This is the most helpful FT-710 video on youtube. I just watched 10 videos and this has by far the most detailed info presented in a concise format. Thank you!
Having a mouse hooked up and an external monitor is a game changer. You no longer need to use the touch screen on the radio. The right button brings up the menu. The right button is used to go back. I'm using a 10-inch VGA monitor. it's great and a great radio.
I bought this for the same reason, the mouse and I am running a 24 inch curved monitor on it! Outstamding! ICOM 7300 does not have a monitor connection...
I will never stop hating Yaesu for not giving us this exact same feature on the FTDX10... Despite everyone asking for this sense the day it came out, they ignore us. It's pure stupidity on an otherwise wonderful radio.
Not sure about touch screen. Plug in any mouse in back of radio to USB port and use your mouse it is much easier, at least for me. Good Luck to you.@@Conorkc86
Had mine for a couple of months now, fantastic bit of kit, love it, out performs everything else I own. I know some people dislike the Yaesu menu system but I have found it very easy and intuitive to use.
Only thing I would comment on is your mentioning that you got good comments on the audio; you have such a nice sounding and peaceful voice that you could make the worst radio and mic combination sound superb! Love listening to your videos!!
Purchased the FT-710 AESS Today looking forward to plugging it in really love the idea of being able to plug into external monitor and mouse , great job of the video
Something not in the video, being able to see exactly where the source of noise is using the "multi" screen, and then scroll the "notch" over that noise is really awesome.
Great review and insights into the misunderstood 710. I am an ex big Icom then Flex guy. Friend bought a FTDX10 and it blew me away with its receiver and DNR etc. So much so I bought a FTDX101MP and then quickly sold my Flex 6400M. Pure joy to operate and the receiver and noise/Interference filtering stellar. Well, I bought a 710 for field work. I have to say this is the best value for your money in a HF rig there is and I can’t figure out how they did this in such a small package.
Nice presentation Peter. BTW You can select 15 different noise-reduction algorithms. Hold the DNR button and turn the function to select a different level. Thanks again 73.
Outstanding introduction to this great Transceiver. I have had one for a while and I am very happy with it, especially the mouse and Monitor connection. You showed me some things I did not know. Thank you....
I have been licenced for just over a year and bought a Xiegu G90 as my first radio because I wanted a reasonably low cost radio with all the features this SDR provided. I have also used the G90 as a portable radio on camping holidays with great results. I have never used a traditional radio. Having now passed the intermediate exam I was looking to buy another radio. I was so impressed with the G90 I saved up for the FT 710 field because it was an SDR like the G90 and was nearer my budget. Having read the manual and watched demonstration videos on UA-cam I haven't found it too daunting to learn and operate a far more complex radio than the G90. I have also been very impressed with the audio quality and operation of this radio. Using a mouse to control the radio and an old external monitor I was given for free has been the icing on the cake.
I was thinking about buying the FTdx101 but as i already have the FTDx10 this may just compliment what i have now and still give me two similar receivers in the shack that i wanted as well as fresh tech(Full SDR) It is also portable enough to take out too. Thanks Peter, great video.
Excellent review! I always enjoy your videos. You stay on point and cover the features that most HAMs would want to ask about. I like to try different radios and the FT-710 will be my next purchase. 73! 🎹🎼🎸
Had mine on pre-order before it was released. Had it 14-15 months now. Excellent performer for a small package. Mouse allows full control including menu selection and the mouse scroll wheel also acts as a VFO to change frequency up and down. All great features when hooked up to an external monitor. The noise reduction capabilities are also very good. But despite having it for well over a year, I still learned something from this review: I never noticed the AESS frequency cut off selection!! So thanks for that!
A really well thought out and presented review, more an instruction than review - unlike so many others you’ve actually demonstrated and explained the features. Still using (and loving) my FT857d but this is the I want to have radio. Thing is I have an FX-4CR for portable use and ft857d for everything use, the 710 wouldn’t get mobile use nor portable use despite its superior audio quality One day…

hello Peter many thanks for the video, ive recently sold my fdx5000 , it was getting to old for me to move around , after your recommendation i've bought the 710, picking it up today so i will be setting the radio to your brief.. many thanks Peter keep up the good work.
Hi Peter, excellent and very useful video. I've been looking at the FT710 since it came out. I have a sailing boat and intended to operate /MM. I have an FT847 and used it a few times on the boat. I like 40 metres but found the 847 very noisy, even if I back off the rf gain to reduce AGC pumping. At home I run a Flex and 40 metres is a joy by comparison, with an almost silent background. So the FT710 being a full SDR transceiver seems very attractive. A ) it's smaller than the FT847. B) it has the possibility of a much quieter background noise on the lower bands and C) the internal ATU should handle the inverted V dipole that I usually use on the boat. Looks like I'll have to stop off at your shop as I travel South from Derbyshire to Portsmouth.
Hello, and thank you for your fantastic reviews. Does this transceiver cover all the shortwave bands such that I could listen to my favorite SWL such as BBC worldservice, Radio New Zealand, etc?
Great review Peter. Thanks a lot! I fully agree with your assessment. Just a few things to add. The DNR is adjustable. It really makes a lot of difference in how you match the settings to your environment. I am living in an urban area. In most cases I can kill all the interference it creates. Also the mouse operation is a big advantage. You don't have to fiddle with the fingers on the small screen. The ATU is amazing as you said! I never observed a situation with my end fed random length antenna that could not be matched. There is a small disadvantage that should be mentioned. It's the cooling fan that produces significant noise in receiving mode. I really hope that yeasu can fix it with a SW update. In summary I believe the price / performance relation is amazing.
Thank you very much for your great, informative video. Got my FT-710 last week (Upgrading vom Xiegu G90), and I am very happy (had my first SSB QSO 🙂). One thing I still dont get is what the the Data-U is doing? No Documentation about this. 73 de Roman HB9XBK
Nice to see a bigger photo of it. Online you can barely see an enlarged photo to see it's buttons. Thanks for making this video. How much power does it draw?
im looking at buying the ft710 without the speaker because i have a couple of kenwood and yaesu speakers but do you have to pay post on the radio if you live in the uk thanx and great video
Looks good. I need an excuse to get one. I have 4 rigs . FT450d, Ft100d with faults. Ft857d latest buy. old brand new rig and a G90. Also a FT200. Not on air enough since retirement. Life changed some what. A remarkable radio.
You mention that Yaesu could rest on their laurels after producing this model, but I would guess they're already planning the next improvements! Their corporate culture isn't one of resting on their laurels... I've owned some of their equipment for more than 30 years and it has stood the test of time and use. Nice review by the way! Good Luck!
ive have an icom 7300 and a 7610. i recently picked up a 710. for the money and £85 cash back yep its a bargain. But for those that say its the end for the 7300 i disagree. the 7300 has a lot of feature the 710 doesn't have . the 7300 antenna swr analyser, band edge beep that can be edited and ft8 pre-set button. the 710 does have the atas feature which was the only reason i got one. so the 710 sits in the truck. but for those people buying a radio don't follow fashion do your research first. that bit extra cash gets a few more features. i'll be honest 2 things i hate on the 710. no band edge beep and the 70mhz select.
Im still leary about the full SDR rigs. But im an old timer that holds ( my wife claims hoards 🙄) radios my good ole double conversion and triple conversion radios. But after seeing this video, i might just sell some of my dusty old superhets. Not giving up my IC-746pro or my FTDX-3000 though . But this is a fantastic little rig. I just wonder if it will last as long as some of my old icoms and Kenwood rigs..
@@watersstanton well I bought one Peter, I really enjoyed your presentation of the FT-710 - especially for the display and audio, I bought the field version, because I have a SP-2000 filtered speaker so at home , the FT-710 feeds that speaker and lives next to my trusty albeit now a boat anchor FTDX-3000d . fantastic little rig!
Hi Peter, excellent video as always. How would you compare the FT-710 AESS to the Icom 7300? If you wanted to purchase one or the other now, which would you choose? Thanks for your input. Frank Mercurio (W8FXM)
To be honest you would not be disappointed with either. But the Ft-710 is Cheaper and higher up the Sherwood Engineering chart. The Yaesu does benefit from being a more recent design. But Icom fans will probably stay royal!
I have the FTdx10 and IC-705. The Yaesu has a better receiver when conditions are tough but I find the Icom user interface easier. Both are great radios. If you care about working weak stations in a crowded band, external display, etc you’ll like the Yaesu. If you enjoy rag chewing with your buddies or even chasing DX, the 7300 might be more fun. As Peter says, you can’t really go wrong. If you can, find a way to try them at Field day or visiting a friend.
The FT"DX" 101MP, you quote as the top of Sherwood's List is NOT THE OLD RADIO, ( FT101MP ), ....The FT"DX" 101MP are equal to the FT"DX" 101D....they are both NEW flagship radio's from Yaesu and share top spot on the list. In Fact the flex radio is disqualified ( read the foot notes at the bottom of the list. It was not a stock radio....it had been heavily changed) so the FT710 AESS is #3 on the best radio's list !. I also saw a statement that said EQ was available for receive. I know there is a bass - Mid - treble available....where's the EQ access ?
Thanks my eyesight isn’t as good as it once was. I recently purchased a G90 after watching several Videos raving about it once I finally powered it up unfortunately I realized I just read the screen. Now seeking a replacement Radio. Especially like that the 710 might be connected to an external monitor with larger screen. Appreciate your detailed explanation of other features of 710. 73 Steve AA4SH
Thank you for the very informative video. You have such an eloquent, enjoyable presentation style. I could sit and watch videos you have made all day long.
I would not recommend converting to HDMI as this may damage the radio through feedback signals, DVI D is simply a video output to a monitor. This issue has been discussed on other channels. I use an old monitor with a DVI D connection.
At the bottom of the screen the selection SPAN adjusts the frequency range of the waterfall to make it longer or shorter and the EXPAND selection increases the hight of the 2D waterfall.
I'm disappointed with only one antenna socket, It adds £100 onto the price for 4, 6metre and HF selection. I'll stick with my TS590SG. But I do like the parametric equaliser, and a capable atu, which looks equivalent to Kenwoods performance.
my eyes are getting old too and when i see a radio tranceiver that uses sdr, i ask if you candrive it with software such as sdr# cubicsdr etc, as it would say my eyes muc stress if i could drive it on my computer. also if it's touch screen.
There's a risk to Yaesu and Icom of shooting themselves in the foot. You produce a budget RF sampling SDR radio with specs that are close to or even exceed their own conventional superhet based radios, and who is going to buy radios like the FT101, IC-7850 or TS-990? Perhaps that explains why several manufacturers are ceasing production of their flagship transceivers. I know it's only a receiver but the SDRPlay RSPdx, pound for pound, dollar for dollar is the best radio purchase I ever made! The receiver is superb! The days of requiring a high end box costing many thousands of pounds, to get high end performance are drawing to a close.
Just got me a 710 about 2 weeks ago. Gotta get me a monitor. I really like this radio. Hopefully will last me a long time. I was just using an 891 and now I use it for portable.. The 710 is much more convenient.
Nice radio, but think the "AESS" is a bit of a gimmick. This is something easily achieved by a good two-way loudspeaker ( or two loudspeakers) and an external adjustable crossover. Even a multiband parametric eq will give you what you need....
I agree it's well spec'd and very good value for money, but it's Windows centric. Good luck trying to work with Linux or Android. I made that mistake and there is no way of upgrading the firmware without a Windows PC. When you add the cost of a cheap PC it's no longer so cost effective. I simply do not understand what Yaesu are thinking of. I'm guessing they are tied in to Microsoft by contract.
I was an avid Yaesu user since the 70s. We used them in the military. It has driven me away from Yeasu. There is no reason why they cannot allow ftp telnet etc into their system. It has to be a Microsoft edict.
Sherwood? who really goes by that... What is "an all time best per former? I certainly don't, I have the SUNSDR2 DX and it is more versatile than the 101d which I sold after two months.
It looks like your comment might rank as low as your radio did on the list. I understand your anger. Being an unpaid beta tester would make me bitter too. Luckily Peter shared a link to the list so you don't make the same mistake again.
I have got my 710 for almost a year now in operation. The AESS in my view is a marketing joke. Once you connect the 710 to a real hifi system with amp and loudspeakers, you will be super amazed what kind of sound it can produce. Just go with the field version and an external audio system!

I have similar problem. FT-719 with external screen really is the answer.
Thank you for the very informative video. You have such an eloquent, enjoyable presentation style. I could sit and watch videos you have made all day long.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you
looking for a radio that has full features to take on drive in POTA trips. How do you think this radio would hold up if properly cared for?
It’ ideal for portable work. Go fir the “ Field.”
Make sure to apply the March 2023 firmware update for DSP to fix DNR issue.
The radio was already updated.
I would love a link or information where and what adapter you used to convert the dvi d video output to hdmi ? Thanks in advance de 2e0njk . .
Amazon, there are lots of them.
I would not recommend converting to HDMI as this may damage the radio through feedback signals, DVI D is simply a video output to a monitor. This issue has been discussed on other channels. I use an old monitor with a DVI D connection.
How do you make the signals longer/higher in the 2D waterfall?
At the bottom of the screen the selection SPAN adjusts the frequency range of the waterfall to make it longer or shorter and the EXPAND selection increases the hight of the 2D waterfall.
Great video
Thanks!
Interesting but isn’t the AESS just like an active crossover?
Could do this on any rig.
Crossovers are normally fixed in both frequency and amounts fed to each speaker. With AESS both can be changed.
Ham bands only ?SDA but not a general coverage receiver ?
General coverage receiver.
I'm disappointed with only one antenna socket, It adds £100 onto the price for 4, 6metre and HF selection. I'll stick with my TS590SG. But I do like the parametric equaliser, and a capable atu, which looks equivalent to Kenwoods performance.
Thank You.
You're welcome
I was impress with the 710, i found the AESS wasn't worth it and sounded better with just a decent external speaker
I believe AESS is still active with all external speakers. Check the facility out with your speaker.
Yes the AESS gimmick works with any speaker.
Do you ship rigexperts to the philippines?
my eyes are getting old too and when i see a radio tranceiver that uses sdr, i ask if you candrive it with software such as sdr# cubicsdr etc, as it would say my eyes muc stress if i could drive it on my computer. also if it's touch screen.
Thank you for a great review! 73 VE3GUE
Glad it was helpful!
The field version does not have the AESS in the menu
Yaesu UK told me it does.
Are they wrong?
Имеет и прекрасно работает!
Look for yourself...if it does it will be in the bottom right corner in the main menu@@watersstanton
Im saving to get one, only need $300 more and we back on the air. 😂
Keep saving.
A lot of truth there!
15:55 Look how that button gets damaged.
It’s a button! there are lots of them!
Just got me a 710 about 2 weeks ago. Gotta get me a monitor. I really like this radio. Hopefully will last me a long time. I was just using an 891 and now I use it for portable.. The 710 is much more convenient.
Quite annoying how hw keeps calling it a 71 o its a zero, not an o.
Agent “Double O 7” !!
@@watersstanton Simplicity!
Nice radio, but think the "AESS" is a bit of a gimmick. This is something easily achieved by a good two-way loudspeaker ( or two loudspeakers) and an external adjustable crossover. Even a multiband parametric eq will give you what you need....
But ,if you feel you need it, it is better to have it built in rather than extra external items.
The only downside is that the buttons arent illuminated 😞
Smart Phone to the rescue!
No signal averaging either.
No tuner & No decoder?? No thank you! I’ll stick w my ftdx1200 or buy another FTDX 10.
I have a Windows PC but struggle to use it as I am Apple based!
I was an avid Yaesu user since the 70s. We used them in the military. It has driven me away from Yeasu. There is no reason why they cannot allow ftp telnet etc into their system. It has to be a Microsoft edict.
No musical intro!
Sorry!
Y should have made the FT710 Field out of the gate. I prefer headphones, so the extra speaker was useless.
Why not sell the speaker on eBay.
Hintz Club
LMAO you purchased the lead off ebay , wonder why that was your shop too expensive lol
i needed a particular length made up
Y needs to put the 710 in a mobile setup.
Sherwood? who really goes by that... What is "an all time best per former?
I certainly don't, I have the SUNSDR2 DX and it is more versatile than the 101d which I sold after two months.
Check the link below the video.
I found it to be very good and it was one of the big plusses in terms of recovered audio compared with other radios.
Just try it once with a separate hifi audio system for comparison Peter.
@@hugothales4902 So what you're saying is that an entire hifi audio system sounds better than a 150 dollar speaker?
How did you connect to external amp. Does the 710 have line out jack or are you just connecting to it's external speaker out jack?
