    No hate but I would use just about any bit besides a tomb thumb. I would definitely use a shank bit with either a solid mouthpiece or a three piece. Good video on hacks though :)

      YES!!! Mine will run the pattern perfectly in a rope halter with reins after years of horrid bits. Now, rope halter or bosal, TRUE hackamore, mechanical hackamores still produce pain, bosals do not.

    MY horse was ridden in a mule chain(Bike chain bit) with a slight gag and now it doesn't matter what bit you put in his mouth he will run through it. BUT he will ride in a hack or a bosal all day without issues. He even goes with just a neck rope. I've never seen how much happier a horse could be until I finally made the switch after him almost killing me and him a few times with trying to find a good bit for him. It was a instant change almost.

    I ride in an S-hack and I've had some people tell me that it's really harsh and that I shouldn't be using it but my mustang pulls through Halters and bosals and he respects the s-hack and I never have to pull but its reassuring so hear that they're less harsh then other options

    Sweetie I'm SO happy that you ride bitless, but mechanical hackamores are close to as cruel depending on the leverage as a bit. NO metal,, chains,, clips should ever be by a horses face.. And a Tom Thumb is the most cruel of all bits, NEVER use that one! I was the same as you, I thought the Tom Thumb was mild and used it, not true, research how nasty they are, this was confirmed by 2 actual HORSEMEN I know. I went from barrel racing/pole bender in horrid long shanked bits, including that nightmare 'no hit bit' (the one that goes up their face) to riding, bending, racing, whatever in either a TRUE hackamore (bosal, hanger, mecate) or a rope halter with reins. My 2 geldings never worked better than they do WITHOUT any pain implements! It's SO refreshing to see a young female rider who gets it!! But the multi billion dollar tack industry and barn witches across the country will keep pushing bits so it's up to people like us who care about the well being of the horse to educate people on bitless. God Bless You.

    For anyone watching that's confused:
    A tom thumb is far worse mechanically than many other leverage bits. Also, if you're "breaking the horse's jaw" in any leverage bridle, you need to fix your hands. I could put a very long shank hackamore on my mare and be okay, because I'm conscious of how much bridle that is, and she can go off the weight of the rein. Now, would I use that? Absolutely not. I do high-speed events and there's no room for error in something with 9" shanks and no purchase (not to mention that that's an insane amount of overkill). But it wouldn't break her jaw. A Jr. Cowhorse definitely isn't going to break a horse's jaw. But if you've got hands bad enough to HARM a horse in a long shanked hackamore, not even a snaffle is going to be kind in your hands.

      Also, a beetle hack isn't a harsh bridle, but the mechanics of something like a Little S are better for something like barrel racing, as there is better independent rotation in the shanks. A beetle hack is great for going down the trail, though, and some people do barrel race with them.
      I would also like to note that a crossunder-style bitless bridle often will have very poor release. Unlike a leverage-style bridle, which is no longer engaged when the pressure is released, crossunder bridles tend not to completely release. The one in the video (she called it the Indian bosal) is a good example of this. The rope had to be manually fed through the noseband to get it to move. When rein pressure is applied, it will tighten under the jaw. When rein pressure is released, the rope isn't going to want to move. This style of bridle does work well for some horses, though.
      Just be conscious of what you're putting on your horse's face, and don't just listen to one person on the internet.
      Happy trails.

      @@sierrajade7875 Agreed. It's all in the hands. I made an Indian bosal for Thunder the Shire with rope thimbles where the rope slides through, and it releases much better than simple rope loops. I find that a lighter rein will also have a quicker release with such a contraption than a heavier rein. Admittedly I do not ride Thunder in this contraption when I anticipate a lot of pulling or collection, so riding in an Indian bosal during performance events may have a different result than a gentle mosey down some trail. ; )

    Just my opinion... Tom thumb bits are the worse to use than a normal leverage bit. I have used a just about anything on my horses. One horse does great in hack and the other gets warmed up in a snaffle and sometimes ran in a combo bit. I haven't had any problems with them. Plus everything depends on how you ride. If you are too handsy than yeah you can tear a horses mouth up but if you have soft hands you can use any bit or hackamore on a horse and be perfectly fine.

    We use a S Hackamore (exactly like yours) on my daughters paint and she 10x the horse she was with any bit we have tried.

      Rope halter gave my horse a bald spot on her nose, and keep in mind that I ride with light hands , yet they still rubbed on her face because the knots were moving back and forth. Because of that, I'm inclined to try a bosal or a a hackamore that relies more on leverage

    • @gerrycoleman7290
      @gerrycoleman7290 Рік тому

      @@sketchalater4656 Because of the rub marks on the horse means that you do not have soft hands and do not ride with slack in the reins. A traditional hackamore operates essentially as does the rope halter. You mention 'hackamore', I believe you are referring to a mechanical hackamore that has leverage. You do not need leverage to effectively control a horse. It is not the fault off the tack, it is you. I would recommend the two knot rope halter not the 4 knot.

    Your snaffle bit is heaps softer than the hackamores you showed. Personally, if I wanted to go bitless, I'd use little more than a sidepull or rope halter.

  • @kristinepenard2725
    @kristinepenard2725 7 років тому

    Okay this isn't a hate comment. Just to get that out of the way, however the bit where the ride pulls on the reins and it's all attached, that is a draw bit. I don't think any bit is bad. But that's my opinion. They are tools. And each one has a different purpose. I just don't agree that you hate a combo but itself, I agree that they are stronger bits, but that's rider error if they are ripping on a horses mouth. I use a hack myself. But I don't hate bits because people are stupid and rip on a horses mouth. It's not the bits fault. They are effective and as fair as anything else. Just needs to be a good rider.

    • @karenlazenby6440
      @karenlazenby6440 3 роки тому

      The bad part is, 90% of riders DO pull and rip, have no understanding of timing and feel and most 'trainers' (barn witches) know nothing of the 2 either so they cheat with pain implements. You're so right, it's all in the rider, though I would never again put a piece of metal in my horses mouths, NEVER again. When I put one in my mouth and pulled, without the pulling on my poll or chin, it was PAINFUL. And with a leverage bit, every 1 pound pulled gives the horse 10 pounds of pressure. You see how heavy handed so many riders are, can you imagine the pain?!

      A bosal is the traditional hackamore. It isn't a mechanical hack, but it is a hack.
