Today we're going to look at one of my favorite "charisma icons", Russell Brand. He's one of the sharpest people when it comes to speaking off the cuff.

the ability to flow between humor and sincerity is something thats fairly common among people in recovery. I've heard a lot of people share in meetings similarly, where they joke one second and then talk about something personal

It's not that he's just "doubling down" on his jokes, it's that he doesn't let people take control and quickly change the subject or break him, which also shows that he remains confident no matter the scenario. All of his behaviors go back to displaying confidence in a nutshell, no matter how you flip it or choose another way to interpret what he's doing throughout these clips.
He is a great example of how anyone can come from being drug and etc addicted to someone more conscious and still haven’t lost his uniqueness. He hasn’t change himself but his bad and destructive habits, and now he wants to pass on a good message of everything he has learned, from bad experiences, and that is a great way of leadership. He still makes jokes and still jokes about his past self. That is VERY smart. That is only for very smart people. Great human!
Actually, he didn't prob. - 'come from being an addict ,' - he was normal BEFORE he BECAME an addict.. then had strength to 'come Back ' to reality..

I mean, he could pretty easily start a cult I feel. I think he's doing a good thing by just not abusing his powers, even if half the stuff he talks about these days are mumbo jumbo.

@@holysecret2 Yeah, maybe not mumbo jumbo.. I know he has some good stuff to say, but half the time I feel like it just sounds prettier than it is actually helpful. But maybe that's just me. I would say overall I am a fan. I've been subbed to his channel for a few years.

Russell Brand genuinely likes humanity and he does not take himself seriously, he never panics in front of people, after all they’re just people, and that gives him clarity and composure. Combine that with a hedonistic sense of wanting to enjoy every moment of life, and that’s what you produce, a powerful, persuasive force loved by the people who wish to gain any of those attributes
He always just gently proves he is the most present person in the room…….
It totally makes sense that you have an affinity for Russell as a charisma coach. He is not the best comedian, but his verbal intelligence is truly a gift very few people have. His conversational wit and vocabulary are really outstanding and something I envy at times too.

Well I don’t know every Brit, but I do know that whilst he can be divisive, there are an AWFUL lot who frickin’ love him. I’m a massive fan of comedy and I’ve seen several comedians live. His “Messiah Complex” was not only one of the funniest and best presented comedies I’ve ever seen (up there with the recent “Sticks and Stones”), it is a cerebral and philosophical masterclass. (With a LOT of swearing and almost embarrasing vulgarity too)

I love how quickly and naturally Charlie breaks down Russel’s charisma. He’s analytical but not in the way that makes people feel like they’re under a microscope. He’s always kind in his expression, I think that is lovely :)

As a Brit 🇬🇧 I always wondered if people in other countries would ‘get’ Russell Brand- glad they do! I saw him in London a few years ago and my stomach was hurting from laughing so much
I’ve heard all my life that many Brits don’t think Americans can get their humor. I wonder where this attitude comes from? Maybe it’s because Brits are fond of making fun of us Yanks. I found that out through visiting London when the tour guides had so many jokes about us - so funny!
I think Ricky Gervais is the funniest man on the planet.
Love "British humor" but hated Russel at first. I've since developed real respect and appreciation for him and his talent.
We love ‘banter’ so making fun of each other. I think the attitude of wondering whether Americans understand our humour as on tv and films the humour is just soooo different. Which I love! I love humour in all forms it comes in.

As a Brit, whenever I see Brand, my stomach hurts from turning so much.
I don't think Brand is the funniest as a stand-up, but I think he is the sharpest and funniest one in live situations.

Please note, he gets a laugh on the third "boom, pregnant" joke because that's when he finally pauses.
If you watch closely the audience laughs on the third one before he pauses - it seems he pauses because the laugh emerged, not vice versa.

Dude Russell has a talent like no other. And very inspiring with his recovery story
One of Russell's strengths (which seems to be something a lot of the great comedians have) is breadth of knowledge. Knowing something about a broad range of topics gives him plenty of opportunity to take a conversation in a different direction - he can make a philosophical point or reference a political event, as an alternative to drawing upon personal life experience or playing with words.

Spot on! Russell's command of vocabulary is exceptional! And that's from understanding the meaning , almost historical at times, and a wonderful delivery application of those words!

Russell is an active listener. He has a variety of responses because he has full command of what he knows and doesn't know in a topic, layered with the patience to listen before responding to a question. People speak with such nuance that when you listen to understand, you give yourself enough time to communicate back both that you understand their perspective and have your own unique view of the target of the inquiry.

@@williammorris6097 Certainly. "I'm not a chef, but I know when my food tastes terrible", "Hmmm. That's an interesting perspective/topic. I don't know much about it. Can you please explain?" Then, when they do, you are able to respond with your own thoughts. You don't need to have written a master's thesis on something to know reality. You don't need a meteorologist degree to know the weather, you don't need a medical degree to know when you're ill, etc. People can read up on subjects and have a working knowledge of things. People can actively listen, and can provide a counterpoint to what was just said. They know bs when they hear it. Active listening is an important skill. Too many people aren't listening. They are waiting for the other person to finish speaking, so that they can have their say/argue their point. They are too busy wanting to be heard, that they don't hear. You can't learn the other person's viewpoint, if you're not actively listening to what they're saying. The thing is, there are experts on the other side of the spectrum who are saying things that people don't want to hear. Yet, they are ignored by the masses, and shut down by the media. How are they any different from the other experts in the field? If someone isn't knowledgeable about a topic, then they don't know enough to say they aren't. Wouldn't it be a bit hypocritical to shut out their voices, simply because you don't like their message? After all, if you don't know anything about the topic, you can't say they're wrong. Don't forget that those who say they have an agenda, have an agenda themselves. I tend to not take weather advice from multimillionaires who fly private jets all over the world, and back to their beachfront mansions with their SUVs parked in their garages. All while being protected by guards armed with *those* weapons. They are the biggest hypocrites of them all.
I may not always agree with Brand,but I appreciate his honesty. And when he has a conversation on a topic he disagrees with, he's very respectful to the person he's debating. He has charisma ora about him that draws you to him. He's adorable.
We just can't get enough of Russel Brand. This guy is the embodiment of charisma.
This is a great analysis of Russell. Usually these kind of appreciation pieces would be done after a person passes on, but having the courage and honesty to do it while he’s alive is very commendable. He really is a talented, unique individual and I think everyone can learn from him.

I love Russell, not afraid to be himself and confident enough in his own moral compass to let it guide him wherever he may go.
I used to be a lot like how he is as a kid in school, I could bring my friends to tears laughing using a lot of the same humor you see here.... and its very addictive because being able to make people laugh like tha,t almost feels like having super power and one that naturally encourages you to develop it further and further...... its really mostly about having a highly creative mind and being able to think well visually...then articulate well the visuals which are often manipulated in your mind to be funny...... which I do believe most people can develop if they put the work in to do so. What most people lack though, is the confidence to do it on live tv or infront of a crowd, there is loads of people just as funny and witty as russell in the world but most don't get the spotlight.

Russell has that supreme confidence that we all have. The difference is we might demonstrate it for a few seconds, then be so amazed at ourself that we lose confidence to continue... Russell has broken past that ‘fear factor’ - he delights in himself and it’s that freedom that is mesmerising to me. I have never seen anyone ‘best him’.

I’m a high schooler and man. These skills have helped me become more confident and comfortable in those environments and I just love using these tactics I learn from you at school and quite frankly it has helped me so much. I had just been watching interviews of him today, he really inspires me to work on my charisma skills. Great video as always, thank you!
When you realize you are not important in this world, and you are just a person, and you choose how you want to walk the earth.
It becomes really easy being totally genuine. In fact it feels amazing to tell everyone anything about you, because in life everyone makes mistakes, and perspective means everything.
Throw yourself out there and people will like you, because they will feel like they dont need to hide every failure from you in order for you to like them.
OMG, I've been doing this since early highschool, and now it's just natural for me! I was so happy watching this and relating to it. What helped was years of basically experimenting from being an extremely socially awkward elementary schooler trying to become more social, and a lot of your videos. I also learned that I have ADHD, so I think that's part of why the lateral thinking came so easily for me. The hard part was expressing that in a way that made sense to others.
But when the guy says "we're running out of time" and Rusell says "no we are not. Time continues" that is not just a semantic joke. He means its a choice, we cant blame time itself if we dont spend it on something. And that is what I like about the way Rusell Brand speaks. He takes the hyperassociative rambling that every adhd-ish person does to the next level: his quick associations are connected to an intrinsic red thread. Not random, not just to be funny, not semantic. So he is able to use his associative brain in a deeper way. (It inspired me to go with the flow of my own brainstorms also more and not to block it but to redirect it and stay in touch with the core of the subject). Im just guessing that since he has to do that with his own brain all his life he now has mastered doing that with other peoples trail of thoughts as well. So he is constantly on 2 levels: you think you hear random associations but he can put things in and out of context quickly and that is what makes it real humor: to put something in another context to show off its core.
I imagined opening up muh own head and taking out my own brain there for a moment.
Not sure if other commenter was being facetious w his reply but when I 1st read your comment & his reply, I immediately thought "I read that comment IN EXACTLY the way I THINK things, rapid fire, almost (always) over thinking something someone else has said or done & yet it made *PERFECT* sense bc I also got the 'red string' ala a murder board type thinking ...bet they hate their brains sometimes too bc sometimes u just need it to stop for minute" then after I read the reply again I over thought it ... were they agreeing, were they being facetious, is that "muh" a purposeful word or just a typo ... and THEN I READ YOUR USER NAME (brilliant btw) ... and face palm *yup they DO think like that too lol & again not sure if commenter gets how many times I'd WISH I could take my brain out & give it a rest *insert over thinking that too* along w wow just realized this post is year old & wow I am feeling way too defensive on the initial users comments ... which all of this leads me to remember a time when my youngest son who IS mentally ill & will need treatment & help for it his entire life around 17/18yrs old once told his therapist of many years that he imagines THE SCARIEST PLACE to go visit would be HIS MOM'S BRAIN (that's me btw) bc at least when he hallucinates he is almost always 99% sure it's not real bc it's so obvious & eventually they go away for awhile, meanwhile I'm stuck living inside my brain 24/7 LOL! I watched russel this week and his subscribers increased by 100,000 each day for the last 4 days. We will hit 6 million soon. Hats off to a man who is as honest as he is funny. He has become a lighting rod for people with a desire to see reality clearly and know what is truth vs. what is a lie. Who knew the audience would be so large on something so simple that we are not getting o our devices.
I have always loved Russell. He IS so funny, articulate, intelligent and is very easy on the eyes. I love his looks, intensity and style. I was glad to find out he had a youtube channel!

I love Russel too, he’s doing really good work in the world, using his fame to talk about addiction, recovery, self care, and exposing the bs in the mainstream media. Thanks for giving my man some props!
I love Russell Brand. I suspect that it's a full-spectrum awareness and presence that he's no doubt cultivated with meditation and his martial art practice (is jiujitsu a martial art?), but also that he was probably always sensitive and aware of his environment in ways that most people are not. Such 'hyper-awareness" may even be what initially lead him to self-medicate as it would be exhausting if one didn't know how to be in the driver's seat with one's emotions. It's been really great watching him lean more into his spiritual self and become such an amazing freedom-loving, life-loving presence.

I met him! He and his entourage came into the cafe/coffee shop I worked at one evening. Time stood still as Russ led the pack to the counter and started specifically asking for a “blue catering band aid”. I do not know what happened but before my coworkers brain turned to mush i made her go to my purse in the locker room and get a band aid i knew i had. I got to thank him for his public veganism and tell him i was a fan!

YES YES YES!! Sterling Archer is one of the best comedy characters of all time, although a lot of his humour is obviously based off other characters, plot, great writing etc.
god's this was good. Your commentary and the wit of Brand just made total sense and when you said around 07:00 how he doubles down and makes a lateral movement to continue the joke. I do this all the time and people often misunderstand why I'm doing it

When talk show hosts interview either person they just sit back and let them run with it, it's like a break for them from work!
With the uninterested when someone is being passive aggressive comment, I have a tendency to stop responding, sit up straight, stare them directly in the eye and have bare minimum responses until they stop. It seems to make people very uncomfortable and they generally retract and begin being less aggressive.
Do you think this is a poor way to handle these situations as you are stating you should become disinterested/distracted? It has always worked out fairly well for me but I tend to put off an overly friendly demeanor in all situations including conflict so perhaps it works well for me because it is unexpected?
I was thinking the same thing! I am also one to pay even more attention and basically challenge people with my body language so as to say "I know what you're doing. Do you really intend on keep going?".
I believe it's got to do with what we feel most comfortable in doing or what kind of "teaser" the person is. The more cowardly type (which I'd say is the most common) with which our tactic works, or the other type that needs this "don't feed the troll" response.
If you watch Robert Downey Jnr in interviews he does exactly that to great effect.
I think both ways work since they are both pattern interrupts.
I come off as being ditzy so people don’t realize I’m keen when they’re being rude so when they say something off putting I pretend I didn’t hear them and ask sorry what was that? 90% of the time they won’t repeat it, they mumble something else and don’t try it again cuz they realize how rude they’re being

I love Russell. Watching and learning from watching his interviews all these years truly helped my shortcomings when talking and being social.
Like genuinely trying to mimic some of the C.O.C lessons on Brand, and then binge watching his interviews really helped me be comfortable in a way no one could help me realize.

The shark joke you praised I felt like she was actually super uncomfortable. He kept talking over her and she said "Why are you trying to diminish my story". Feels like if you acted like that and you weren't Russell Brand people might not take it super well.
It's possible she was offended by the impoliteness at first but was won over by the overwhelming comedy and truth of the situation. She had a social expectation to be given the space to tell her story, but couldn't help laughing when her anecdote was reduced to its essence. By the end of the exchange I think she knew, and didn't take herself so seriously as to be genuinely upset that he overrode her story. I'd be uncomfortable in that I'd know I wasn't as funny or entertaining as Russell, but entertainment is the name of the game. I think, in the name of humour, his impertinence was forgivable. Would anyone get away with that? With less inspired people in a non-entertainment setting, maybe not. Charisma on Command pointed out that it didn't touch her core identity, which is critical. If someone were to be super upset in that situation, I'd say they were insecure and take themselves too seriously. They could have a lot of fun pushing back and saying they were robbed of their story, or challenging the other person to tell a better tale.
