The "shock" value of South Park hasn't ramped and has nothing to do with the sharpness of the show. South Park is a continuing critique of current affairs and sharply parodies our contemporary culture and politics. It does so in a unique and in my eyes brilliant manner. THAT is what makes and keeps it sharp. It's a pity and quite strange that an organization like IGN apparently completely missed South Park's point these passed 20 years...
Yeah that's what I love about the show, its so funny and witty about CURRENT affairs and what is happening at the time of the episode coming our since they make it just 6 days before being aired, that's what makes it so fresh compared to shows like family guy that can't make the episodes as soon as south park and given the latest season of south park was a story that they only had 6 days to progress on and family guy doesn't tell a season over a season. Can't wait for the 2nd game.
They didn't miss it, they talk about that exact point in their podcast series when discussing the game. Their style of writing is just simple and brief so he probably left that detail out by accident
I've played it for about 5 hours so far... Mostly looting, but battles and some quests. As a big South Park fan, and not a big old school RPG style gaming fan, this game turned me over to turn based combat a little more. I agree with the rating, some lag at loading points but still easily a 9/10. I would recommend this game to anyone, especially if they love South Park.
This is one man... Ryan's opinion. I bet there will be plenty of reason to replay the game for any true South Park Fan or for anyone who just wants to see everything in the game. So i sugest you take that part of Ryan's review whit a grain of salt. IGN's reviews sometimes have a element of truth to them. Tough not their strongest side... But i in most cases find that i don't allways agree whit them when it comes to replay value. Games they say have great replay value i don't even want to touch again... one thing I found very frustrating in this game were the mini games where you learn your new fart magic. The instructions are really vague, and they only give you a few seconds to figure out what to do, if you get it wrong, you have to watch the tutorial again instead of just immediatly retrying. Not a huge issue, but quite irritating.

It's a great review because Ryan is reviewing it. He's much more intelligent than your average reviewer. And he's from NJ. People seem to enjoy South Park more in NJ.
This is the first review in a long time that i agreed with. The classes was the only thing i noticed that was wrong with it. Other than that this game is great. Game of the year 2014 :)
I think they let you pick any weapon, regardless of class, is maby because they dont want to enforce that (for example) a mage has to use a staff, like, to be able to mix abilities and weapons.
It's an OK game, from a gameplay stand point but it doesn't work to well, you can heal and attack in the same turn which makes it incredibly easy. I only died twice during the whole game and that was because of the professor chaos glitch. The combat is OK but could have been done better. I found myself just using fire attacks through the whole game and not needing to switch up my tactics even with the bosses. That's another thing, bosses are incredibly lame, each boss I found myself using the same tactics as any other enemy but I only needed to heal a little more often. I played the whole game on hardcore too as it I heard it was too easy. I never laughed once through the whole game which is sad because I do love south park but the characters don't really have banter between each other and tend to just shout and use fart jokes that are aimed to the situation or towards the player. I found myself completing all the side quests looking for stuff that would try and redeem the game from being generally boring which it did end up being. By the time I reached Canada I was pretty damn bored and just wanted to finish the game. Most of the humour is references from earlier episodes but if you watched those episodes then it's just a repeated joke and if you haven't then you won't get it which makes it unfunny either way. Also the summons are more hassle than they're worth because you have to find the NPC just to regain another use and I had over $1000 by the end of the game and nothing to spend it on. I would give this game a 6/10 and I HIGHLY don't suggest anyone picking it up at full price, maybe a weekend rental.
Highly disagree, the game play is pretty well done for its purpose, it didn't suppose to be an outstanding RPG, but a fan service, and one hell of a fan service, it totally worth the price and it plays well throughout the whole game, for those like you who clearly dislike south park(otherwise why would you write this very butt hurt filled comment ?), this isn't a very appealing game, but why would one play it if not fond of south park ?.
Is this game still gonna be fun even if I dont watch south park? (ive only watched like two or three episodes) Like will i understand what goes on most of the game?
***** Thanks for the advice! I'll probably start watching the series again then. I liked the show when I first started watching but i forgot why i stopped lol.
exactly this, excellent reviews. on the PC one of the keys is not the same took me ages to get past but eventually I finished it last night and was super sad that it was over.
***** well I could play the game 100 times and laugh my ass off each time as I love Sth Park so much. The only thing is there is no multiplayer to keep it going for years after. If it did I'd give the game a 10.
zSc0pe While usually i would say that not EVERY game needs multiplayer (as seems to be the stigma right now) I'll bet Matt and Trey could have done some cool shit with turn-based south park multiplayer..
The choice only comes at a specific point in the game and it's very uneventful. In fact the consequence is only relevant to about 20-30 minutes of the game.
IGN have to blast through it, to get it out for review, so obviously it took them so little. but from a fan/gamer prospective, we can spend countless hours on it!
I've only seen about 4 episodes of the show, I don't dislike it but I just generally don't watch much TV, so is this game good enough to stand on its own? I do like turn-based RPGs but do you guys think it's a good enough *game* to appeal to non-watchers?
I was on the edge of buying this for the switch cause its on sale so its fractured but whole, but when you said its similar to paper mario rpg, i instant bought it
Okay, seriously? They must have paid IGN for this rating. Did they talk about the horrible technical issues? How about the bleak and repetitive battle system with horrible fetch quests?
this game was so hilarious and fun, I also realized how they were making fun of rpg games with some of the choices you make, and also how a lot of the choices don't even matter, their just fucking hilarious
Good review, but you're showing fairly late-game content which is kind of spoiler-like. I neither would give this game a solid 9, but rather a 7.5. I say this as a fan of the show. Amusing, fun, but not a master piece.
GameSpot gave a better, more accurate and honest review. The game relies on its excellent attention to detail and presentation in relation to the South Park setting.
I'm also a fan who has watched every episode and the movie and that since the late 90s when South Park was new. However, this game is what I consider 'great' (not just good), but certainly not 'a masterpiece'. For instance, the game lacks a button configuration (which for a left-handed PC player is annoying, since now I have to use my pinkie finger to sprint; well with joy2key I can play with a controller anyway though). Another thing which could be done a little better is add more easter eggs based on how you decide your character to look like, only skin colour alters the game a little (for instance, no ginger comments for playing as a red-haired freckled kid). The major thing that pulled down the score for me, though, is that the European version is heavily censored and only because Germany is the Australia of Europe (so other non-German European have to put up with it also?). Bullshit Ubisoft. I played the US version of course, as do many Europeans. All in all, this is the first South Park game where Matt Stone and Trey Parker played an active role in its development and also the first South Park game that offers us quality.
I don't even like Turn based games, but I really enjoyed this game. Gotta give it to them, they pulled it off.

I would give this game a 6/10 and I HIGHLY don't suggest anyone picking it up at full price, maybe a weekend rental.
daaamn what a long comment
Highly disagree, the game play is pretty well done for its purpose, it didn't suppose to be an outstanding RPG, but a fan service, and one hell of a fan service, it totally worth the price and it plays well throughout the whole game, for those like you who clearly dislike south park(otherwise why would you write this very butt hurt filled comment ?), this isn't a very appealing game, but why would one play it if not fond of south park ?.
Fer Cyccone he said he loved south park? i think it was just an honest review
John Grissom Butthurt reviews and honesty don't hold hands...just like your butthurt comment.
so you would say in short that the game is m'kay?
God that ending flash back to lemmywinks had me rolling
Is this game still gonna be fun even if I dont watch south park? (ive only watched like two or three episodes) Like will i understand what goes on most of the game?
***** Thanks for the advice! I'll probably start watching the series again then. I liked the show when I first started watching but i forgot why i stopped lol.
exactly this, excellent reviews. on the PC one of the keys is not the same took me ages to get past but eventually I finished it last night and was super sad that it was over.
IGN logic
States in review "I won't play the campaign more than once"
gives it 9 out of 10
replay-ability isn't the single determining factor of how good a game is.
Yeah that's one of the reasons it DIDN'T get a 10.
***** well I could play the game 100 times and laugh my ass off each time as I love Sth Park so much. The only thing is there is no multiplayer to keep it going for years after. If it did I'd give the game a 10.
zSc0pe While usually i would say that not EVERY game needs multiplayer (as seems to be the stigma right now) I'll bet Matt and Trey could have done some cool shit with turn-based south park multiplayer..
zSc0pe Your right IMO because if this had online It would be 10/10 but I would give it a 9.5.
Wouldn't there be replay value if you can choose to play as cartmans humans or kyle's elves?
The choice only comes at a specific point in the game and it's very uneventful. In fact the consequence is only relevant to about 20-30 minutes of the game.
for an rpg, 14 hours is WAY too short
Maybe. But for the average southpark fan...this is more than enough and more than enough for me. Then again each person is different.
It's a South Park game...
Most people who played the leaked console versions said they wasted more than 30 hours on it. IGN probably rushed the main quest.
IGN have to blast through it, to get it out for review, so obviously it took them so little. but from a fan/gamer prospective, we can spend countless hours on it!
it's probably like skyrim from gameplay videos i've seen. the main quest line is the shortest part, and the rest you can spend a lot of time on.
I've only seen about 4 episodes of the show, I don't dislike it but I just generally don't watch much TV, so is this game good enough to stand on its own? I do like turn-based RPGs but do you guys think it's a good enough *game* to appeal to non-watchers?
So is this game pretty fun to play? thinking about buying it right now
Yeah it was really fun and had me laughing the whole way. You should get it
for some consoles if you preorder their new game "the fractured but whole" you get this game free
+Mncedisi Ncube u dont even have to pre order. u can get it for free once the game comes out!
I was on the edge of buying this for the switch cause its on sale so its fractured but whole, but when you said its similar to paper mario rpg, i instant bought it
what's up with the music in this review? it's so out of place.
that's in the game if I'm not mistaken...
*****
i don't think so, the music stays the same as the levels/scenes in the review change. it just seems weird to me but maybe i'm the weird one.
I wonder if there will be any big dlc besides character customization
Okay, seriously? They must have paid IGN for this rating. Did they talk about the horrible technical issues? How about the bleak and repetitive battle system with horrible fetch quests?
Well obviously not, compare IGN's review to others, the lowest review was 7/10 xD
bobthemidget98
They didn't talk about anything I noted. Too many fetch quests, frail gameplay and horrible technical issues.
MarrickFait
"The reviewer didn't give the game a score I anticipated. They were paid for the score." Sure thing.
***** Umm... Marrick actually gave good reasons to back up his opinion so dont just insult him.
Mypc4you
Doesn't give him the right to accuse the reviewer of being "paid for the score"
this game was so hilarious and fun, I also realized how they were making fun of rpg games with some of the choices you make, and also how a lot of the choices don't even matter, their just fucking hilarious
This looks so fun.
I was like "wow!" then I saw poop option and I was like "MUST BUY!!!"
made by obsidian. makers of fallout new vegas. dont read. just buy.
This is my favorite game in my library and I still haven't finished it yet
Best game ever!!! Well not the best of all... you know.... You know what i mean!!!
Canada was so halarious and how you meet Phillip and Terrance in Canada and learn Nagasaki.... I fucking died
Good review, but you're showing fairly late-game content which is kind of spoiler-like. I neither would give this game a solid 9, but rather a 7.5. I say this as a fan of the show. Amusing, fun, but not a master piece.
Iv'e watched every episode of south park and thought this game was a master piece.Loved every second of this game.
