Instead of a vw jig, i got an old transmission case, and cut it and made my own jig!!! And it was a success. Thanks to you sir i repaired my set aside gear box!!! enjoying this thread. question for you. what makes the transmission decide it doesn't like to stay in gear? i had driven thousands of miles on my 74's new transmission when one day for no particular reason, pop, out of gear. then i lost another. i have 1, 3 and reverse or at least i did when i stopped driving it 21 years ago.
+Scotty C Well like anything else things wear and over time those clearances stack up and one day it rears its ugly head. Almost sounds like the pinion bearing moved. When it jumps out of gear it shocks the rest of them and the problem spreads. I would be a fool to guess without having the guts in my hand.
10:30 I am taking a IRS AM transmission apart taking the VW original docs and your channel. Thanks! The transmission is in great shape, all in spec despite the backlash. I measured 0.4 mm backlash with the special tools. The VW formula would say a decrease of backlash plus 0.2 mm (=0.2 mm) on the driver side and an increase of the same at the pinion side. Does this backlash gets larger over 50 years? Would you put in back to spec or leave it as worn as is?
I would leave it alone unless it's making a lot of noise. 50 years of rubbing makes a comfortable fit. If you start changing things it has effects on other area's. Loose is better than to tight. Just don't get crazy on the Horsepower and aftermarket performance clutches.
