  • Thinking about buying a Chinese made still?
May be cheaper but when things go wrong you are left dangling in the wind.

APD Your boiler is a work of art sir!
That dephlegmator looks like one from Oak Stills. (I have one from them.)
I pressure tested mine rite after I received it. It did hold full tap water pressure after bleeding air out for two hours.
In Massachusetts USA we call it a "Wicked Pissah!" :)
    Cheers APD!

      Heya BigEd,
      Thanks for the compliment!
Sold a few kettles in the last few months.
Not sure what brand the condenser was - generic Chinese that gets rebranded later no doubt.
Yes, they definitely had not pretested it before shipping. All my condensers get tested @ 120psi for 30mins.
Good to hear from you! 😊

@@AngryParrotDistillery Dear Sir, If I was in the same country. Two things...
I would purchase anything stainless from you at the drop of a hat.
I would proudly buy you a drink at the bar/pub of your asking without question.
With many a great story to be exchanged...
      Cheers APD!

yes i see what you mean. I bought a still from the usa "i wont mention the company's name " 10 years back, and there is a slight lean in the 2 inch column from the boiler. But yes i see there is some very shitty workmanship there . But it still works ok as it is only slight. Its a 2 piece column and when its all set up if you stand back and look you can see a slight lean. I guess with SS there is no room for error.

      Thanks Nelly.
Got a few more I need to edit together and post.
Yes the way Chinese product has innundated the planet is a massive concern - especially when its done at the expense of local trades and skillsets that evaporate forever.
      Happy Distilling!

@@AngryParrotDistillery Aint that the truth. UK just lost all its steel making and the guys have all retired and cant pass on their knowledge. Now the MOD is wondering where to get its metal from, oh yea, China. Idiots.

Yeah it's a shame, U.K. had SO much national pride tied into steel production, so much knowledge.
Successive governments selling out their ppl to get kickbacks in dealing with cheaper Chinese product over their own countries companies and infra-structure, ... they really are not representing 'the people' who s'posedly elected them ... and yet we all put up with it.
The US Military had the epiphany a few years back with some of their chinese-manufactured coms equipment when some bright cookie noticed some 'redundant' extra chips on circuit boards ... now what exactly are those doing? ... lol.

Gday APD,, i have finished my 50lt keg boiler and column,, its running 2 x 3.5kw elements ,,, question is,, did you put in new electrical curcuits to run your stills?? i live in a rental so can't do that,, i'm thinking i'm gonna have to run each element at 75% thereabouts, on different house circuits as to not overload and pop the breakers. i should have got smaller elements haha

      Heya Ventura,
Yep, you've come up against that wall.
I put 2x 2kW elements into most of my 50L stills for clients unless we establish they have suitable upgraded wiring where they intend to run their still.
Here in NZ we have 240V supply and NZ houses are wired for 10amps with 10amp circuit breakers.
Means that anything more than a 2kW element is going to start overloading things.
I put 2x 2kW elements into the kettles and that way the client can run a lead from sockets on seperate wiring circuits in their garage so as not to trip circuit breakers.
4kW is generally plenty in a 50L still.
To run my 3kW elements in my larger stills I have heavier industrial wiring in the workshop - 15amp setup.
Ideally I'd love to have 3-phase power to play with but that is a ways down the track.
      Happy Distilling!
