Note to everyone asking why we didn't spend more time on the later albums: yes, because we could talk about those early classics all day BUT also because you didn't submit as many comments or opinions on them. Lock Horns is a threeway between Sam,the guest and the live chat so if the audience wants something they have to speak up! If you can't tune in live you can always visit the live stream page earlier in the day. Lots of regulars hanging in the chat talking about metal plus we do read those comments and include them as well. Thanks for watching!

      BANGER
I view Seplutura in similar way I few Van Halen and Metallica.
      1) Metallica's first 4-5 albums are some of the best metal/thrash music of all time. Master of Puppets and Ride the lightning are masterpieces. After the Black album they became more radio friendly rock and were not the metal legends they were early in their career. Seplutura also has some of the best metal albums of all time w/ Beneath the Remains, Arise, and Chaos A.D. Then they started playing Nu Metal and ruined it for me.
      2) Van Halen had some of the best hard rock albums of all time w/ Fair Warning and Women & Children first. After 1984 they became Van Hagar playing pop music. Just like Van Halen was great w/ David Lee Roth and terrible w/ Hagar. Seplutura is not Seplutura without Max.

Even attempting to draw a parallell between Sepultura and Metallica is insulting. You may not like Nu Metal, of course. But please note the difference: in the case of Metallica, the post AJfA move is a question of (loss of) integrity. WIth Sepultura it is a question of a choice of esthetic.

      *****
Interesting points but I don't agree with them at all. Burns made the bands he worked with sound much better sonically speaking. A lot of the bands that had put something out before him sounded like total shit/demo material/garage recordings. Burns actually made them sound like someone actually produced the albums. If the stuff got stale (and your right because music always gets stale) I blame the record company and not Burns. A good bit of those bands were forced into a certain mold/style/sound prototype by Roadrunner and Burns made the best of shitty written music.I personally like the production that came from Burns and Florida much better than from anywhere else at that point. I think a lot of the European bands in that genre from that time wrote killer music but the production was total mud.

    • @mosesgarner2404
      @mosesgarner2404 7 років тому +1

Tomas Skogsberg...hmmm. I think of him as more of an engineer and not producer although he's done both. He engineered a friend of mine in God Macabre. Through talking to Ola I realized there's a bit of a rift in opinion when it comes to American Death Metal and the European Death Metal of the early 90s. People here in the US tend to be partial to the stuff that came out of Florida and I admit that's where I fall into place while Death metal fans in Europe didn't care for what was going on in America at that time at least not as much as what came out of Sweden and England. My favorite Tomas Skogsberg stuff is by far Entombed. I respectfully agree to disagree on what sounded better. Just a matter of personal taste I think.

Yeah I admit it I went overboard on the first three Derrick Green albums and kind of a bit on roots as well. But this was my favourite thrash band and what they did during that time makes me mad still, regardless of how actually good the albums may be.
But also one thing: Roots was not a rip-off or pandering. That's even too big an insult for my tastes.

theres more tribal on roots than anything closely related to korn plus chaos set the stage for roots

    • @VBshredder
      @VBshredder 7 років тому +4

yeah while Korn for sure influenced them on Roots, they also added their own tribal flavor that started on chaos and blew up on Roots - but i won't fault them for changing the style - i think more than anything, they thought it was really cool sounding what Korn had done and wanted to play some similar stuff - we all get inspired sometimes...beats being too stubborn to change.

Hmmm...Arise was the first Sepultura album I had ever heard and it was shortly after it was released in 1991. I was hooked right away. Arise to this day remains my favorite Sepultrua album. I then went back and listened to the prior albums. Was into Beneath The Remains a lot but didn't much care for Schizo and Morbid Visions. I dug Chaos AD when it came out but it took me a little time to get used to the change in style. Dug Roots when it came out too but after that...I just couldn't and still can't get into the band anymore. I've tried but it's just not there for me personally. The band died for me when Max left. I'm not a huge fan of Soulfly thou either. Some of it's great but some of what I hear when I hear Soulfly is forgettable. I was a HUGE fan of the Nailbomb album when it came out. Arise all day, everyday, 8 daze a week.

A few ideas for future episodes on a legendary band:
    - Death

Sepultura is originally from a city called Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais State in Brazil.
It's the city I was born and raised in.
The Metal scene in the city came to being around a record store (that unfortunately doesn't exist anymore) called Cogumelo (Brazilian Portuguese for mushroom). From afar one was able to see a gathering of long haired young people at the door..
It was know as "that place" where "the misfits" gathered.
The owners of Cogumelo started a record label - Cogumelo records - since nobody but them were bold enough to produce and release records from the local metal bands.
It was at this label that Sepultura recorded its first album, Bestial Devastation, a shared EP with another local band called Overdose, and then went on to record their first full album Morbid Visions. Schizophrenia was also released by Cogumelo records.
The band wasn't very well known in the city until the Beneath the Remains album. Actually the band started to get some notice after they went to Europe for the first time - and that piqued young people's curiosity and interest about them. We knew that their sound was heavy.
Belo Horizonte was actually too small for Sepultura. Soon they started touring around the world to larger and larger crowds.
Some members of other(mostly former ) heavy metal bands from Belo Horizonte criticize the members of Sepultura for never promoting the local bands and the local heavy metal scene. Yet even they agree that the guys from Sepultura were the ones who had guts to go abroad, promote their sounds, stay in close contact with their fan base (they replied to their fans letter). Apparently in the local scene, there was too much drug consumption and drug use.
I still listen to some Sepultura records, even though I've never seen them live. My favorite albums? Morbid Visions, Schizophrenia, Beneath the Remains and Arise. Arise would be my number one.
Me, I think it's odd the fact that I got to pass by Cogumelo stores many times while it was there. I never entered.
And I've been to Bar do Bolao, a place the band used to eat at - great bar, great food.

It's impressive to see how both of them got their predictions right when commenting on Machine Messiah. First, Danko Jones' precision, he immediately placed MM as the beginning of a new era for the band. Definitely yes! Secondly, both said that MM seemed to be the preview of something even grander, that MM would be to the next album like Schizophrenia was to Beneath the Remains and Chaos AD was to Roots. And that was exactly it. Quadra is magnificent! It is Sepultura’s masterpiece in the 21st Century.

Beneath The Remains and Arise are equally crushing in my book. Fast, dirty, and dark I could go back and forth as to which one is my favorite hour to hour. Chaos AD was very take it or leave it with me, Territory being the exception, I love that song so much!
Roots expanded on what they started on Chaos AD and I think they really created something special for the time. I still listen to a few tracks from it today. The next few records sorta lost me but I still listened to them with each release. The last 2 (Mediator and MM) I think have seen them finally coming into their own with Derrick on vocals.

Beneath is on my top three records of all time. I was lucky enough to see them live in Buenos Aires at the end of that tour. We were 500 people there and i remember they attempted a Cro-Mags song but nobody knew about it and they played Sabbath instead. Anyway they played Sex Pistols "Bodies" too. The crowd was a mix of Thrashers, Hardcore kids and punks. Nex year they return with Arise and they were huge. Last time i saw them live was on the Chaos AD tour and they were massive. I personally love the Schizo/Beneath/Arise trilogy. Horns up!

I always used use slayer references when it comes to Sepultura. Schizophrenia was more Hell Awaits. Beneath was more like South of Heaven, Arise was moe Reign in Blood, and Chaos was more like Seasons. Can't pick a favorite though. Like picking a favorite Slayer or Sabbath record. Later albums alright, but nothing up against these three. Arise and Beneath were the best.

Beneath the Remains is one of my favourite albums of all time. It's so fast and heavy and full of catchy hooks.
The band was so hungry to prove their worth on the world stage. The guys at Roadrunner would have been doing back flips after hearing it for the first time. Just knowing their investment was going to pay off.

The reality is, if Max stayed, Sepultura would become a Soulfly with better instrumental work. Thinking about it now I am glad they parted ways, allowing the band to do the shifts they want in terms of sonority, wether we liked or not. They for sure seem as happy as ever, and they are living their best moment in Derrick's era.
And I need to say that Machine Messiah is by far their best album with Derrick. Intense, diverse guitar works, Derrick's vocals are clear and with a lot of feeling (not just barks). I think that part of that is due to Eloy's energy, the kid is a monster and raised the bar for the other guys.

If you wanna figure out the best of Sepultura, it's sth between Beneath The Remains and Roots but I particulary preffer Chaos AD than everything else. In my opinion, without C.A., Roots wouldn't even exist.
    Cheers from Brazil!!

Old Sepultura is by far my favorite metal band, with each album they evolved, always delivering the goods. beneath, arise & chaos are the band's peak points, cant decide which one is better, beneath has this raw energy to it and arise sounds mature and serious, then the change in chaos just came as a breath of fresh air. Roots flirts too much with the nü metal scene of the time for my taste but i still enjoy it. With that said just imagine how that tour with sepultura & pantera back in the early 90's was?!?!? Fuk, i envy those who could witness it and got to fuck shit up.

I'll probably get a lot of hate when I say this, but I prefer Roots more than Schizophrenia. Roots was my first album, and I play that album everyday. Their cover of Procreation of The Wicked and their song Attitude are my favorite songs from that album. I do love Schizophrenia though, It's the album that got me more into Sepultura. Rest In Pain is my favorite song from that album.

"Sorority Rapist Jock Metal" . . . WOW.
That was great haha :D. I think that's perfect. But Sepultura may have been ripping off or inventing (gahhh!) NUmetal with "Roots" but they made it their own animal. But man the comments about it were hilarious!
I believe my 1st exposure was hearing them on a college radio station (88.7 KSPC Claremont CA.) on a show called "Infernal Rage" where I was introduced to International Thrash and early Death Metal (from Sweden, Finland, Norway, Greece and South America, etc.) and heard "Schizophrenia", but it was when "Beneath the Remains" had just been released. And then my little brother (who was in his late teens) introduced me to "Beneath the Remains" and I was just grasping Death Metal - but it was this album that opened the door for me wide open and I began to delve into the Death Metal scene.
I had already been a fan of the cover artist "Michael Whelan", known for his Art gracing Fantasy/Sci-Fi Book covers, so its ironic that my favorite albums by Sepultura feature his art. Though "Roots" had to really grow on me (no pun intended), but I admit I don't listen to it much anymore. But I agree that it may be the "most influential" and definitely shows where the "Tribal" influences come from (But I personally cringe that it may have given NUmetal its exceleration).
But "Chaos A.D." is awesome personally, even if they went the "Aggro" route (as I remember Marco Barbieri of Century Media and his mag "Ill Literature" using that moniker, now called "Groove Metal" - it seemed even Kreator with "Renewal"/"Cause for Conflict" and Overkill "I Hear Black" tried to ride the wave), it was super angry, heavy and a well put together album. I love its energy and the lyrics.
But "Beneath the Remains" and "Arise" for me is what the band is all about, and in those days (and Chaos), Igor Cavalera was so damn meticulous and used EVERY drum and cymbal in his arsenal to its full potential. Soo much aggression yet they were tight and still heavy as a fucking Tiger tank.
When "Against" came out, I could feel that they were truly losing me and I was moving onto other Metal bands. Though I LOVE the instrumental "Kamaitachi" because at that time I was heavily into Japanese folk music and the Taiko Drum Group "Kodo" (who are guests on the Sepultura track), and a few weeks after its release, when I worked at Tower Records in Santa Monica, "Kodo" was doing a signing at a Bookstore around the corner, I had them sign the album and they were actually surprised and excited to sign it :).
I also owned the Beneath the Remains shirt, I eventually cut off the sleeves and wore it till the black faded to brown and became threadbare :p. Though I did not see them till "Arise" at the Hollywood Palladium and still one of my all time fave shows. It had a huge pit and the whole place went nuts!
I still wear a longsleeve from the Chaos AD show and its still in great condition.
I miss Sepultura with the Cavalera Brothers, but I need to listen to the last 2 albums, and the latest, but from the few tracks I've heard its not bad, seems to be going back to their more Thrash period. I'm definitely interested in its progressive leanings.
People should also checkout the Soulfly albums "Dark Ages" and "Conquer", harkens back to those great Sepultura days.
    "!!!!!MASS HYPPIE NO-SIS!!!!!" \m/

    1. Arise
    2, Beneath The Remains
    3. Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia may be one one the most underrated albums in all of metal. It has some of the most mind blowing riffs I have ever heard. It doesn't get the praise it should because of the production. Look at most of the early albums from a lot of those thrash bands. They didn't have the best production, but many of those albums get praised. Schizophrenia is right up there with early Slayer, Exodus, Kreator etc...
