Smith and Jones were very popular down here in Australia, like most of the double acts, Two Ronnies, Hale & Pace. I've never seen Mel or Griff do these shows though.
Mel isn't quite right about how different we sound though, there are rivalries from state to state, but you can't tell from the way we speak which state you are from. I am from Western Australia but if I travel to the east, they can't tell. A lot of foreigners say there is a difference in accents, but there isn't.
Miss this funny fella.
I never did like Aspel but Mel Smith you were so Fantastic and very missed. R.I.P. Sir.
Brilliant..
Loved Not the 9 0'clock News as a kid and his later show with Griff Rhys Jones. I'm sure Mel was great fun to go out for a few drinks with.
Grew up with Mel and griff, miss him

Aspel and Company: Mel Smith Interview (1986). 23.8.24. we live in an era of hysteria.... no idea why these shows seem laid back in comparison.
Stubby holder - those foam beer holder.

Feels very 70s. And a terrible intro. Who wrote it! Mel proves he was the real talent of Not the 9 etc
