  • In this video I will show you how to bridle your horse when using a hackamore. I use a hackamore in the winter when I do get the time to ride. I prefer using it in winter just because no horse wants a cold bit in their mouth. Enjoy!

    Good point on the cold bit in the winter..many a time here in Lander Wyoming..I have always called the type of bridle.. a MECHANICAL HACKAMORE.. I like it.

    I really like the hackamore method. It obviously is much more comfortable for the horse then a bit. I learned about this type of bridle from a book as a child but we didn't have one on our farm so I could try it.

      Not really. A correctly fitting bit used by a good rider does not hurt the horses mouth. If the bit does not fit correctly, is too severe, or the rider yanks on the horse's mouth, then that is a problem and your horse (nor you) will be happy. Do NOT use a mechanical hackamore like the one in the video. It is very severe (not the chain and the long levers on the sides. That can break the horse's jaw. If you don't like a bit, then use a bosal and get someone competent in how to use one to teach you. Bosals are not used the same as a bridle with a bit.

      Janet Hunter they can't break the horses jaw if they're fitted correctly and used how they're supposed to be used. I don't know much about bosal but I've seen a couple horses skin rubbed off from them .

    The only reason I think it's useful to have the halter on beneath the bridle is if you're out working cows or on a long trail ride, and you need to tie them somewhere. It's pretty easy to just slip the bridle off and still be able to tie them safely :) Just a thought!

      great video! i just started using a hackamore on my 26 year old horse Duchess because she is one of those horses that are very unconfortable with a bit in their mouth. so far she hasn't responded to it at all, any tips ? but surprisingly my 4 year old Nugget is responding very well. how do you get your horse to respond so well to the hackamore?

      Yes. Thank you. Some people tie reins to poles but then the horse runs the risk of breaking his jaw if he spooks and pulls.

    It seemed overall that it was all a comfortable, loose fit around the nose, and I think it looked like the curb chain was pretty loose, also. I'm kind of new at this. I have a one ear head stall, but it doesn't have a throat latch built into it. What do you think of one eared headstalls? Btw...great video!

    • @janethunter4553
      @janethunter4553 7 років тому

      One eared headstalls are fine. Use what you like--unless your horse likes to rub it off!
      Note that even if the chain appears to be loose, those levers on the sides are dangerous and could break your horse's jaw. Do not use a mechanical hackamore like the one shown in the video.

    Wish more people knew about the bit=wrinkle thing. No wrinkle is needed. You want it to be just barely touching the corners of the mouth. I have seen horses that are used to it being tight seem to not like it loose, but give it time and they will get used to it. Perhaps if the horse is used to 2 wrinkles then go down to 1 wrinkle at first for a bit.

      KC Silverwing no.. then the horse has to work to keep the bit in its mouth, it clanks on its teeth, and they can get their tongue over the bit which will cause problems.

      2 wrinkles are needed so the horse cant put its tongue over the bit and get hurt

    I love those reins were did u get them? I'm going to get a horse soon and I was wondered ring if I should use a hackamore or a bit?

    • @janethunter4553
      @janethunter4553 7 років тому +1

      Hi, Kysaydee. You will want to use the device that your horse has been trained to use. The signals of a rein and a hackamore are different. Both you and the horse need to understand the training method. I also suggest that you work with a trainer unless you have been riding for quite a long time and have had lessons on how to ride correctly.

      You cant just get on any horse with a hackamore, I agree some bits hurt but not all are used horribly. I have two horses and I highly doubt my new mare could be ridden with the hackamore that I use for my gelding . I will eventually use one but you cant just assume you are gonna be able to ride a horse with a hack and if you are pulling hard/er then you would the bit you will do just as much damage if not more that can be caused from a bit.

    • @lauraallen3793
      @lauraallen3793 6 років тому

      Yes, Use what they are used to for a while and feel them out (unless of course it's a super harsh bit as more pain does not create more control, just fear). I have switched a couple horses to hackamores and used all the same signals. I'm also one for staying super light in my hands with no contact at times and focus on body control. The only difference with the hack was a new calm in my horse and more lip licking, otherwise they rode and performed the same as before (western, trail, and hunter jumper). Some horses may be rushy and need some time to learn, but eventually should listen to your body more than anything else. Happy hunting! Very exciting

    Thank you! I am re-learning everything! I love your hackamore, where did you buy it and what is it called? I bought a nice one from Amazon, but the nose-band piece is not as nicely padded as yours is....thank you for the tutorial. It helped alot!!!

      You do not want to get one of those types of mechanical hackamores. The long levers, along with the chain under the chin is very severe and could hurt your horse--or you if the horse reacts badly to it.

    Another reason you put the halter on under the bridle is for lead rein riders so if they are learning to go off lead

    How do you get your bridal on your hackamore?

  • @gerrycoleman7290
    @gerrycoleman7290 8 місяців тому

    That is not a hackamore. It is a mechanical hackamore. Very bad for the horse. Very long leveraged shank. Causing lots of pain. You had it right to begin with. The rope halter is best.

    You should never be telling people to anchor their horses to wall mounts via a head collar or halter around the neck. Think about what you say before you publish it online. This is a huge no no
