from and how it contributed to today's Afrobeats. Just so you know, Ghana is ok with Afrobeats or any other African music being owned and patronised by any and all Africans - that's the idea of Panafricanism that we live by.

It's interesting how some promote their country under the guise of being Pan-Africanist. How is Ghana the Gateway to Africa? Is it the most visited country in Africa? If the man chooses to stop by Ghana first before heading to Rwanda, so what? If he was coming from Asia, would he stop by in Ghana first? Also, the AfCFTA headquartered in Ghana is no "icing on the cake" for Ghana, nor does it signify Ghana's economic prowess. The bloc itself is yet to benefit from the idea and Ghana is definitely no powerhouse when it comes to African economies. Lastly, I'm not sure that I understand how Rwanda stands out as a Pan-African nation in East Africa over Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. Was Julius Nyerere not from Tanzania and well known across Africa? Respectfully, most Africans had never even heard of Rwanda until the genocide in 1994. Paul Kagame? Really? Feel free to promote Ghana, or any other countries that you wish, but please do not mislead the uninformed.

The pain of Naija is real 😂 Nothing stops you from promoting your country anyhow.
Ghana can decide to promote itself as the exit out of Africa and it will still smell as sweet (apologies to Shakespeare).
So go on, call your country anything you want and that won't stop Ghana from branding itself as the gateway to the motherland.
Your pain is real and Ghana lives rent free in the zoogerian mind
