Lighthearted black films to check out: I’m assuming you seen Ice Cubes Friday trilogy, ATL(2006), House Party(1990), Class Act(1992), Harlem Nights(1989), Coming To America(1988), Barbershop(2002), Roll Bounce(2005), How High(2001), Soul Plane(2004), National Security(2003), DrumLine(2002), Life(1999), Money Talks(1997), Major Payne(1995).
The directors called Boyz N The Hood a fairytale where Trey and his girl made it out the hood. They made this as an "anti-Boyz N The Hood" to show what REALLY happens and what can happen when you try to live that life. That's why the tagline for the movie is "This is the truth... this is what's real. " 16:10 You can't tell me that dude couldn't pass for Ronnie's baby daddy. Her kid looks EXACTLY like him. 😂😂
That's sad and if they did it for that reason it's untrue! I grew up in those times and these areas and people did get out and do great things! Not everyone died!
@marvintrotter7109 man ask the directors lol. I forgot where I read it but it was an interview with one of them. When I first read it myself I was like "Whoa"...I seriously related to Boyz N The Hood(especially the earlier kids scene) because as a kid back in the 80s I heard and seen a lot while living in L.A. hoods.
You clearly must love & care about black men since you said your taking a break from these type of movies cause you didn't want to see black men getting killed that's exactly why Friday was made & as a young black man i appreciate your concern about us ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Some classics I recommend. Jackie Brown starring Pam Grier, Samuel L Jackson, Robert Deniro. Harlem Nights starring Eddie Murphy, Richard Pryor. Im Gonna Git U Sucka starring Keenan Wayans, Damon Wayans. New Jack City starring Wesley Snipes, Ice T, Chris Rock.
This movie shows how the streets are you either end up dying which happened to Caines cousin him, and O Dog ended up prison. Caines grandfather also asks him if he cares whether he dies or not and he replies I don’t know after he dies he answers the question when narrating and says I do! This movie here shows the reality of the streets and how it ain’t sweet 💯 there’s plenty more to touch on but that’s a quick summary.
The detective is bill duke! Old school actor! Hey love look up this story of the outlawz napoleon fighting Tyren turner aka Caine from menace to society off the UA-cam channel art of dialogue you’ll love both versions from both point of views!
I grew-up in a BAD hood in PHILLY,also grew-up with plenty of dudes like O-Dogg. You watched what you said around them, because we knew they were unstable and would act on their violent impulses. The hood films weren't an escape for me tho, just a reminder of how fragile and short life is. Philly was so violent we nick-named it-LITTLE-BEIRUT. LOL. And Philly is also a very racist city towards blacks, just thought I'd throw that in there.
I feel you. I live in north Philly rn. This area wild asf. Never felt like I needed a weapon till I came here. Now I don’t even leave the house w/o it on me. 😵💫
@@Wazizi Back in the 90s I worked at a clothing store for women as a security guard in North Philly ( I lived in SW Philly then ) it was also my first time seeing Puerto-Rican people too. I thought it was strange seeing dark-skinned ( I thought they were black folks at first ) blacks speaking spanish. LOL. Had no issues working there, treated everyone as I wanted to be treated. I still remember when a black family from SW Philly moved into a white neighborhood in South Philly. All the windows were smashed on her car, plus all her tires were slashed. 2 weeks into her stay,a big cross was burning on her lawn at night. This was shown on tv,the local news-team were filming it-LIVE. Finally this black woman got the message and moved. I joined the army in late 94 to bounce outta Philly and never looked back. LOL.
A classic movie Boys In the Hood is a hood classic but Menace to Society took this to a whole new level of a hood movie showing us how boys in the hood really get down with the gun toting and killing now Cain was not only caught up he was born into the life and saw death at a very young age so he thought that was normal which is why it was so hard for him to leave that life
In the opening. You mentioned the “hurry up and buy” scene from Dont Be a Menace To South Central, the couple in that is the same actors in this movie too 😂
That's due to govt policies that defunded education in black America in the 90s and black media only pushing out negative characters for ppl to watch. Jordan Peele got black balled for a while cause he wasn't "hood" enough for many black producers. He went to white media and got his break.
Crazy they was asked if it was Kanes baby in the end. Come to find out it wasn’t. She was know around the streets. Kane was killed for no reason pretty much
The character shareef in this movie was the same person that played the knucklehead in boyz in the hood that took Ricky’s ball, which I think was to emphasize shareefs change for better.
As to speak of Bxoyz N' Tha Hood....Tre just lived in the Hood, but he wasn't living the street life.......Caine was twice in odds, from his home life that was violent, but also saw an example of a moderate home life through the grand-parents, so he still had a chance.
If Caine's grandparents didnt kick him out, he would've gotten shot up in front of his grandparent's house and put their lives in danger. Caine would've just ended up moving to Atlanta and starting trouble there - that's all he knew. This movie gave me nightmares when I saw it back when it came out. Black men please stop killing each other.
The Hughes Brothers stated, in an interview, that they realized that Kaine would have been the bad guy and the antagonist if you put him in a movie like "Boys N The Hood". So they wrote up his friends O-Dog and A-Wax as completely irredeemable, so Kaine would appear more sympathetic by comparison. By the end of the movie, you're actually rooting for Kaine, a violent, drug dealing murderer.
One of the things I love about this movie is the nuance of Caine vs Kevin (I refuse to call O-Dogg by his nickname, he pisses me off so much). As you said, Caine is a violent, murderous drug dealer, but Kevin and the others are utterly irredeemable and you find yourself wanting Caine to get out before its too late
I saw at the $1.50 movie theater twice when i was a kid. I hate that Caine died & i wanted him to make it out of the hood. The lesson of this movie is everything catches up with you in the end. Rewatching this as an adult i realized that Caine was doing too much & the movie did a great job of making him look like the protagonist. O-Dogg was a dumbass because he was showing off the robbery tape like it was a sports reel. I don’t think Illena was pregnant, she pretended to be in order to trap Caine. Fun Facts: The late 2Pac was supposed to play Sharif. He was upset because there was no back story on how Sharif coverted to Islam & he wanted to play O-Dogg instead & he assaulted the directors. A-Wax & Chauncey did voiceovers on GTA: San Andreas. Can we please get a review on the following movies: New Jack City South Central Fresh New Jersey Drive
The cycle you referenced is vicious. Shareef was on the path to getting away and was trying to help uplift his bros, even by informing them about allah. Shareef character passing saddens me most, but also offers the reminder that just being close to the madness can get you hurt.
Classic movie Shareef's part was originally written for Tupac but he wanted the character to have more depth and literally got into an altercation with the Hughes brothers and was fired from the project. They got the rights to do his documentary and I just think it was a money 💰 grab for them. Tupac would have never worked with them. Jordan Downs housing projects is in South Central Los Angeles in the Watts community where I grew up. My Aunt has lived there for over 40 years. The Grape 🍇 street Crips is known for that neighborhood.
Not the stitch with the kid trying to say "You could do anything" 😂😂😂 That was brilliant. Looking forward to more reactions. Interested to know how old you are, if I had to guess I'd say you're still in your 20's. If so there's probably a lot of great older films you haven't seen...or maybe you have. Not sure if you were deliberately sticking to movies with predominantly black cast to start out ("hood" flicks or not) but I'd suggest you start mixing it up sooner than later. It will grow your channel faster...besides, I love our people, and we have tons of talent, but unfortunately have a habit of telling redundant stories. Anyways, you got my sub, for sure. Be blessed.
