To preface, I am a chef and have worked in the hospitality industry for over 10 years. Chang trademarking "chili crunch" is equivalent to Olive Garden trademarking "alfredo" and going after the small italian restaurant in your hometown, or if Taco Bell tried to trademark "quesadilla" and went after the food truck that has a mile long line in downtown LA. Being able to corner the market on a product like a chili crunch would 100% stifle innovation because it would only allow one product to exist. It's absolutely insane how this was allowed to go through.

As an Aussie, there’s a lot of dangerous stuff in Australia that can be devastating if you don’t know how to handle it. The ocean here is one of those things.
The dad had a lapse in judgment, he made a mistake, but did the right thing when things went south. I think he deserves a bit of grace.
Absolutely, I've seen people underestimate our oceans, especially the calm looking ones, countless times. In this case (obviously not calm) there could easily have been sometime between harsh waves lulling him into false sense of security and wanting to enjoy that crazy mother nature force with his daughter. My parents exposed us to similar but not with such terrifying consequences. Though I did fall over a waterfall once and my Dad had to do a similar dive to save me. I was actually no where near the danger spot when it happened 😂

I think nowhere is the fact people underestimate/don’t understand the ocean more notable than Bondi Rescue. Even confident swimmers from other countries get caught out by the force of our ocean.

As an Australian I grew up wearing ugg boots. The term ugg boots meant boots made of sheeps skin. We can't use that any more because an American company decided to trademark it. I'll let you guess which one

OMG! That's what I knew them as and when that company came along, I was so confused. But as an American, it was hard for me to explain. No one else knew that was a thing around me. It was something my stepdad (or as I always called him, dad) used growing up. He grew up in upstate New York but outdoor rain boots were Wellies and his sheepskin winter boots were his uggs.

As a musician, limiting the range of tempos you can use and ordering artists to rewrite songs to fit under the auspices of "better fitting our culture/mentality" is such a bizarre move. Tempo alone doesn't necessarily determine the feel of a song, and there are plenty of up-tempo songs with mellow vibes because it's all in how you actually write the piece. In fact, you can often do things like "rewriting" a song by simply changing the time signature without really changing anything (except how you count in, maybe). A music scholar might argue the time signature doesn't fit the piece but so long as on paper it's within the range specified, it fits the letter of the law.
I'd be interested in how many traditional or classical Chechnyan songs will technically be banned by this move.
For the guy facing the death penalty I 100% agree with the statement about rehabilitation meaning nothing if we are still going to put down those who have been rehabilitated. No I don’t think he should be free as his sobriety could be challenged and he could repeat/ I don’t believe he deserves a normal life again.
I think the fact that he agrees that he still deserves to be behind bars says a lot. He doesn't ask to be freed he asks to not be killed.
I think murder is just one of those crimes that you shouldn't be allowed to be rehabilitated from. His victims were murdered in cold blood and their loved ones will have to live the rest of their lives without them.

That dad was neither a bad dad or a good dad. He is just _a_ dad who learned an _extremely_ valuable lesson that unfortunately the world witnessed at the front row seat.

People can - and have - been murdered over paternity test results. Just the fact that higher-ups even LET this happen in the first place is vile, yet unfortunately it’s not surprising. Like you said, how many lives have been destroyed or snuffed out because of a faulty result? How many people are they responsible for ruining?

That would look like the woman repaying all child support, plus reimbursement for other hardships such as emotional and non child support related monetary expenses.
if the woman did not knowingly misrepresent the parentage of the child and instead relied on a faulty test, the test make should be held liable for all the above damages.

As a first responder who works and responds to rescue calls at the beach, this happens all too often and most of the time the child and even parent/ family member do not make it.
You say they usually "don't make it"... But in what country may I ask.... I'd be really surprised if that was here in Australia, cuz that crap happens all the time - Pretty much all kids who grow up on the coast are EXTREMELY strong swimmers, learning to swim since being babies, learning about swells/tides/rips/surf conditions etc in primary school... & We have soooo many lifeguards/eyeballs watching problem zones etc... The sea for most kids out here is our second home.... I'm guessing thats why the wife put such an emphasis on her husbands idiocy... He was either a tourist, or just being stupid (people who grew up here tend to know better when it comes to safety & those areas - Notice how that jetty was otherwise empty except for him/his daughter.... Thats North Wollongong lighthouse, its busy AF, never empty unless for good reason) ❤
Of course bad things can happen... But any rescues etc that need to be made out here are almost ALWAYS tourists (I mean just look at a show like Bondi Rescue etc)...

In Sweden, several grocery stores are doing indoor farming as well (herbs and lettuce). So the energy that is used to keep the store at a comfortable temperature for customers also helps the plants.

regarding the david chang situation - as someone who's also korean, i always thought of chili crunch/crisp as more of a chinese thing?? so the fact that momofuku (which is a japanese word btw) would try to trademark something they shouldn't claim from a cultural standpoint somehow feels even more disrespectful. it's not like there's any shortage of options in korean cuisine david chang could've chosen to hone in on, but who knows, maybe capitalizing from aspects of other asian cultures is the guy's thing 💀

Man, that solar eclipse was something. I live in Canada. We had a full three minutes…. I’ve never had a physical reaction like that to anything in my life. It was just so surreal. And to experience that with my kids was amazing. Even my daughter, who is very calm and reserved, she’s grown now, started yelling and jumping up and down. Never seen her have a reaction like that in my life. She was actually a little embarrassed afterwards. She said I don’t know what just came over me. I just looked at her and smiled, and said I’ve never had this feeling before either. It was just amazing.
My head and body felt strange, almost like my whole body and brain were 'buzzing'. It was absolutely incredible, something I'll never forget! I'm happy so many people were able to watch it. :)
I started shaking like a leaf right before totality. I was in a parking lot with a bunch of other people, and everyone was cheering and screaming and booing the clouds. The forecast said it would be fully cloudy but the sun was completely clear for the whole totality. I've never felt anything like it in my life.

Having worked for an indoor farming company that went under, greenhouses are infinitely more efficient and less damaging than vertical farming. However, construction is a forgotten environmental cost as construction resources and methods haven’t caught up to be environmentally friendly or sustainable. The other big obstacle we dealt with was the TINY profit margins produce has. Until there’s heavier government or investor backing, indoor farming will be difficult to really get off the ground.
I would say that there is absolutely nothing the internet could say to that dad that he hasn’t already told himself. That’s a terrifying experience.

on the Viaguard story, I know someone affected by this a classmate of mine in college and after looking into it (she was also interviewed by CBC) she had 2 options of who the father could be and they got it wrong. She filmed the pregnancy for a documentary project we had and now knowing everything that was going on from school work, filming her doc, and all this shit and then dealing with covid right after, she has to be one of the strongest people I know
Aussie dad learned a hard lesson and won't soon forget it. There is no need to pile more guilt on him than he's already feeling and will feel for the rest of his life. I know my brain would constantly be replaying that moment every few seconds.

The dad was absolutely in the wrong for having his child out on there during such bad weather. But, I don’t think he needs anymore people piling onto him. He got the worst case scenario with the best case ending, I doubt he’ll ever let her near the water when the water is even choppy now.
Even with kids now a days, it seems like people refuse to let people learn from their mistakes. One mistake defines you. Everyone makes mistakes and can grow as a person, even adults.

Vertical farming is such an amazing idea as Philip laid out. But the best way we can utilise it, is if we used renewable energy for those farms. A mix of solar panels and wind turbines could alleviate the energy needed to grow the crops, but also tidal energy if the farms were on or near the coast.

I think the criticism comes from the fact that he’s doing TDS in an election year and seems to say more bad things about Biden than our potential dictator, and rich people don’t really need to worry about another Trump presidency. If anything, that’s what they all want.
For the Australian dad I feel for him, sometimes we make dumb mistakes. I'm a single parent of twins. One day I loaded my kids into their car seats and forgot to buckle one of them because I was distracted. We made it home safely, but when I saw what happened I broke down crying. It sucks to make that kind of mistake. Glad it didn't wind up worse
Really appreciate the show's continued commitment to a large variety of stories related to current affairs. I never click on a PDF video quite expecting to hear about the legal shenanigans of David Chang and chili crisp or a deep dive into indoor vertical farming but it's always well-researched and interesting stuff.
Being in the path of totality absolutely made a difference. I remembered to put an alarm on my phone so I wouldn't miss is. Thing went from "Oh cool, I can see the moon's shadow on the sun through the glasses. Neat," to "The only thing left of the sun is a ring of light surrounding an immense void. My mortal eyes feel blessed by witnessing such beauty."

Im from Finland, my only eclipse was in early 90s, as I was maybe 13. It happened in the wee hours, like 5am, but me & my bestie powered thru. We lied on our skateboards at a science centers parking lot, with our old timy welding goggles and watched in awe, while the mozzies had a buffet on us. The wildlife going silent all at once made an impact! I had to go to work just few hours later, one Sunday shift I wont forget, but worth it.

As an Australian I'm torn. We literally get taught water safety in school. Many public and private schools teach water safety around beaches and rivers; like survival strokes, knowing high vs low tide, how to spot a rip and how to generally not allow children near 5m high waves crashing onto a cliff face....
It's literally illegal in most states to have a pool without a fence with child-proof gate. We are so aware of environmental dangers because there's always a flood somewhere and if there isn't... there's a bushfire.

I don’t know if it’s just me or not but I’ve been loving the creativity and delivery of the ‘Sponsor’ section of the videos lately. Trying to guess which of the show's amazing sponsors have helped with each show based on the first sentence of Phil’s set-up has become a little mini-game of its own for me. Indoor farming is something I can't WAIT to be more effective once our energy sources start to shift more towards renewable energy including hopefully fusion reaction. The amount of deforestation stemming from wanting to grow JUST soy is insane to me and any way to keep rainforests or land in general as raw nature is a huge step forward, which means space efficient farms like indoor vertical farms are absolutely crucial.
The story of the man on death row is eerily similar to my own father. It's really strange growing up with the knowledge that your parent is a murderer, but literally everyone I've ever met who knew him before the crime and who knows him behind bars (including the security guards and wardens!) have nothing but good things to say about him. I'd be going through the security area on visitation day and the guards would be gruff with me, like they are with everyone, until I got to the station where I gave the name of the inmate I was visiting and their entire demeanor immediately changed for the positive. They'd be like "Oh my lawd, you're Johnny's daughter?! You're dad is the nicest guy we've ever met."
And yet he's in prison for murdering someone while on a drug-fueled manic episode of his then-untreared bipolar disorder. He used the mental illness and drugs as a defense in his trial but was still convicted of 1st degree murder. Sentenced to 40 years. He's finally going up for parole this year for good time and I am hopeful. Like the guy in the story, he's had a very highly trusted job for most of his time behind bars, including having unmonitored access to tons of sharp, expensive equipment and serving as an EMT/firefighter for the prison complex and surrounding area. He's literally saved lives while behind bars. If that's not rehabilitation, then idk what is.
I can relate though on a MUCH smaller scale. My dad is an addict, but my family (moms) always had nothing but great things to say about him as a person (outside of addiction). And he is great; 90% of the time. We stopped talking for about 5 years, and during that time my mom mentioned that he kicked her in the face… I was stunned. He is not a violent person in any sense of the word. He’s a goofball, and flighty. I can’t even imagine him doing something like that.
So before I started talking to him again, I had serious conversations with my mom and grandma to understand *him*. And they both said (my grandma didn’t know about it either) he was never violent. My mom explained he was just not himself, had come home after a days long bender and it was a drug fueled rage. She said he is not a violent or dangerous person. That’s the key comparison. Drug induced rage/psychosis can make you act unlike yourself and do things you wouldn’t normally do.
Idk I was watching this and had a difficult time being sympathetic since I’ve personally know Mexicans and black men put on death row for this all the time but now it’s a white man it’s ok? We can’t just look at this as drugs and murder but left a little girl parentheses and to stumble upon them himself

Well it's not just men thought they were the father and they weren't. Sometimes they were the father and the DNA test came back that they weren't. Marriages have been destroyed. Some of these kids are in their twenties. And the man who badmothed them their entire life turns out to be their father. I mean, how do you get over that. An entire lifetime waste it.

I’m coming from the perspective of someone who forages and scales sea cliffs on the pacific coast (foraging and fishing), I’ve done it for years and can read the ocean very well. And I still would never bring my child that close to the water (even on a Jetty) if the waves were crashing that hard. Some of my closest calls were actually on structures similar to what they’re walking and not on cliff faces that I’m barely gripping onto. It creates a false sense of safety being on concrete. Maybe he isn’t informed, idk, but this is a good lesson to everyone that nature will do what it wants to do. Man made structures don’t protect you against the ocean. People die every year because of just rogue waves and king tides.
The fun part about agriculture is that crops are extremely different. We see different growing methods/systems having varying impacts based on crop type. Some crops under ideal circumstances do well in an organic production system, other crops grown under organic production see an enormous reduction in yields and therefore have larger emissions per unit of crop and in many cases even have more pesticides applied due to ineffective plant protection products (don't worry they are natural pesticides that kill things with love). It is almost as if there is no silver bullet for something as complex as agriculture, and maybe we need to reconsider our black and white approach to finding solutions for a sustainable future.
The first story was just a retelling of the last two years of my life. I have a three year old currently. A few months after she was born my gf was pregnant again, we were having sex again but I was always careful after the first kid. But the test came back as mine. So I believed it for the whole pregnancy till I saw her face and I knew she wasn't mine. I spiraled into a depression. The real dad at the time wasn't ready for a child so I stepped up to be her dad though I knew she wasn't mine. 6 months later he comes back and says he's ready. And I had to let him take my daughter from me. The depression at first was horrible. I wasn't with the mom after he came back for her because it put a splinter in the relationship. So I went from having a family to sleeping alone next to an empty crib. My heart was empty
Edit: ide like to say, I do have joint custody over my lovely girl, just not her sister. It was hard getting it in the beginning and getting used to not seeing her everyday was a challenge but were doing great and she's definitely a daddy's girl 😎🤙

Living in Tasmania Australia a farming state which 100% relies on renewable energy so vertical indoor farming could be a great solution for us, however it means we would need to bolster our energy production by adding more wind turbines or using another hydro dam, to give you an idea of how renewable energy is important to us here a lot of the older folk refer to power companies as hydro

David Chang pulled the ole "pull the ladder up behind you". He made his money and name and now he's desperate to prevent others from making money in the same space because then there would be less for him.
The crazy thing is that there actually wouldn't be less for him. He made his way in an already existing market. He's going after others because if he succeeds there would be more for him, but now that he's being called out for his greed he is probably going to lose what he wasn't at risk of losing in the first place.

The Missouri story reminded me of Sunday’s Last Week Tonight. Oliver covered how long and painful lethal injection has become: at least tens of minutes, but potentially hours. Much of it could be in extreme pain, including a sensation of drowning. Add in the issues finding veins that were mentioned and it sails past barbaric and even monstrous.
I remember reading something somewhere about a condemned person sent to the guillotine that asked a spectator to count the seconds they were able to blink in an effort to estimate how long a human head can survive after separation from its body. The answer was seconds.
All this to say that I believe I would prefer the guillotine at this point. Lethal injection was supposed to be humane and painless, but we’ve somehow managed to end up with a procedure that’s more like the brazen bull.

A moment of foolishness is not a moral failing. It's unfortunate that the dad didn't realize the danger and put his kid in that position, but when the danger became apparent he threw himself into saving his child with what really seems like no regard for his own safety compared to hers. He certainly needs to learn, but good on him for doing exactly the right thing when shit got real.

As someone who works in indigenous food sovereignty I see (and use) indoor farms to supplement our no-till, multi species, ecologically stable food forest adjacent to wetlands. There is simply just not enough fresh food available in the places needed when it’s needed, and when used in combination with intentional use of sustainable energies can be extremely beneficial.
This "issue" of indoor farming using a lot of energy, is energy problem not exclusive to farming. Literally indoor farming is miles better if we transitioned to better energy sources, but instead of doing that they're trying to blame the farm.

With the water rescue story, as an Australian I've seen countless news stories where that exact same situation goes the other way and ends with fatalities. Time and time again we try to warn people that water does not fuck around but sadly people don't seem to get the message. Whilst I'm glad this ended well it could just as easily have been a preventable tragedy.
Here in the Texas panhandle we have been trying to encourage the use of wind energy. We have sooooo many windmills around here and now we have data storage facilities taking advantage of it. Oil is still king here, but I hope we can transition
Hey Phil, I'm an Environmental Technologist. On the indoor farming topic, while the industry is new, and absolutely does have issues. It is absolutely better for the plant if we move away from traditional farming. By pushing down the cost of produce we can reduce the insensitive to cut down forests to plant crops. By investing in this now, we can save emissions as soon as we transition away from fossil fuels

Imo about the indoor farming is that they can actually minimize the energy use for lighting if they apply some sort of reflective material on their ceilings, maximizing the light exposure to the plant, like a mirror. Other than that, they could also try to "bring in the sunlight" into the building using some sort of "adaptive mirror" similar to some of those solar energy farm. They can install it on top of the building or even next to the window, on the side of the wall.💭💡

As someone who used to be sympathetic to the death penalty, I've grown to be against it. The justice system is imperfect for a variety of reasons and cannot be relied upon to issue a verdict with as much finality as the death penalty. There is no coming back after the person is dead. And going further, even in cases such as those of Brian Dorsey were guilt isn't in doubt, I don't feel comfortable with giving the State the power to end a person's life. It's barbaric. We must do better.
I'd argue it should be used extremely sparingly. Rarest of the rare cases, as it were.
The US is in the same club as China, Iran, and KSA when it comes to the death penalty. It's not something to be proud of.

Someone wrongfully imprisoned can still receive exoneration decades later through new evidence. Phil has featured several stories over the years of people gaining freedom after being in prison for a long time. I'd love to have a discussion around the justice system: the myriad of ways in which people are wrongfully convicted and receive unfair, often uneven punishments; how the penal system in the United States exploits prisoners and perpetuates modern day legal slavery; or how our system is designed for punishment, rather than rehabilitation.
I felt bad for the guy then I remembered that he murdered a loving couple and left a child without her parents over crack, he didn't need to kill them to feed his addicition, plenty of other ways he could of scored but he chose that. he wasn't put it prison for rehabilitation, it was there pending execution, which in my opinion took way to long, 20 years this had to have given him hope, which is sorted fucked up in its own way, but when he confesed to the crime 20 years ago, just get it over and done with

Dorsey, unfortunately, deserves his fate. The fact he used bleach to try to cover it up makes it much worse. You can have 100s of people writing that "he's reformed" or "he's harmless now," yet we forget the 100s of lives that he affected with his crime(s).
Prison is supposed to reform people. Its not a tool for retribution. Its a place to remove someone for society until they are reformed to the point of being able to rejoin it. Dorsey clearly is. He clearly understands the weight of his crimes, and has turned himself into an upstanding citizen. Not only that, capital punishment is simply wrong. We are the ONLY first world country to still employ it. Hell, Russia technically banned it (tho they don’t really respect that)
You don't understand the point of jail. Its not surprising but its kind of stupid. Prison is the alternative to gallows. Mostly because we have actually seen that we get it wrong a lot of the time. Not most, but a lot. There are loads of people who have been put to death or spent 20+ years in prison that we now know for a FACT were not guilty. People like you stop thinking the moment you think you have a solution. Prison is meant to be a place to hold someone outside of society. At the same time, their behavior is reformed to become a useful member of society and to avoid just mass murdering anyone who we think committed a crime.
We use the term "Witchtrial" too much these days but those were a real thing where if you were accused or suspected of a crime you were just killed. In fact oddly enough in the Salem case, those who confessed to being witches were actually the ones NOT killed, just those who kept proclaiming their innocence (as several of the accused witches were just in prison for years till the governor pardoned them after the fervor stopped).

I am a criminal justice student and oddly enough we are discussing the death penalty as a punishment. Key word we are always told is the word “depends” as it really does depend on the case. While what he did was absolutely deplorable and horrible, the idea that they may have to cut around to find a vein without anesthesia or seemingly a numbing agent just baffles me. Lethal injection is meant to be a more “humane” method of execution yet how is it humane to dig around to find a vein to kill someone without proper medication? It almost feels like a violation of his eighth amendment right which protects from cruel and unusual punishment. Again I am just a student and do not have all the legal knowledge yet that particular part disturbed me. The image alone trying to find a vein just seems horrifying.

They don't have to do anything without anesthesia. They _get_ to. And I don't mean that specific to this person. The _only_ reason there isn't a policy or actual law in place requiring anesthetic for the procedure is because they want the option to _not_ use it and legally torture whoever is about to get executed, depending on how they feel about them. I was a phlebotomist for years, four of which were spent at the Red Cross with the _big_ needles - it's not that hard to find a vein.
Digging around for a vein isn't cruel or unusual punishment. I have small veins, and it is REALLY hard to draw my blood yet, I still have to sit through the prodding to get my blood drawn for testing. Is that cruel and unusual? No. It's just something I live with. I am also a lifelong addict, 7 years sober. Yes, part of the reason for it being hard to find my veins was my addiction. I was hooked on heroin, never hurt a single person. Addiction should not let someone off their sentence. I believe in rehabilitation, BEFORE someone commits a violent crime. Not after. I don't even agree with capital punishment, but my addictions wouldn't be a valid excuse to get me off of the punishment were I in that situation. Especially, if my crime were against someone helping me and that crime left their kid an orphan. Sorry, not sorry. As an addict, I very much believe in personal responsibility. No, it's not easy to get sober, but it is easy not to kill people, End of story! UA-cam will probably delete this because I discuss sensitive topics, and I am in trouble for bullying flat earthers.
Exactly this - if we're hellbent on doing it, then do it right, starting with making sure the prisoner is well-hydrated for days prior. I'm a healthcare provider, primary specialty emergency/trauma, and anyone at any level of practice - medic, nurse, doctor - can learn how to start an IJ line (internal jugular vein, either side of neck) in an afternoon as they are so large and in the same location(s) on everyone. The patient can even be fairly dehydrated (an issue for successful/stable peripheral sticks) but a tilt of the stretcher, head to the side, neck straight and skin taut, done in mere moments. Why this isn't the standard training and go-to in lethals, skipping hunting for peripherals entirely, is beyond my reckoning. Defaulting to cutdowns is confounding.

Do they use a scalpel to cut into your arm, then forceps to pull the wound open, and cut/tear out any fat or whatever tissue in the way, so they can get a clear shot at your vein when you go get blood drawn? Without local anesthetic? Because that's what's being discussed - a cutdown procedure.
The indoors farms should be forced to have solar on the rooftops. The fact that it is not mandatory to make every building as energy neutral as possible is beyond me.
one thing to note about vertical farming is that natural farming usually blasts plants with too much light water and anything else. with indoor farming you can exactly track, control and plan for exactly right conditions. this allows for MUCH higher yields. finding the exact food, light, co2 and water combination for specific seeds is basically gold at this moment. you could literally place them in the basement of grocery stores and move them up without ever using any pesticides. the tradeoff? energy. the solution? nuclear power and lots of it.
I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for many years and follow a bunch of groups on Reddit and Facebook with people also tied to the restaurant industry. I’ve seen the overwhelming majority say nothing but bad stuff about David Chang, especially people who have claimed to have worked with him. More often than not, people refer to him as a bully.

As a Medical Laboratory Technologist in Canada, the key word here is "comerical." Any testing that is not ordered by a doctor falls outside of the medical-legal framework and a lot of the regulations consumers/patients would assume apply become nil. There were a lot of problems with private covid labs at the hight of the pandemic since they could just claim "not for medical use"
I live in Oregon. We have hundreds of deaths each year because of people not respecting the rules and/or signage at the beach. People climbing over fences to get to the edge of cliffs. People climbing into wildlife protected areas. People climbing on logs near the water edge which can flip over with no warning. You need to respect the coast. Sneaker waves can strike at any time. If you have never seen the ocean before please check the signs or talk to the park rangers to stay safe. We have breathtaking views and we love visitors but it breaks my heart to see every new death in the news. All of which were preventable.
I have a friend in Arlington, TX (that's near Dallas for all y'all non Texans) and he set up a booth to sell eclipse glasses and snacks. Can't tell you how grateful I am to him for making sure those glasses are NASA certified after hearing about all these people getting eye damage from crappy unsafe glasses from Amazon. The eclipse was a total blast!! (it was my first total eclipse)
As someone from Wollongong, it is very well known about how dangerous waves can be all along that stretch of coastline. Many people every year get swept off rocks nearby when fishing. There are signs everywhere warning of those risks. That being said that spot is often safer for larger adults as there is obstacles to help break up the waves as it is a small harbour. The fact there is a family park right behind the camera combined with toddlers having the superhuman ability to run off for the 1 second you look away, it is hard for me to put a lot of blame on the dad.
My cousins live in Wollongong (I'm from UK). So for a long period of time we were debating whether or not to move, but one of the factors of us staying was the unpredictable weather. BTW when we visited, Flagstaff Point Lighthouse was beautiful, especially the adjacent beach
The rest of the setting really lets me take the rest of the judgement off the dad. The family park combined with the railing on the walkout can let a comfortable Dad relax his guard a touch too far and wind up in this scenario.

Living in Australia, water safety has been drilled into me my whole life. There was an ad on TV when I was a kid and it said, “This is the sound of a child drowning.” It was followed by silence.
When I was two, we were at a BBQ and I apparently just walked down the steps into the pool. I was so close to adults that when someone noticed me flailing about, one of them was able to reach over and yank me out before I drowned!
My in-laws live on the canals, which means their backyard is literally water. Words can’t express how much that fact terrified me when my boys were babies. We had them in swimming lessons from 6 months old and I’ve only in the last few years started relaxing about it. Probably around when my youngest was about 5 and I was confident he’d be able to get to the jetty if he accidentally fell in!
I will never ever not have a healthy amount of respect for the danger that bodies of water present to humans.

I am Latino, Puerto Rican and Cuban specifically, and the idea of someone trademarking or patenting a cultural food is a rough one.
We make a drink around the holidays called “Coquito” (co-key-toh) which is a coconut based rum drink that is not uncommon for people to gift to one another or even sell to close friends.
If a major company, let’s say Goya for sake of discussion, (since they *do* have a kit to make the drink at home minus the rum) were to broadly patent Coquito and send cease and desists to individuals who may sell it or make it at home, there would be a few things I’d expect.
Puerto Ricans would be rioting in the streets, that’s basically THE drink of the Puerto Rican Christmas Season. It’s a major cultural symbol for us where we exchange them as gifts to friends and loved ones. Some even view the act of gifting coquito as a token of friendship.
Also Latinos are stubborn 95% of us wouldn’t abide by something like that, especially Puerto Ricans, we already have a reputation of being loud and proud, threaten our coquito and you’ll hear that real quick.
TLDR: culture and their foods belongs to the people of the world, not individuals.

As an environmentalist, the land use needs to be considered with farming. Most of our land is being put towards farms, causing a huge loss of habitat and just environmental degradation. A field of trees captures more carbon than a field of corn... There is also an amazingly available bridge fuel that can be used nearly immediately called nuclear energy. It can be implemented quickly and immediately turn all that energy comsumption green.

Nuclear energy is neither quick or immediate. It can take around 25 years to build additional Nuclear Plants.
Besides, I personally have concerns with nuclear waste, though that is a heavily debated topic.
Something I hear too little about though, is: isn’t centralizing your energy supply to just a couple nuclear plants a glaring weak spot for potential bad actors (say Russia, IS, North Korea) to take down and essentially shut down most energy supplied to a country?
@@cluelessmango768 not true nuclear energy is getting pretty quick. They also have way safer reactors now. That run on pallets the Military already made one that was as big as a shipping container. That they were planning on using for other stuff. So it’s not really impossible to even use this stuff for disaster relief considering the new pallet based fuel and superheated gas is safer than the traditional reactors. Most people that have bad opinions about nuclear reactors only have those opinions because they’re looking at old reactors

You really don’t want to rely on many of those countries to supply you with pretty much the sole source of your energy.
That said there are also countries like Canada which have access to Uranium and are friendly.
And what about the mines for Uranium? Are they just as messy and nature-destroying as coal mines? How does it compare to the production of solar panels and windmills? Those too can be messy due to the resources needed to make those.
But then we get to the next issue, how long can we keep running on Uranium, a finite resource, before we have to do this whole spiel again? It’s going to run out at some point. I would like to know how long we could last on Uranium if most of the western world started using it.
I just have too many questions and too few answers to be able to wholly back nuclear at this point in time
Never heard of that Brian Dorsey story. I’m Canadian, so we don’t have any executions here. Unfortunately. I’m also a life for a life kind of guy. Whether or not he became a good guy, I know people will absolutely grill me for this but he took two lives that day the most important people in that little girls life. Wow.
For the australian dad, people absolutely can just underestimate things. It's not a mistake he'll make again, but the fact he didn't hesitate at all (which, to his detriment as if he'd died or injured himself flinging off the side that would have just made things even worse) shows there was no malice or intended negligence, he really cares for the kid and genuinely didn't mean to put her in harms way
“Mom think” and “dad think” are a true modern problem. There are so many people who seem to lose common sense after having children and being someone who works on boat tours, it’s insane to see just how dangerous the situations are that parents will put themselves, their children, and others in.
I feel like those people always had it in them to do exceptionally thoughtless/dangerous things, but the exhaustion that comes with being a parent probably brought it out... which is terrifying because now it's more than just their lives in danger!
They lacked it beforehand. Some people think they're superheroes until proven otherwise. Not all of them live to see the consequences of their actions
About the Brian Dorsey story- its very important what was said about rehabilitation losing its meaning. People can and do change, and not allowing any room for that is what makes people double down on bad behaviors. If you're damned either way, why not? However, in these kinds of grave situations, I honestly think that the family of those who were murdered should be able to make the final call, or at least be listened to over others, they're the ones directly affected, after all.
I think because they've been directly effected that's why they shouldn't make the call. When you're going through those kind of emotions you will struggle to see the situation objectively. One person might want to kill someone for something as simple as theft while another person would shrug it off and do nothing. Neither of those are fair punishments for the crime.
@@SmolPotatowotrue it was a drug induced murder and he did turn himself in. He isn’t asking for parole just life in imprisonment. Still willing to go alone with his punishment.
@@SmolPotatowo what's fair for us and for society doesn't matter, it's only what's fair for what Brian feels he did and the people he wronged, including the 4 year old. They're the only ones whose opinions matter in this situation.
I think the indoor farming solution is pretty clear. They need to require indoor farming operations to use some kind of green energy to power their facilities. At the very least a percentage of it. The main reason we haven’t taken the climate crisis seriously in America is capitalism. Just like you said Phil. Sadly, I fear it will be too late before we collectively realize the massive change we should have made twenty years ago.

There's a Canadian (Toronto, IIRC) dog DNA testing lab that got caught giving fake results, too. A woman sent in her own sample, and was told she was 40% malamute. I'm sure that was doggone surprising. 😬
In regards to that father. You can do something stupid and still be a good father. He clearly loved his kid, and not everyone thinks everything through all the way. We all, ALL, make mistakes, and while they may not always be as dangerous as the one he made here, his actions speak clearly as to the love he has for his little girl. No, he shouldn't have been there, but he was, and after she was swept up, he did what he had to do. I'm sure he already feels terrible enough, he doesn't need people compounding it by pointing out that he made a dumb decision, something I'm sure he's already painfully aware of. Just be thankful the little girl is okay, and remember, it's not a mistake he'll ever make again.
Very much agree. The way that people online try to bully someone into submission to see them take blame or apologize for things is appalling and frankly more self-serving than it is helpful to anyone. As you said, there is zero doubt about how much that father cares for his child, and he probably feels guilty enough already. Having the world point a finger and call him dumb is not going to help him or his daughter. It'll only help the righteous morons sleep peacefully in the knowledge that thanks to them, he definitely knows just how dumb he is.

I think the negatives from vertical and indoor farming are not an issue of the new farming practices, but of our current energy production. It seems to me that If we had a higher level of renewable energy resources in place of coal oil and gas, that there would be no issues with indoor farming. So long as we continue to push for renewable and green energy, I personally see no reason to stop pushing for more indoor farming.

That first story was horrifying. It's bad enough for the adults, but I worry the most about the kids. Having a parent that doesn't think you are theirs can lead to abuse and life long challenges.
I like Reddit reading videos, so this sort of story comes up on occasion. I remember one in particular where the mother cheated but the test results for a couple of the kids got switched by accident. The father was told OP wasn’t his and he just started being a huge dick to the kid. When the truth was revealed the father tried to be like, oh I’m sorry I didn’t know you were mine. And the OP wasn’t fucking having it cause the father’s true colours came out. He didn’t love OP, for years that man raised him but he didn’t love him because you could never treat someone you loved that way.
You can be upset that the mother betrayed you but that doesn’t erase love you have for a child. Some people are so disgusting. Do they only see their children as an extension of their di(k? Evidence that they boned?

I feel like the whole "A prisoner was good after he did this horrible thing so we should give him some leniency" is a road we shouldn't go down. I feel like there has to be a cut off for rehabilitation and it's somewhere WAAAAAYYYY before the cold blooded murder of two people who took you in and tried to help you (not even considering the potential rape). This guy did something completely unforgivable and does not deserve a second chance.
It isn't like they were trying to get him to be released, just have the death penalty commuted. Still life without parole

I feel knowing whether or not the rape really happened would help me make up my mind. Murder is horrible but the raping a dead body for some reason makes it 1000 times worse for me…

I always love greenhouse growing and all the benefits it can have. On small scales and household levels it's the best way to feed a family. On a commercial level the best I've seen is the Citron of Calabria in Italy where they grow fruit trees under solar panels
I tried chili crisp for the first time when I visited China. I fell in love and have since been trying to perfect my own recipe that suits my tastes or the kind of dishes I'm making. I even bought Park's book when I saw it across the store at a Barnes & Nobel to try and gain more knowledge of my favorite condiment.
The fact that David Chang, a wildly popular food creator, has the audacity to try and trade mark the term is insane. I get that the sauce is usually called "chili crisp" and he called his "chili crunch." Honestly that really just feels super pedantic.

I'm also glad the child is safe, but absolutely that father should have not put his child in that situation at all.
Also on indoor farming, many of these business have been failing because of high costs of labor (needed for the technical systems used to manage the environment)
