Established in 1987, Melbourne International Comedy Festival (#MICF) is one of the three largest comedy festivals in the world, alongside Edinburgh Festival Fringe and Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival.
Over the last week of March and into April every year, #MICF transforms Melbourne into the comedy capital of the world, as local and international comedians take to theatres, pubs, clubs and broom cupboards citywide - shining a spotlight on the silly, the serious, the heart-breaking and the hilarious.
With hours of comedy content every Festival, this channel delivers some of the highlights over the years. Delve into the archive of comedy with international stars (such as: Katherine Ryan, Michael Che, Sara Pascoe, Trevor Noah), home-grown #aussiecomedy heroes (including: Hannah Gadsby, Josh Thomas, Aunty Donna, Ronny Chieng) and so many more! @@kayb402 yeah I mean Chapelle is probably the most popular comedian in the world so he is a lot of people’s cup of tea haha. Aussie comedy (and UK comedy too really) is not all that similar to those US Comedy Store road guys, partially because our touring is different. In the US you can go on the road endlessly and do comedy clubs, so you get 30ish mins of good punchy memorable bits that you often keep doing for years. In Aus and the UK there are only about 5 cities you can perform in (unless you’re a massive comic), so we have the Melbourne festival and Edinburgh in the UK, where a comic does an hour one-person show 25 nights in a row and then never does it again. So the styles are influenced by how they have to perform to make a living. You might like Luke Heggie (check out his bit on Unisex bathrooms from the gala this year) or Damien Power (he has a few good gala spots too) they’re still not the same but probably the closest guys we have to Burr and Schultz etc. We claim Ronny Chieng as well because he started comedy here, he’s opened for Burr a bunch of times so you might like him too. As much as I think Sam Campbell is brilliant he’s very unique and not really indicative of Australian comedy as a whole. Thanks for coming to my TED talk lol
