- Опубліковано 29 сер 2024
- Opening in Austin, Texas August 17th
Directed by: Ethan Hawke
Starring: Ben Dickey, Alia Shawkat, Josh Hamilton & Charlie Sexton
BLAZE is inspired by the life of Blaze Foley, the unsung songwriting legend of the Texas outlaw music movement that spawned the likes of Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. The film weaves together three different periods of time, braiding re-imagined versions of Blaze’s past, present and future. The different strands explore his love affair with Sybil Rosen; his last, dark night on earth; and the impact of his songs and his death had on his fans, friends, and foes. The braided storyline terminates in a bittersweet ending that acknowledges Blaze's profound highs and lows, as well as the impressions he made on the people who shared his journey.

One of the Best movies of the Decade, this should have been nominated for an Award, impressively lush cinematography, powerhouse performance from Ben Dickey in the lead role and a great script as well. I give this an A+ in my book and i've now added this on my "Greatest Movie" list. 👍👍
I have been waiting for this forever. His voice isn't as deep as Blaze's but I feel like the heart of the movie is still there. Thank you Ethan for making this film and opening up the world to the wonderful music and life of Blaze Foley. Without you and Mike Judge, hardly anyone would know who this man is. Thank you to Sundance as well for allowing us to finally catch a glimpse into what will be an outlaw's "Walk the Line".
Ty Jordan Check out Duct Tape Messiah. It's a great documentary about Blaze. Google it and you'll find the website where you can watch the movie.
He performed a bunch of the songs on KEXP too, check em out.
To those here being extraordinarily negative about a film they've not even seen, and pissing on the very idea of bringing Blaze's life to film, hey, please how about you all cultivate your own personal obscurity and pursuit thereof?
Blaze Foley was a one-off. Nothing can dilute his music. It is timeless. It should be known throughout the world, period.
If you have a set of soup cans connected with string, and are talking directly to Blaze, as you seem to know his mind, heart, and soul better than he himself ever did, ASK HIM WHY HE BOTHERED TRYING TO GET SONGS RECORDED. ASK HIM WHY HE SUBMITTED TO BEING PHOTOGRAPHED AND VIDEO-RECORDED. ASK HIM WHY HE PERFORMED IN PUBLIC BEFORE STRANGERS. Finally, ask him how he felt when he first learned that Willie or John or Merle covered his songs and that big record deal was inked? Then, kindly ride off into the dusty beyond. Thanks.
Anna Pottier extremely good point and well put ...Im an ol70yrs of tx and yes we lived it with them through which and hard times Calvin Russell was a friend whom I knew simply so Russ lone him my D-28 to do some videos with Blaze and Townes home folks never gave these folks their due hope it's a great success and to all the so called critics...you just wish you could have a.bit of these guys talents ...really y all just feel good ...peace goodness be with you all ....jd
Anna Pottier Ride off in that dusty sunset ....just let things happen it's way over due Ms . Potter rhank you, goodness and peace be with ya always ...70yrs of tx ...jd
Mary Dean I love you, Mary Dean. Thank you for being part of a time and scene that will never come again. Blaze's music - more like a soul set to melody, so true and pure that you can almost touch it - shook me to my core when I first encountered it. Most moving of all is that someone with that much talent never quite finished his journey. He did, but we can only wonder at what might have been. His life story made me look at my own, made me want to keep trying, keep pushing. Peace and goodness to you, Mary Dean.💞
my question is, do you think we're born knowing how to love?
@@JustMyNipples I think maybe we're born ready to know and it fits like a glove if it's given by someone who is ready to pass it on
Blaze and Townes.....2 legends
Even though Blaze is somewhat new to me, Townes is not! I vividly recall seeing him in any number of places, not just "onstage" but hanging out...Houston, Ft. Worth, Austin. (In Colorado now) which has nothing to do with anything except I miss a lot of news from back home!
I lived in all of those places or just outside of. Anyhow, your comment is more than enough!!! Thank you for your straight, to the point comment!
"All of the guitars in this movie were harmed."
Saw this in theaters yesterday. I can’t stop thinking about this film and how true to life it was. I’ve never seen anything like it. I’d never heard of Blaze before and now I’m blown away by his story. Legend.
All except for the Texas accent.
Nails. On. Chalkboard.
Just saw this movie and had the pleasure of hearing Sybil, Ethan and the actors that played Blaze and Townes in the movie speak about their experience making it. So glad to have learned a little bit about him and his story and be introduced to his beautiful music! Thank you, Sybil for sharing your story and Ethan for making this sweet and beautiful film. ❤️
I live in the UK and I'm paying about 70 pounds just to own and be able to watch this DVD as I have to also buy a multi region dvd player. I will possibly be the only person in the UK to own this DVD. How's that for a fan?
You can rent it off youtube for a few bucks
@@weavdogg He may be right, Adam. Anyway, what happened? I'm responding a year after you wrote.
There are British DVDs I've wanted to own but that stupid multi-region thing gets in the way.
Get the blu ray. Blu Ray players aren't as region locked and US and EU are compatible.
That's funny because I bought a region free player so I can order blu rays and DVDs from the UK that are expensive or out of print here in the states.
Just come to NY ♥️
Watched the movie on the plane last night flying from Western Australia to Victoria - had never heard of Blaze Foley before. It was a great movie - well produced and a superb soundtrack. It got me.
Rosie Wildman I also watched it on a plane, from LAX to Honolulu. Had never heard of Blaze Foley, but damn do I know him now. This was a great film.
RIP Blaze Foley (December 18, 1949 - February 1, 1989), aged 39
You will be remembered as a legend.
This film has instantly become one of favorites.
Wow!!! Everybody needs a little Blaze Foley to truly appreciate life. R. I. P. Mr. Foley. I miss you ALOT.
I thought Townes was played poorly and his buddy, even though he sorta favoured him. Ditto for Foley but favoured him less. This was written almost as condensed stabs at deep thought and most people aren't normally so heavy and correct at the same time assuming he was right in his ramblings. I could be missing a fuse, but... this film wants to be bigger than it is. I like Blaze's music.
I didn't think that I'd get to see this film, there are only multiplexes near us in rural north GA. But by happenstance, my wife and I were headed home on my birthday out on the town in Atlanta and a more or less wrong turn took us by an art cinema and it was on the marquee. My wife checked her phone and the next start was in 30 minutes. Thanks, Universe; well worth the ticket, for me anyway.
I love the arts cinema. Glad you got to see it on the big screen
An amazing songwriter. It is time for his light to shine.
when I went to a movie theater and walked in around the middle of this trailer I freaked out and knew it was about blaze. more people should learn about him.
It'll be nice to see Alia Shawkat show her dramatic chops on the big screen.
She was good in Green Room too even if it was [spoilers]
Seems like some of the greatest and most brilliant people has the most tragic stories. I love his music, I resently found him and he really is a hidden gem!
I think this is going to be really good. People should be happy that movies like this can even exist.
I find it really interesting that this biopic shares the title of the biopic about the woman who inspired half of his stage name. Blaze Starr ❤️
******This movie must be amazing. I love these soaked in despair, love and music movies about a musicians which the society failed to call them by their rightful name as Legends.
But really my biggest hope is that one of these days, and i'm prepared to wait for even more years for that, some good director to made a movie about the life and music of the greatest bard with a guitar Townes Van Zandt.
The trailer alone looks better than A Star is Born
Chris having seen both, it is.
39 year old legend......LOVE BLAZE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tales from the tour bus brought me
Try to find Duct Tape Messiah. It's a full length documentary. It used to be free on Vimeo but no longer is. Mike Judge's Tales was great as well but shorter. I loved that whole series.
greg nubody tales from the tour bus is the best thing I’ve seen in a long long time
Been listening to Blaze on and off for a couple of years, but loads more this year and decided to watch this movie tonight. A great film. It's hard to find a really good film these days but this was really well made with good acting and I thought it was a great way to tell the story of the man's career and life.
I never heard of him but really want to see the movie.
'Bout time. Blaze Foley is an American original. The best music never makes it to the radio.
FINALLY get to see this TONIGHT, with a live Q&A with Ethan Hawke!
Same! It was a good time. Great seeing jt in the byrd
I'm very excited about this movie. I know sybill helped with the movie and was there in the early years of deputy and beginnings of blaze... She was not with him the last 10yrs of his life and never ever seen him again after.. I hope it's not all about the love story crap... Much more happened and I hope they capture more than just her story with him.. Either way I am very happy for this!!!
This trailer was so sad that I don't even have any will left to watch the movie...
Moonlight song is my favorite song of his. I love blaze foley. I found him by chance from someone playing Pandora randomly one night. It was clay pigeons and it sounded like a ghost singing to me. From that i got hooked on blaze. Blaze led me to townes and guy clark and John prine. This movie better be damn good 😁 much love.
Hell,i been waitin for this.i disagree with people who want to keep him to themselves.i mean,i get it,but he needs to be appreciated at last as one of the greats.like Townes, like Van Gogh.so many great artists that never get known and appreciated.Jason Molina,Cranford Nix jr.,the list goes on.RIP Big Dog,FatBoy.hope you found them fat cheeseburgers and good french fries.
just watched the film ... didn't know anything about blaze ... I love the movie and now in a fan of the music ... thks Ethan for this gift ...
Does anyone know if there's a link somewhere to watch this online?? Or what about when it's coming to DVD or streaming online? I've been trying for months to find this movie, but no luck. They didn't do a screening in my area and none of the theatres picked it up...sucks.
Tbh I think the movie didn't really get enough publicity of any kind for them to even want to release it on DVD. Just my opinion but my cousin's wife works in tv and movies and that's kind of how it goes.
I decided to watch this on Vudu with my wife based off of the trailer. I'd never heard of Blaze Foley before but the tone of the trailer drew me in. We loved the movie and I'm so happy that his story was shared with us.
You can now rent it on Amazon prime
FREE from showbox you can download it from online
I'm watching it right now!! It's on "The Movie Channel" all week!!!!!!
This made my day
Mine too bro.
I love Blaze Foley's music, and I think that I never can see this beautiful movie in italian version, unfortunately 🙁🙁🙁
Where will this film air? I am from Austin, but away for the next month or so. Will I be able to see it in the SF Bay area?
Really excited to see this. Incredible trailer. Blaze was a beautiful soul
Great movie. I’m very impressed by Ethan Hawke directing and co-writing.
Fuck. I really love listening Blaze Foley's music, I don't want everybody knows who was. But I wish ths film be a masterpiece. It's a trouble for me, a paradox.
You should take some psilocybin mushrooms or some LSD and kill that ego. I get where you're coming from. You feel that the more people who discover his music, the more it becomes diluted by the mainstream. But look at it from another perspective.
It's directed by Ethan Hawke. From the interviews I've seen in which he's been promoting this movie, he seems genuinely passionate about Blaze Foley and his music. The actor playing Blaze seems as though he did a very good job in portraying him. Plus the actor is a real musician himself.
Everything we are is a composite of who we've known and who has inspired us throughout our lives. The same with Blaze, the same with you. People will see this movie, discover Blaze's music, and become inspired by it. I'm sure that's what he wanted. If he truly said he wanted to become a legend, then he has to be more widely known.
I think that's kind of dumb, if you love his music you should spread it and keep him from being forgotten.
thanks for saving me from typing that. cheers
It doesn’t matter how many people know about something. If it’s good it will be good. If it’s bad it will be bad. The perspective of others changes nothing except maybe your own perspective.
Could u edit for a second before posting. Sheesh😏
Anyone know when it's going to be available outside of theatres? I really wanna see this.
Hearing Ethan on NPR made me want to see this.
He died protecting the honor of another man...can't get to much more of a folk hero than that.
my mom is the guy who plays blaze's friend
Amazing! Can't wait for this movie! Love Blaze Foley!
Can’t wait for this, wrote a poem bout blaze few years ago. Might post on my channel soon. L E G E N D
I’m getting Inside Llewyn Davis vibes, but in a warmer, southern way.
Melanie Anne Ahern it’s because they’re about similar musicians of the era. Inside Llewyn Davis is based loosely on the life of Dave Van Ronk. Crazy Heart is loosely based on Townes Van Zandt and Hank Thompson. This is a bio-pic specifically about Blaze Foley
Beautiful. Music seems to be coming around back to MELODY. Missing for so long... And acoustic sound. Digital leaves so much to be desired. Raised on analog and grateful for tubes in the Magnavox, big ole woofers and tweeters. Bring it all back home, Blaze...
Can I watch this online and if so where?
Cinematography is great!
Can't wait to see this. I was wondering if they'd use the Lucinda Williams song about Blaze in the movie or trailer. And they did.
How is it there is a Blaze Foley biopic and not one for Townes Van Zandt
Kings of Leon's song "Reverend" brought me here.
I thought Tom Hardy was in the thumbnail XD
Same. That's why I clicked.
thruaGlassOnion I wonder if Tom's a good singer? I'm dying to know now lol
He can't do anything else, why would be be able to sing~? ;)
I got way too excited haha
I was hoping. If I can only fly would be in the trailer.
steven moreno same, but I got a good feeling it will be played during a great scene.
Where can you find the actual movie?
Quere van i ser this film? His songs really crush tour soul.
this looks amazing. I love films like this. I really wanna see it but too bad its not on VOD & only playing in art house theaters.
Is this available on dvd
This Flick was highly fucking Underrated!
Anyone know when this is out in the uk?
Finally a movie about Charley Daniels.he was a trailblazer! The movie looks pretty accurate on his life.I would know,im his #1 fan.His best song was hands down "Bridge of sighs".
Comedy Gold.
Just watched it! Amazing film!
Where can you find this movie?
Where?
wow post malone starring in a film .ima go see it
I guess this movie had flaws. They all do. Maybe I’ll come back here and tell you which ones I find after watching this gem five or six more times.
He would never steal songs
Why didn't they use Lucinda Williams singing her song "Drunken Angel"? She has an ocean full gravitas in her version.
Where and when can people actually watch this movie?
This is going to be worth seeing!
YES! YES! YES!
Daniel Bryan is that you?
The film was very hard work. Great acting but boy did it need a kick up the backside.Good night
Whats the name of that wedding song in the beginning of this trailer?
Picture card - blaze Foley
Where can i find this movie?

I hate country, but I LOVE Blaze Foley.
The legend
It was an incredibly done movie, only thing is they didn’t do justice for Townes van Zandt with the actor. Made him more of a dick. They need to do a Townes van zandt movie soon like this and have the family approve it with all his friends and people who knew him
It looks amazing..
That song!! At 1:41. Drunken Angel with Alynda Segarra, where can you listen to that?
Not a bad cover but Lucinda Williams voice is the way to go. Especially live.
An Austin TX legend.
I have just watch blaze it was brilliant movie if you watch it you know what I mean
Looks like a life insurance commercial, I'm all for a Blaze movie but that blurry over stylization looks so distracting
Am I the only one that thought that was Ryan Hurst?
Im am soooo fucking excited
Fingers crossed
Is that Townes at 1:30, giving Blaze advice
yep... telling him hed have to die a lil. lol
On the porch scene too I think
What was the first song he played during the video?
Sean Mohlman “Picture Cards Can’t Picture You” written by Blaze Foley.
amazing, this is the real american movie
Who sings that version of Drunken Angel?
Sounds like Hurray For the Riff Raff to me.
it is
Must not be released yet can't find it anywhere.
Lucinda Williams
Should have been Lucinda but wasn’t.
Why was he limping from the polio in certain scenes and not the other.
Love Blaze but bio pics are so cornball....would feel the same if this was about my other favorites... Townes, Prine, or Hag.
Gustavo Herrera One thing sets this biopic apart from the others I find, you could pic out this film to watch without even knowing who Blaze was, whereas the others are directed towards a mainstream audience. That’s what I think anyway. Ethan Hawke talks about how he tried to do something different with this film in an interview somewhere.
♥️Ethan
Let’s gooo boys
Drunken Angel.....
And ill give this guy playing him a fair shot but actually,John C. Reilly is the guy who looks like Blaze.just sayin.
I wonder if the movie will touch on the circumstances of his senseless death. Everyone in the US thinks us Texans are a bunch of back-asswards racists, yet a mostly white Texas jury found a young black man not guilty of killing Blaze. Just another interesting footnote to the Blaze Foley story.
About time. That's true shit !
wtf how the hell i didn't see that
good
Bummer. Thought this was going to be a documentary...not a movie. Oh well...doesn't detract from my enjoyment of learning his songs on the guitar. Personally, I won't be looking to watch this.
xzysyndrome nobody asked bud. let us enjoy it, it was a great film
Charlie sexton...?
Norman Dorough Yes
Why not? He is a legend.
