I don’t know, the entire game just seems... disappointing. I greatly enjoyed the first two back on Dreamcast but I just can’t be bothered playing this third game. It just looks so... meh compared to the first two parts.

Because the locations, animations during cutscenes, fighting system all look subpar compared to the first two games, especially Shenmue 2. Locations doesn't look like something that could exist in real world. It seems like different teams made the npc models with completely different art styles in mind. Ryo's model at least kind of resembles Ryo from S1 and 2, while Shenhua looks like a completely different person in Shenmue 3. Also it seems that they tried to recreate the awkward dialogs and some silly stuff (like Ryo looking for sailors) from the originals, which almost never works when done intentionally.
I finished Shenmue 3 and the game wasn't god awfull like some people say, I really enjoyed parts of it, but one third into it I started to feel like I was pretendning to play Shenmue, like I was playing a fan made project or something. Disappointing is the right word to describe the experience, and it is that way because of the high standarts set by the first two games.
Will there be a game of the year edition or complete edition now for Shenmue iii?
Doubt it. Nobody bought the game, because most people already backed the Kickstarter.
Now everyone else has it as well, no reason to re-release it.
Probably not any time soon.

Battle Rally looks like something the Yakuza developers would have included as one of the substory activities. And I mean that in the best of way, it looks like slightly goofy arcadey fun.
Hey Adam! Just wanted to add that if you sleep as Ryo after getting the doll for the guy on the cruise ship for the Big Merry Cruise, there's a second quest available that's even better! It's about finding a fathers lost son on the ship. So that makes the whole ship exploration more worthwhile, and eventually you get a key for that locked door you mentioned and find something rather hilarious :D - hopefully you go back and try this as this made the Big Merry Cruise go from being rather poor, to actually rather good :D

Adam Koralik Haha! Tbh it is really easy to miss some of these things as there’s no real context! Like you said, that kind of usually works in Shenmue games cause you can just speak to any npc. But in these dlc’s, like you said it’s a bit too specific. Better on a second playthrough than trying to force it with a random old save.
I got Shenmue III for Christmas and still haven't got round to playing it yet 😐

The Fishkeeper Depends, only if you know nothing about the series. The biggest complaint was „WHAT IT‘S NOT THE END?!?“
Well you can learn from our mistakes. Like you can make more money if you sell seven-herb sets. Its the last page of the "sell" option. I freaking thought there was only one page.
Dont feel bad. I think I only did the first mission of Yakuza 5.
Overall, I did enjoy my stay with Shenmue III and the DLC was just "OK". I ended up getting the Platinum trophy and 100% with all the DLC, but my god... finding all those flowers without a map was beyond frustrating. My favorite will always be the first Shenmue; the location, weather, music, interactions with people were just magical and hypnotic.
Shenmue 1 was really focused, the two sequels feel more like map pack add-ons. I'd give 2 more credit because I like Ren and Joy. I'd give a movie a hard time if it was essentially the same movie in a new location. So Suzuki is really pushing our goodwill at this point.

I think it's generally accepted they aren't stand alone platforms, I believe all of them require either a PS4 or a PC to work, yes?
@@AdamKoralik The Oculus quest is stand alone. Doesn't require a PC or PS4. I've heard good reviews. You should check it out. Maybe do a future video on it??? I collect consoles as well

As usual great video Ad, I'm not aware of a 4th unlockable character in Battle Rally though. Piece of advice in BR is if you want good times try and find a good combo of special moves (mapped to R trigger) to use on enemies rather than traditional moves then you'll breeze through it. I found Wei Zhen using a combo of Balanced Legs and Revolving Crane Kick to get 1st place on all tracks.
That door you can't open in the lower part of the ship is part of the second mission in the dlc. You also get to search the Wheel room. Its tied to dialog with all the ship npcs' unlike the second DLC.

Its cool . I only found out because I ran into the ship to save. Big Merry Cruise ship gives you a save icon that stands out among the others. I just stumbled onto the second mission.
Interesting video. I beat shenmue 3 yesterday for the first time and honestly I thought it was pretty good. I saw a lot of people acting like it was garbage.
ShenmueSaga It was definitely not a perfect game but I did manage to have fun with it and I don’t regret playing it.
I liked it. It was just the ending that could have been better. But not a bad game for a kickstarter project.
I'm really looking forward to playing Shenmue 3 again, especially with the DLC. I'll be playing it in either August or November. Hopefully August as Shenmue 3 took so long to come out, I don't think I can wait too long to play it again.
Hi I’m from the future, Adam does review dlc again after the Shenmue 4 dlc comes out.
The story quest icon that points you towards the right NPC is identical to how all sidequest NPCs are marked, it's just blue instead of gold, so the practical difference isn't huge. It only removes a little guesswork, which was probably a good thing for this particular quest.
Man during this quarantine I should probably get to playing Shenmue 1 and 2 already. I've been waiting on it to REALLY sit down and play it for so long
The battle rally „run and beat up“ mode was actually used in the last location of the story, so it‘s not completely new.
Battle Rally enemies put up more of a fight than those guys. You cant pick up mushrooms to heal, there is a fat enemy that isnt in the main game. Hmmmm pretty different. Plus no Ren or Wei Shen.
GoDokuNoDAN I know it is different, wouldnt make sense otherwise, I‘m talking about the basic gameplay of it. And I swear you could pick up a few items during it in the game, I could be wrong though.

Im ok overall with Shenmue 3 and the DLC ‘Big merry cruise’ was my favorite and best dlc overall
I just finished my first playthrough of Shenmue 3 yesterday and I bought the season pass DLC as soon as the game installed.
So for me it was just like having a slightly larger side mission during the Niaowu chapter, which I quite enjoyed although I put off the merry cruise section too long and the cruise ship left once Shenhua was kidnapped 😅
Haven't given battle rally a go yet but I will when I play through gameplus mode and go for the platinum trophy 😊

Battle Rally looks like you could overlay _Mario 64_ Slider music and it would make a lot of sense :P

Yeah, if you're doing a playthrough for the first time, there's no reason not to have the DLCs already there.
Adam you should do handconsoles retrospective ( sega gameyear, gameboy, etc..)
I am pretty sure that Adam hate handheld consoles... still it will be a cool idea if he actually made handheld retrospective video

I think the added content was already included in the base game, as the the size of the dlc files was very tiny. It should have been integrated better so you can play each dlc separately.
I know for a first hand fact that's not true. The DLC was included in patches. The DLC files you refer to were just the unlock keys from the patch data.

Hopefully there will be a GOTY edition where all those DLC’s will be pressed on a disc. How many years will we have to wait for the 4th one ?

17:15 you most likely found this out by now but in case you haven't there's actually a second mission in the big merry cruise dlc. I think the season pass as a whole was good

The ship looks convenient for certain parts of the game. It wouldn’t hurt to have it, but I don’t think it‘s necessary.
Battle Rally was fun was worth the price

The first DLC reminds me of 70 man battle from the first one without the timer going down.
Okay, I have played all 3 DLC. My view is Battle Rally was DLC done right. I liked the fact it gave you something different and unique. Story pack was DLC done wrong. It should have been in the game. It felt like it was taken out of the game and put back in. Big Merry Cruise was awful. Especially doing it 100%. BTW you can open that door as there is a second substory in Big Merry Cruise that you haven't done (at least when this video was made). I can't put into words how much I despised Big Merry Cruise. Great review though. Nice to hear your opinion on it.

Glad i didn't bother going through all that guff in Niaowu just to start that DLC. Looks completely pointless and is just a load of fetch quests and chawan sign making. What a waste. Would've preferred the money going into these two DLC's be put back in the game itself in someway.

Jesus. So basically it would have been better to wait to start playing shenmue 3 till the story dlc packs came out, so that there would have been more to engage with as u go thru it. Cos fuck, I'm not gonna play it from scratch just for those extra bits.
It seems to me that the last 2 DLCs were already in the game, and they were just simply unlocked by downloading the DLC, because both of those DLC files were literally only 1.8 MB (or 1.5 MB.. either way, less than 2 MB) & were downloaded & installed in less than 5 seconds.
And there's no way all the extra npcs & their dialogue, their cutscenes, and the fights were all contained in those 1.8 MB downloads.. right?
So I wonder why all the regular npcs didn't have dialogue related to the DLC side quests as well
They were in the patches, the 1.8 MB file just unlocked it from the patch.

The environments are stunning in S3. Ryo's movement is a bit funky but it was really robotic on Dreamcast, as well. Of course the game lacks a certain level of polish due to the budget, but overall I think it's a great looking game.

Battle Rally is so classic Suzuki/Naka Sega. They made a racing game akin to Sonic 2/3 and Nights. It's not as good as those but fun. The Bailu Chan game was way more fun and addicting then I expected in a relaxing way. So the first DLC is definitely worth it. The second DLC had the good idea to use diffent Chowan signs but kind of falters by being repetitive and the story doesn't reveal itself all that well. I hated the third DLC. I don't know why they bothered if they weren't going to add at least 1 new gambling game. The first mini story the main character is psychotic and annoying and the second mini story is creepy and not funny. For $15 total it's not a terrible package for hard core Shenmue fans.

It's odd everyone seems to dislike Battle Rally, I fucking loved it, it was my favorite. I also quite enjoyed the Story Pack never got around to the boat cruise. I quite enjoyed Shenmue 3 overall, it is not flawless, but not god awful like some are saying either. It also positive that YS NET built a good foundation upon which to improve 4.
Why is it odd? Do you think people should like the same things you like? Does the world revolve around you? I think not. And i won't hold my breath for the 4th game. This game barely made it after all these years and it came out shit.

I'm really glad to say that I have absolutely no interest in these DLC packs since I hate DLC, especially paid DLC and was very disappointed that a game like Shenmue III would wave it. For people who like the concept of DLC though, I can't imagine they were particularly excited about these, a lot of games give free DLC with more content than these packs.

But the NEXT day you come, the story of that day is a little kid and THAT was the most hilarious and awesome story item on that ship!! It was hilarious and it involves that room with the door you couldn’t open. I can’t believe you missed that!

I really wish they had a proper budget for shenmue 3. The fighting animations are so awful its not even funny. I wish they kept they same game engine as the first two with the budget they were on. Shenmue 1 and 2 are my most favorite games and its sad to see it like this. Don't get me wrong I'm glad it came out but i feel like we won't get another entry to the series and even if we do, if the mechanics are anything like this i wouldnt even want to play it.

Lets be honest here. This game has always been garbage. Most of the game is 1.asking the same questions to people 2.waiting for appointments 3.playing the same shitty arcade games 4.tiny bits of fighting (rare). Walking around talking to people thats MOST of the game. Its trash
