Back in 1983 when my father had been diagnosed with inoperable cancer, I made a copy of Ehrmann's "A Prayer" and mailed it to him. A few days later my phone rang. I picked up, said "Hello," and my dad--a WWII vet who rarely showed emotion--said, without any preliminaries, "God bless you." I believe he was touched by the poem's final lines:
_And though age and infirmity overtake me, and I come not within sight of the castle of my dreams, teach me still to be thankful for life, and for time's olden memories that are good and sweet; and may the evening's twilight find me gentle still._

I visited to his statue in Downtown Terre Haute....It is a humble park across from the Hilton Garden Inn where I stayed..it is also right at the point of the famous "Crossroad of America"...I have loved the poem since I heard Lex Baxter's version when I was 11 years old...It is still an inspiration...
