  • Are you having a hard time with your vining plants? Trellis are a great way to keep the plants moving the direction you want. We have an inexpensive way to build a trellis. We have used a roll of wire fence, some boards, some screws and some staples. We show you a finished trellis with our vining plants for examples.

Love your video. I'm wondering. Why would you have gotten a bigger sized one? What are the cons of this one?

I found this video trying to figure out how to keep the “ arch in the middle up? See I bought that roll, and drove 6 rebar stacks in the ground… but all the wire up. But it sagged in the middle… I need to figure or find out how to keep it up

      Thanks for your question.
You might do the same thing that you did on the sides to keep the strength. We propped up the middle with a tall board. This trellis had some problems and last for one to two seasons.
Since then, we started using cattle panels that we got from a farm store. Here is a video of how we set this up. Cattle Panel Trellis // Magnolia Street Garden

Hi Audra: great video. I am more interested in your arch trellis. How did your arch trellis work during the season with all of the cucumbers? I knew some people used cattle panels to make arch trellises. I have some rolls of fence similar to yours. I was wondering whether your arch trellis can be used for winter squash? Thanks.

Thank you for your question. We had the smaller lemon cucumbers. Since we had the supports, things were fine. Any thing bigger would create problems with theses trellises which I would not recommend winter squash for these trellis. The cattle panels seem to be a better option to grow winter squash. We used our chain link fence to grow our winter squash last year and we have a video of what that looks like if you are interested.
      Did we answer your questions?

If you could redo your trellis, other than larger squares, what would you have done differently? Was that thin of a guage wire strong enough to support plants growing up and over? Did you have to reinforce and support the arch with pvc pipes, bamboo, or something else? Thank you for your help :)

      Thank you for your question.
We did another video on our next iteration of our trellises. We are now using cattle panels that we got from a farm supply store. We have found that this will support anything that we need from pumpkins to string beans. They cost around $20 and can be anchored to grow boxes which work great. We have when working with trellises it comes down to time, money, space, and strength. This early version was great to experiment with before I made a huge investment in something that was more permanent. Here is the link to our other video to give you an idea of how that looks. ua-cam.com/video/pgNk7LxzEEE/v-deo.html
I hope this helps because Gardening is so much fun. Let me know if this answers your questions.

What gauge wire are you using?

It is Standard Welded Wire Fence that you can get at Lowe’s, Home Depot or Tractor Supply Stores. Peas and green beans work well on this trellis.
I am now using Cattle Panels and it works better for holding up the big items. You might consider doing this instead.
