    Ok that makes sense, good move. I got brave and put holes in my roof for the CB and for the ham radio. I put the CB antenna in the center of the roof for when we travel with the RV and I put the hole for the ham antenna back towards the 3rd brake light. With the permanent mount I got a fantastic ground plane and the performance increase over the magnet was soooo much better it was amazing. From now on, I will always do a permanent mount. I figuered if I paid 54K for the truck, I could drill all the holes in it that I wanted to. If you are still looking for a better install just remember to get a professional mount. I used the commerical fire truck set up (because it came with like 30' of ultra low loss coax , that I could cut after the coax was routed and not come up short).

    I purchased a Performer 5000 back in 2014. I really liked the design and performance. However, after it was mounted on the roof of my pickup with the magnet mount, the chrome plated metal showed severe corrosion. Lots of pitting. I had it replaced under warranty, and the replacement suffered the same corrosion issues as the first around the six month mark. The chrome plated metal (brass) appeared to be "pot metal" . I would be willing to give this antenna another go if it were made from stainless steel. I also had the same results with the Turbo model. I now run a Sirio Twin -Log 5 footer. That one is constructed with stainless steel. I would rather run a steel whip like the Performer or Turbo, but have settled on the fiberglass Twin Log series for now.

    • @Airwaves-Radio
      @Airwaves-Radio  3 роки тому +2

      Jimmy, After reading your post, I went out and removed the locking lever from the base of my antenna, to examine it closely. The threads appear to be stainless steel, not brass. Perhaps Sirio has fixed that issue. I keep my truck under a carport, so it's not out in the elements that much, but I'll keep an eye on it and let you know if I see any pitting in the future.

      That boot just weakens the hold onto the metal. I was barely hitting a limb and knocking it off. Which resulted in a damaged coax. I replaced the coax with some better quality mini 8 at 18ft and got a 1.1 SWR match. Hi Air waves, FYI I have my original Performer 5000 on a modified Sirio Magnet with LMR240 coax, mini-8 double shield (100% foil shield with 98% braid over the foil and 20 yr outer jacket). I keep that for a loaner and I have a President Bill ASC (european export model) to go with it, if someone is traveling with me. The President Bill ASC is about the size of one of those special size packs of cigarettes that holds 25 cigarettes (it is tiny). It doesn't have weather like the US model, but it is capable of FM mode and if you boot it up in I think Dutchland mode, it will do 80 channels, 1-40 is the same as US channels 1-40, then channels 41-80 on the display is 40 channels below channel 1 up to one channel below channel 1. I have a new Turbo 5000 mounted through the roof of my 2017 Silverado.

I did however want to tell you my mag mount came with the vinyl sticker AND a rubber protective boot like most mag pucks come with. I installed it on mine and didnt affect the performance at all. Hi Air Waves, Great Video. Just curious, What area of the country are you in? I knew I was lucky to get 5 miles in congested S. Fl (with a Wilson 1000). I am now easily hitting 15+ in E. Tn with the same Wilson 1000. I am only curious as I am very familiar with both your old and new antennas. And unless you have un obstructed line of site (like mountain top to mountain top) the Radio Shack mag mount is known to NEVER perform, so you are lucky. I am a huge fan of the Sirio 5000. If you are willing to do a test, move the magnet to the roof of your pick up, you will be totally amazed at the increased performance with getting the coil above the roof line. I had a Performer 5000, it was quieter than the Wilson and out performed it also. I just ordered another Sirio, the Turbo 5000 to replace the Wilson with. FYI I have a permanent hole mount on the roof of my truck. I am always running a low power radio with less than 4 watts (but it works) and I was always impressed with the Sirio's, thats why I am getting another one. The only issue I have with the Sirio's is that they do not come with a Static ball or static tip like the Wilson at the top of the whip (I will probably install one). I am an old guy and I also still have a Lafayette Rangemaster ll mobile antenna in use on a magnet mount that I use as a loaner to keep in touch with people I travel with.

The K40 will ALWAYS be the quietest and the best on RX PERIOD! **Note when tuning the K40 ALWAYS keep the whip section 1/8" - 1/4" from bottoming out (there is a spark gap at the bottom that will be very obvious) especially if you are running power. The Sirio Turbo 5000 and the Sirio Performer 5000 will ALWAYS be the second quietest on RX and the Absolut BEST on TX performance period. Although the coil on the Wilson 5000 will handle more power than the Wilson 1000, the Wilson 1000 will ALWAYS outperform the Wilson 5000 on RX and TX PERIOD!! Both the Sirio Turbo 5000 and the Performer 5000 will ALWAYS outperform them all on TX!!!! The jury is out on which fold over option Sirio you will choose. The K40 has a shorter life span due to water eventually getting into the coil. The Wilson's will last much longer than the K40 before water intrusion becomes an issue. There are other antennas that I will give honorable mention to. The Hustler HQ 27 is an AMAZING performing antenna on 40 channels, however it is not very forgiving as far as being very broad banded, same with the Lafayette Rangemaster ll. Have fun finding a vintage Mobile Moonraker or a Lafayette Rangemaster ll, but the HQ27 and the Rangemaster ll are also Amazing top notch performing antennas.

      a 1\2 wave ground plane will have 2 db gain over a 1\4 wave gp and a 5\8 wave will have 3 db gain over a 1\4 wave gp. Sirio doesn't offer any specs on DB gain. Because the coil winding adds to the length of the vertical whip, I'm not sure of the actual electrical length of the antenna, and therefore the actual gain of the antenna.
