    Martin, I love your videos! Since you're from Cedar Rapids, my old home town, they bring back lots of good memories. By the way, it looks like they've built new hangers north of PS Air?
    Your install video may have me sold on Avidyne products since any A&P/IA can install them. That would save me several thousand dollars! Thank you and hope to meet you at Oshkosh next year.

      Thanks for the kind feedback! The "new" hangars north of PS Air are about 15 years old; they are the nicest T hangars we have on the field.
      The IFD installation as a replacement of a GNS is really very quick and simple. Just don't forget to add the couple of additional wires for ADS-B "in" and the IFD's audio alerts, to take full advantage of its capabilities.

      Maritn

    Martin, Aren’t those IFDs a blast? I love mine (550 and 440)! One of the features I really enjoy (as you demonstrated) is that you can “couple” the IFDs, i.e. using the 440 as a keypad for entering info into the 550.
    I have used the combo on long XCs to show weather: the 550 on detailed weather ahead along my route and the 440 showing a longer-range view of oncoming echoes.
    And, even though I have the EDM930 engine monitor, I’ll sometimes put the 440 in Fuel Management mode so I can cross-check engine/fuel performance.
    Now... get that digital PFD and you’ll be all set! (OK, -AND the GPS steering (it’s only $$)). I have the Aspen Evolution Pro 1000. A beauteous, awesome combination! ENJOY!!

    Martin, excellent video.
    I have a few questions.
    1. On the 550 IFD UNIT, WHEN IN THE ATTITUDE INDICATOR MODE, DOES IT DISPLAY AIRSPEED AND ALTITUDE?
    2. ATE ALL Garmin mounting hardware are comparable to the AVADYNE UNITS mounting hardware/ports.
    3. What are the cost involved in upgrading softwares and charts from AVADYNE.
    4. What Garmin units mounting hardware are comparable AVADYNE UNITS mounting hardware. ( Plug and play)
    That's all for now.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  3 роки тому

      Hello Ule,
      You will find more detailed answers to all those questions on Avidyne's website, but in short:
      1: It does not display airspeed and (barometric) altitude, only ground speed and GPS altitude. It is not meant to be a replacement for a PFD.
      2/4: The tray and wiring from a Garmin GNS430W can be reused for an IFD440 (plug and play). The same is true for going from a GNS530W to an IFD540 or IFD550. If you want ADS-B traffic and weather on the IFD, or if you want the audio alerts from the IFD to go to the audio panel, those things require the addition of a couple of wires, but no changes to existing wiring.
      3: So far the software upgrades from Avidyne have been free of charge. A dealer may charge to install the software in your airplane, though (so it's between you and the dealer/mechanic).
      Regards,
      Martin

    Nice video Martin. The IFD's will come quickly, I went from a 430W to an IFD440 and I love it! I don't have a 550, so I use the IFD100 app a lot. A lot of pilots that have the 550/540 prefer to use the bluetooth keyboard, can be MUCH easier to do frequency changes and set up approaches when you're in turbulence with the keyboard. Again, play with it in VFR conditions and see what you think.

    Martin, someone may have asked this already but I did not see it in the comment section. What made you choose the Avidyne instruments over the comparable Garmin units?

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  5 років тому +1

      There were a few different factors to consider, Al. And the Garmin GTN units - the only real alternative - aren't bad either, so this wasn't a clear black-and-white decision. Having said that, what made me lean more towards the Avidyne IFDs were three things:
      (1) They were much easier to install in my panel given that I had the necessary racks, wires, and antennas already from the prior 530/430 setup,
      (2) As a company, Avidyne seems to make equipment which is more compatible (compared with Garmin) with other brands than just their own, which should give me more choices for future upgrades, and
      (3) The Avidyne IFD has a full flight management system under the hood, meaning there should not be a complex navigation or guidance tasks ever which it can't handle easily.
      Best regards, Martin

    Martin, great video. Have a fun time at OSH.
    Okay, I don't know, so I'm going to ask. Is the attitude indicator in the IFD550 GPS derived, or is there an actual ADAHRS installed in the unit?
    Next, what Autopilot do you have? Again, I don't know, but I was under the impression that on some autopilots, by leaving them in 'Nav' mode, they would use that for GPS steering commands. Is the Avidyne DFC-90 approved for the Bonanza?
    Looking forward to the JPI EDM930 install, and hopefully lots of video from Air Venture!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  5 років тому

      Thanks, Gary.
      The attitude indicator in the IFD550 has its own AHRS (i.e. solid state accelerometers), so it truly shows attitude and not something derived from GPS position data.
      I have a Century III in my airplane - nothing modern, but it works quite well. GPS Steering would require an additional device between the GPS and the autopilot, like an Aspen, G500, Dynon, or a dedicated GPSS interface. I don't have of those (yet).
      The DFC-90 is approved in Bonanzas, but as far as I know only to replace an installed STEC autopilot. I hear it works very, very well, and I'd LOVE to have one, but I don't know that it's a realistic path for my airplane.

      @@martinpauly As soon as I got done posting my reply, I saw a report in FLYING magazine that as of yesterday, Dynon Certified has received STCs for over 600 aircraft! With the exception of a few airplanes, there is no autopilot certification, but they expect to have the STC for the A36 family later on this year.
      SO, that Glass Panel is closer than it was two days ago, even if you don't use the Dynon Autopilot. I'm sure Dynon will be at Air Venture, I really hope you can work something out with them.

    I enjoyed that video. The Avidynes look to be really cool. Baron Pilot has them, as I am sure you know.
    I have some questions though.
    1. Why don't you have GPSS? That seems to me to be one of the major benefits of a really good GPS.
    2. Isn't it possible to control both Avidynes from an iPad running the IFD app? If so, why have you chosen not to do that.
    3. Since they have bluetooth capability, isn't it possible to load a complete flight plan from ForeFlight to save entering it all i n again?
    It does all look super cool and I'm very jealous! Happy flying.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  5 років тому

      Thanks for your comment. Baron Pilot is a friend of mine; he likes his IFDs a lot and has shown me the equipment before I got mine.
      As far as GPSS goes, what my Bonanza is missing is an EFIS along the lines of an Aspen, G500, Dynon, or even a Sandel HSI. Any of those could add GPSS to my panel, and one of these days I'm going to get it. But one thing at a time...
      I have a lot to learn still with regards to the features and the EFB connection. I use Aerovie these days, and it exchanges flight plan information very well with the IFD (I didn't show that in the video).
      Still lots to learn for me.

      @@martinpauly Thanks for your answers. All the toys are so expensive, it's hard to understand why. After all, a G500 isn't inherently more complicated than an iPad :) Another question occurred to me, When you have 2 GPS units, do they each have to have their own antenna or can they share the same one?

  • @Marauder92V
    @Marauder92V 5 років тому +1

    Thanks for the video. How much of your FIS-B is available on your IFDs? I have a GTN 650 and my Lynx is only able to share the TIS-B portion, no weather. The weather depiction for me isn’t a big deal since I get those on my Aspen 2000 as well as on the Lynx itself. I wonder if any of your viewers have an IFD - Aspen configuration in their plane. My Garmin GTN feeds Nav signal just fine to the Aspens but there are little things like not drawing the full procedure turn on the Aspen that irk me.
    You need to get some CiES fuel senders for that JPI. I am amazed how accurate the CiES fuel senders are. Never have been able to trust my fuel gauges in the 28 years of ownership - until now. Keep those videos coming!

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  5 років тому +1

      All of the ADS-B data from the Lynx (i.e. traffic and weather) can be shown on the IFD. Now, I still need to install the one wire for this RS232 interface (waiting until after Oshkosh to re-open things) before that will happen. Until then, I have just traffic visible through an ARINC 429 interface, and not the good ADS-B traffic but only the diamond symbols with altitudes but without direction, callsigns, etc.
      The installation manuals of both the Lynx and the Avidyne IFD describe how to pair these two devices for ADS-B info ("Capstone"), so I don't expect any trouble here. Garmin is typically a bit more constrained when it comes to interfacing with non-Garmin equipment, which I suspect is the cause of what you are seeing.
      CIES - yes, they make fantastic fuel senders. But I don't have money for them at this time. I left the previous resistive fuel senders in place, and they seem accurate to within a gallon or two. With a good fuel totalizer, that's more than enough for me, though if I ever have to get new fuel senders, the ones from CIES would be very tempting.
      Best regards, Martin

      Martin Pauly You may make me into an IFD convert. Need a few more videos to get me into a deep drooling mode 🤣. The IFDs were still vaporware in 2012 when I had the GTN installed. The integration with my Lynx & Aspens may make me rethink my next upgrade. Do you know if the StormScope (like a WX-500) can be displayed on the IFDs. I do have a dedicated StormScope page on the GTN.

    • @martinpauly
      @martinpauly  5 років тому

      There's a good argument to be made that one GPS/NAV/COM unit is sufficient, especially with the iPad app from Avidyne which basically turns your iPad into a large second IFD screen. Having said that, I like redundancy in case something fails, and the way the two units work together - like for the QWERTY keyboard shown on the second unit when entering data on the first one - is terrific!

      Different people have different thoughts on that. For me, it's driven by the fact that my COM1 (IFD550) antenna is on the bottom of the plane, and my COM2 (IFD440) antenna is on top of the plane.
