Fascinating video! I've been wrestling with similar topics myself. Mechanisms change and perhaps even meanings at times, but what is true will always be true. I loved your ending. "Our ability to understand symbolism is acquired through a growth in our experience." This definitely (on a basic level) seems to be similar to being un-evangelized into being Born again. One cannot truly know the depths of a relationship with God or fall under His grace without first growing through experience or learning the meanings of scripture. To an unbeliever, God often seems hidden... that is until they have the key the Gospel. Beautifully done video essay.

Ohh that's right! And that goes back to the No Country For Old Men video, and about the Seventh Seal. The Silence of God. God is especially silent to someone who has never read His word or spent time growing in a spiritual relationship with God. While God does not speak to us directly, He certainly is not silent to His children.

Watching this what came to mind was the trivium, cybernetics and object versus subject distinctions
Of course there are notable other studies as well like social constructionism, constructivism and information theory
Again you covering hermeneutics a few videos ago was so good to encourage others to think about, most are so unaware of it and how truth in my opinion isn't defined by the 'local microcosm' alone but the 'universal macrocosm'
I'd really like to complete my work on what I call the 'eject' which is much like the superego or universal consciousness, I believe is part of Christ's Logos
Some call it the collective conscious/collective unconscious or the metaphysical mind, while ego is akin to the subject and ID would be chemical determinism or the objective
Anyway much needs to be said to qualify and somewhat quantify these thoughts I've shared here
I think you're capable of exploring the generals laid out and probably already do

So the meaning is always there in plain view, you just have to be able to see it? Like for us watching ex machina we have to have knowledge of film's use of symbols and someone could watch the film without knowing.
I think I explained that poorly but I think when wettgenstein says "everything is open" he means you just have to be interested or have knowledge of that topic to get all the meanings and the techniques used to imbue them

I recently finished John Vervaeke's series on the Meaning Crisis. While before I would always process meaning dichotomously as subjects ('throw under') perceiving or failing to perceive meanings inherent to an object ('throw against'), Vervaeke gave me the very useful concept of "transjective" ('throw across') to describe to things pertaining uniquely to the relationship between subjects and objects (e.g. people and pineapples, viewers and films). Now I'm playing with understanding meaning as a transjective phenomenon. The fact that I see Christ in Shawshank Redemption now is not something objective in the film nor purely subjective in my mind, but it is transjective, it is beyond me or the film in the relationship between us, which now includes your videos.

It was interesting. The problem with the example Wittgenstein chose is that he didn't use ambiguous language. His words were too simplistic, direct, and without alternative meanings. It's the ambiguity that allows for "hidden meaning", which is to say metaphor or symbolism.
I really liked the clip about the Turing test, and how they chose to question the nature of what is considered consciousness instead of assuming robots can't be conscious. It's thought provoking.
The interesting thing about the "other mind problem" is that it's actually possible to figure out if people do know what your thinking through mind games. It's disturbing, but fascinating.

I think this video explains semiotics rather than symbolism. Symbols (in the classic sense) are like patterns, they can be understood at multiple levels, and applied in multiple contexts. And Wittgenstein, among some great things that he said, had some wrong ideas (especially in the Tractatus period), like sentences being "representations" of reality, a better understanding is that words infer realities, and meaning is found in a network of inferences.

Reality can’t be understood without metaphor!!!
Edit: Well first let us define our terms, by metaphor I mean a thing regarded as representative or symbolic of something else, especially something abstract.
By reality I mean existence that is absolute, self-sufficient, or objective, and not subject to human decisions or conventions.
Because we are human and we cannot get outside of our humanity we must use our subjectiveness to understand the objective.
This sentence is a visual representation of sound. We have taken phonemes and broken them up into an alphabet that then allows us to form words that are commonly used and commonly spelled to hear each other without sound.
Yet what I am trying to say is deeper than “the written word” is an abstraction of sound.
A simile is a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g., as brave as a lion, crazy like a fox ). Similes are a type of metaphor our experience of some thing and use it to deep in our meaning of another.
“As brave as a lion” works only because humans have seen a lion try to take down an elephant. This is only possible because of symbolic thinking that others have similar experiences with. Because things are so complex we simplify them to a symbol. This allows us to communicate with others for a close enough understanding of what each other means when we talk. The Dialectic is how we learned, and our language is filled with shared symbols of meeting.

  • @falcondark5338
    @falcondark5338 3 роки тому

Hey, so I've been watching this video several times a month trying to make sense of it, because it shouldn't be that confusing to me; I've thought about this a lot.
Now I think the key is to make a distinction between two instances of "meaning". Meaning 2, say, is the meaning of a word, as found in the dictionary, socially constructed you might say, everything "Professor Wittgenstein" says (In the clips at least, I haven't read the Blue Book) pertains only to this instance of meaning. Meaning 1 is the pre-verbal thought in your mind. This meaning can never exist outside the "interior world that exists inside of us". This distinction is very tricky, because it's so hard to think a thought without putting a word to it, and as soon as you do, it becomes Meaning 2. But sometimes, when I can't think of a word for something, I am aware of a pre-verbal thought in my mind, a meaning without a word.
So words, then, are meaning transportation devices, powered by social interaction and observation, which, when used with a certain level of skill, can provoke a reasonably similar pre-verbal thought in a mind separated by an otherwise impassable divide.
I will try to illustrate this distinction using quotes from the video.
"...the signified is the intangible thought or meaning we associate with it". 3:00 So "signified" is obviously Meaning 2, but "intangible thought or meaning" sounds like Meaning 1. I would make it: "...the signified is the intangible socially located meaning that provokes a unique but similar pre-verbal thought or meaning in our mind".
"...encourages us to think that [the] meaning (Meaning 2) of a word is the mental process (Meaning 1) lying within our heads". 3:22

There is an active element - our imagination - otherwise we would understand everything _instantly_ , the moment, we are exposed to it, _unable to err_ .
It is our capacity to fail in our active, 'constructed' judgement that we are _free_ - unlike a machine that obeys it's design with mechanical precision - albeit reflecting the flaws of it's inventor, even when it comes to machine learning as recently exposed by the defeat of the most powerful GOOGLE GO bot by a mediocre human player...
Unlike the _nominalist_ claim, before there was man, there was already meaning - 'the word' ('o logos') - that is why there is reason for _hope_ beyond our inevitable shortcomings, even if the sum total of everthing will always escape us like a mystery.

Interesting. I would love to sit down and have a real conversation with you. I wonder whether you agree with Wittgenstein or not, because this seems to imply consciousness is meaning itself, and I'm interested in how you feel about that.

I’ve been going round and round on that very question. Meaning seems to be an imprint of consciousness on material things.

I suppose that meaning cannot exist without a consciousness to create and recognize it. Be it a human consciousness, or the sublime consciousness of a transcendental entity, i.e God. I would say that consciousness is a codependency for meaning. Without it, meaning cannot be made or appreciated. And perhaps, consciousness cannot exist without meaning because consciousness itself is meaningful. It's fascinating to think about.

@@youthnation1 (please excuse the time delay I live in europe) As an imprint then, are you suggesting the meaning is exclusively to be found in conscious experience and is projected onto the object say; or, that the object inherently has meaning and as two parts of a relationship consciousness is the wax that the meaning is imprinted into? Or a third thing?

    • @No-oneInParticular

@@hedgeearthridge6807 you appear to be suggesting (with a few added implications from me which I will detail briefly here) that nothing exists without consciousness.
If meaning cannot exist without consciousness, then there is nothing with any meaning. "A Beginning of the universe" has a meaning because it implies a middle and an end. However, if there is no consciousness, even the notion of existence itself no longer has any meaning. Do you agree with my logic?

You don't have to look in the mirror and observe your brow to be furrowed to know you are engaged in thought, so the behavioral definition of thought or consciousness cannot overcome Descartes. Nor could Wittgenstein, for all his sound and fury, answer Brentano, which is why the problem of intentionality is still unsolved.
