Is This the Best Hybrid Ute?? GWM Cannon Alpha is Here!

- Are you looking for the latest ute to hit the Australian market that uniquely has 3.5T towing, hybrid AND is a petrol? Then look no further than the Cannon Alpha from GWM. They were kind enough to give me a test drive, so here are my initial thoughts.

Best upgrade ever would be to allow the car to be trained with the voice of your missus, so you get a proper backseat driver experience ! Jokes aside, that interior is frikking amazing. Thanks for the candid review, appreciated. The other manufacturers need to take care of their customers - and pricing !
Before this, luxury, Ute and affordable never apear in the same sentence.
The next cheapest ute/pickup that has the same features as the Alpha is 185K with the F150 platinum
They will be priced from 51k to 65k depending on what you want. 🔥🤘
You couldn’t see the big camera in the a pillar lol
But u can turn camera off
I thought you'd be more keen on the 400 than the 700, Dash. I'm hoping the 400 comes to Aus.
Good drive through Comaidai?
Road noise sounds decent
I’ll be interested in their warranty and how it plays out as it may have a good warranty but how picky are they when you claim
I've had to make a warranty claim on my cannon and they asked 0 questions, had an issue and they booked it in. Cars 3 years old now and done a decent amount of offroading. Depends on your dealer more than the manufacturer.
Can you drive 4wd on sealed roads?
You will definitely want to bring out a GVM Upgrade as the carrying capacity is woeful but shit I want one even so.
140kg lower then current hilux and even lower than the Ranger
It's the same payload as a rugged X Hilux.
Dave if you start producing accessories for these I’d consider buying the diesel one.
Why diesel over hybrid ?
@@kromey111 that is the thought at the moment till I get my head around the hybrid system especially while towing.
I would love to see someone do a tow video with the Alpha or 500 so I can see how it performs.
@@MRCtouring diesel not that good compared to its peers. Especially weighing an extra 300kg
@@kromey111 I truly would love a V6 Ranger but struggling with handing over that much coin for something that is overpriced.
It is an awesome vehicle but still overpriced.
BYD just release the new seal 06 which has new hybrid tech with 2000km range one tank(65L) fuel. And the price is less than $30k AUD.
This guy is a GWM guy. He won’t be reviewing cars of other brands.
@@lluow shame because they BYD is a different type of beast that needs someone like Dave to give it a real review.
They are the same, they just joined together, 2 brothers, 2 different concept of cars, but they decided to joined together, but still marketing individually!
2409KM
it's a shame they have downgraded the rear suspension from coil in the original China market to leaf
Yes agreed, a 5 link coil rear would have been 👌
How are the rear seats i hear they recline. Hows the legroom?
I've been in one and I am 173cm and the legroom is fantastic. The cab is SUV sized
If nissan don't get it right with the next gen nav and y63 they might disappear as the competition ramps up. . . . . Unfortunately
If the nav is anything to go of by with the new triton that it's based in, it will be a major flop
@@LVNITUPM8they don’t listen to their techs who are the front line with their products
Hey david what is the fuel economy like?
🤣😅
Just because it's LEGAL to tow 3.5t with it, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
75% of the laden mass of the tow vehicle, is a good rule of thumb for a pig trailer maximum ATM.
I'd guess that the GVM of that ute might be around 3,300kg....so I'd be imposing a towing limit of about 2.5t if I owned it....which is not likely to happen.
I DO tow a 3.5t caravan....with a 5171kg Chevy Silverado. That's a good vehicle to trailer ratio.
Agreed, theres no vehicle that can tow it's max capacity. It's a "max capacity" for a reason. The reason the US trucks can comfortably tow 4.5T is because they're actually able to pull around 6T they're capped in Australia. The F150 has a braked tow capacity of 4.5T here in Aus but in the USA it's 14,000lbs or 6.3T
Sounds like a wonderful vehicle, consistently watching you, distracting you from driving.
Most Ranger V6 are bought for towing and cruising with off-road capability.
From the quick review you did, seems to be a dressed up recycled fruit tin with micro management issues.
Don’t think it has the power for 3T up 10% grade, even hybrids run out after 15minutes up grade. Very bad for hills and grads.
not the 1st ute which is twin locked, look @ cannon XSR
Also ranger raptor and gladiator rubicon so long way from first
So is the suspension as bad as other reviewers have said or are they just trying to nit pick and make it sound worse than it is
Who keeps suspension standard ?
Gees, surprised you had to ask.
The very first thing I noticed is Dave continuously being jolted around in his seat, like watch again, it's just continuous.
That just confirms it ordinary out of the box, even Dave addressed it in his summarisation.
It's a great ute, hopefully suspension tune / development comes in successive models.
It's about the same as any leaf sprung ute.
Is it coming to oz in the V6 petrol.
No, just 2.4 Diesel and 2L turbo Hybrid.
@@EleMexican typical, China gets the V6 while we get screwed.
Jeep gladiator twin locked and petrol!
Ram trx
@@mattandersen7133 or that lol
VW have a petrol option far to expensive
Cheers, David. For me jury is still out on Chinese vehicles. They tend to mess around with the raw materials on a lot of products. Carbon in steel, the grade of aluminium, and so forth.
Ford worried lol, ranger plutonium
Your comment reminds me, Elon Mask, about BYD.
Um raptor is petrol
You've gotta take these sponsored reviews with a grain of salt.
As is Amarok Pan-Americana and Jeep Gladiator
The problem is resale you get nothing for Chinese Ute's if you want to sell it in a few years if you want to upgrade or need cash etc. Like an LDV that's 2 years old with low kms will lose almost half its value. Great savings upfront but you lose that when you go to sell in the second hand market.
A counter argument is that you're saving $20k+ upfront compared with a ranger or hilux for example, so possibly loosing $20k at the other end doesn't matter. And with a 7 year unlimited km warranty, 7 year capped price servicing, and 7 year free roadside assist... You can be sure the value is there for at least the first 7 years.
If you're only buying a car for resale value, then you better not buy a car and buy a bus ticket instead. No one buys a car and not drive it, cars are to be driven and not an investment.
@@joshs674 Thats a valid point. A lot of people don't drive the car til it dies.
I don't give a shit about Resale, drive it for 7 years, sell it for 30K then get the next model.
I don't think Ford will be worried.
Not now but they will in a few years
What’s with GWM and their ugly emblems they put on their vehicles. Just taking that circle thing off the front and back would make it look so much better!
Thats like telling VW to take the VW badges off the Amarok. the P series logo is on the P series trucks because surprise, it's a P series.
@@EleMexican my point still stands. It's a big ugly thing in the middle of the grill. They could still have it but not make it such an eyesore (in my opinion). The Tank 300 has a big rectangle logo in the middle of the grill which I don't like either. I've seen people mod the grill to something different and it looks so much nicer. For example, some just have the word "TANK" written across the grill. It's still branding but done much better.
Turning Chinese turning Chinese
Fair go mate
Never trust a reviewer who’s getting paid from that company to do a review
Who’s getting paid 🤷♂️
He wasn’t paid
That would CarExpert...gets paid by Ford.
Not paid just free food and accomodation.
That talking crap would drive me mad.
U can turn it off
Sorry, will not buy a vehicle that wants to tell me how to drive
Aust Gov has set these requirements to attain 5 star safety rating. Manufacturers must comply to get the 5 stars. I feel the same as you, but no choice except to either not buy or turn them off.
you wont be buying a new vehicle beyond 2025 probably.. ANCAP have set the requirements, car manufacturers follow
Who asked?😂
I have a wife for that 😂
LoL... You are not gonna buy a new vehicle.
Probably the worst reviewer I've seen in a long time.
Be sure to let me know when they out sell Hilux or Ranger , Why do you flog this crap. Sponsored rubbish seems you'll plug anything for a freebie
You do know who is car sales and cars guide and probably 10 other media outs, are sponsored by to tell sheep what’s best. Toyota 1, huge media budgets to all the big media outlets.
@@paulmcintosh5589 You going to try and tell its as good as a Hilux ? I will take anyone's bet that it NEVER outsells the Hilux or Ranger . Lets see how confident all the Yappers are ? Bet no one takes up my offer. Just like the Tank piece of junk how many do you see on the road or towing or traveling aus? Besides people flogging it for there business you see NONE .
