I'm an avionics technician. Pro tip: put the pilots headset on, they probably already have at least one comm set to ATC already. On the yoke or nearby there should be a button that says PTT (Push-to-Talk). Press it then ask tower how to land it. A lot of planes can do most of the landing for you with minimal input but they'll walk you through the process.

Those planes have tons of fuel in them. I reckon the air traffic control people would tell you to set the autopilot to come into the landing strip as straight as possible to take multiple attempts if you need to. If you think you're running out of space (the strips can be several miles long but better to slowly descent and to take it slowly), then you pull up and try again. You have one chance to land the plane

There have been 7 recorded instances of a pilot being incapacitated and a passenger making radio contact with an air traffic controller who tried to tell them how to land the plane. All 7 landings were successful.
Most of these smaller planes as most commercial jets have copilots who could land the plane in an emergency. Said commercial jets also have more advanced autopilot systems that would make it even easier to land the plane.

my GF asked me the 747 question and i answered "yeah, probably" and she started laughing and couldnt believe i thought that. but like people have done it. as long as you can get guided by a guy over the radio and remain calm you can "land" the plane. And by land, i dont mean landing gear out, safe landing in an airport, i mean you find a clear enough area to crash as safely as possible.

    • @nada476
      @nada476 8 місяців тому +128

Certainly, if you have radio support and the plane is operating normally, it is practically following instructions. In addition, they will repeat them for as many hours as you have fuel while the plane flies in circles.
From what I understand there are several cases of inexperienced people who have been forced to land non-commercial airplanes.
And a commercial airplane is more complex? Yes. But it is still possible.

To land a plane you only really need 4 things
    1. The controls for a plane is pull back is up
Push is down and left is left and right is right
    2. Find the altimeter it will show the height of the aircraft

Not gonna lie, this something I actually think about on regular basis. This might not surprise anyone, but I legit think if it came down to it anyone could land a 747.
Now a lot of caveats come with this.
    1. Communication: This isn't something you're going to simply be able to do on your own. You would need to get on the horn with ATC to communicate your situation so that way they can get an actual pilot to talk you through how to land safely. Also, this will be a two person job. Get a 2nd homie to help you out with your cockpit resource management. There will be checklists to run and they will help you manage those. Always remember your priorities though: Aviate (fly the plane), Navigate (figure out where to fly the plane), and communicate (talking to ATC or anyone else).
    2. Auto Pilot: This feature will be doing most of the heavy lifting since it will point you in the direction of the air port, get you lined up with the run way, and put you at the correct altitude.
    3. Some aircraft familiarization: You're going to have to have at least a basic understanding how a plane works. This includes knowing what the terms stall, sink rate, and angle of attack mean as well as some of the various systems.
In the end, you land a plane by achieving a steady rate of descent which won't cause a catastrophic failure of the landing gear/airframe while still maintaining enough forward speed so that the aircraft doesn't lose lift and fall out of the sky. Now get out there kings and land that god damn plane like your life depends on it.

Having worked at a flight school and flown a plane several times I'm quite certain that most people could land one without any training. Not only do airliners usually land themselves (not joking they literally land themselves, if you don't believe me go to your local airport and watch as every airliner comes in to land at exactly the same speed and altitude regardless of the weather) but on the off chance that it couldn't land itself you'd still have ATC (air traffic control) telling you what to do. Flying is actually easier than driving a car imo. It's learning the rules and regulations of air traffic that pilots really have to go to school for. I mean on my first flight the instructor literally didnt touch anything except the radio. I did everything else including take off and landing.

Yeah, fun fact: a 747 can land basically on it's own, just talk to the ATC and they will tell you everything you need to know, punch in the numbers and you're done. All you'll have to do is deploy landing gear, flaps, and thrust reversers.

It's called and ASR(Acute Stress Reaction) and it's due to the spike in adrenaline, increased heart rate and respiration. The adrenaline spike constricts the blood vessels, increasing blood pressure and making the person think faster because the blood is carrying oxygen to their brain much faster and their muscles are also getting oxygen at an accelerated rate which makes people stronger and less easily fatigued for a short period. This can later lead to an ASD(Acute Stress Disorder) in which the affected person experiences PTSD.
