  • In this article, we take you to the high plateau in the Bosnian mountains where our team member Vanessa Späth visited and filmed the wild horses living there.
About 2 hours from the Croatian harbour town of Split, the Bosnian wild horses live on a plateau in the mountains. Originally, the Bosnian mountain ponies/horses lived on the Kruzi plateau. In the 1970s, and increasingly during the Kosovo war, Bosnian farmers began to release their working horses. As a result, domestic horses mixed with wild horses and to this day a group of around 800 horses have come together in various herds, living together in a huge herd in an area of 150 square kilometres. Wild horses and domestic horses of different breeds have mixed, resulting in different colours that do not actually occur in nature.
The colts begin to play with each other at an early age, preparing themselves for adulthood. The mares and many other horses in the group do not follow this energetic behaviour of the young stallions. It is no danger to the herd if group members wrestle with each other, as it is part of the natural behaviour of wild horse herds and is regulated. It is not a dispute about hierarchy, but a game that prepares the stallions for their future life and gives them strength.
