Milling Rough Lumber: Surface 4 Sides S4S
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 жов 2018
- I'm back! I took a 9-month break from making videos to prepare for the arrival of our new-born, Eleanor Claire Huynh. To get back into the swing of things I wanted to share a more comprehensive video on how I mill rough lumber to surfaced 4-sides (S4S) in preparation for use in a project.
That's one hell of a machine for joining and planing!
No doubt! I thought the same thing. And then I looked up how much it costs. Ouch.
Dude, this is a great vid on how to square stock, I appreciate you taking the time to do this to help us novices. Thanks for the vid.
Wow this is a great video. So many people have covered this topic but you managed to explain the process in great detail while still keeping it simple and understandable. Thanks for making this!
Thank you for the great video and explanations. I just purchased my first batch of rough lumber for a project. Until now I have always purchased S4S lumber and your video explained the how and why perfectly.
That was by far the best board dimensioning video out there, I never thought of removing an equal amount from each side while thicknessing, but makes total sense. Thank you.
You have a gift for explaining things. Well done! Thank you. Beautiful shop by the way.
As someone who just bought rough lumber for the first time this video was very helpful! Learned a lot. Especially the part about planing both sides equal amounts for moisture concerns. Thanks!
Congratulations on your new baby. I laughed when you said things are more stable now. You are going to experience new levels of love, of wonder, of fear, and of uncertainty. That is parenting.
Thanks for the tips and for explaining your rationale for your milling process.
The Hammer looks like an awesome machine. It is far beyond my needs, my space, and my budget.
The Hammer was also far beyond my needs and budget several years ago. Things lined up for me and I'm now able to afford the Hammer, but I was happy with my previous setup as well.
New subscriber here. Parenthood is beautiful! Congrats!!
Thank you for showing and focusing on safety! Love that you showed your planer was disconnected.
First time I've come across you and I gotta say - WOW. SO much information. So much wisdom. I'm sure after many hours and many lost boards/projects I could have arrived at the same info, but it's awesome to hear/learn it from someone who's been there. For instance, NEVER would have thought to plain the other side to induce symmetrical moisture exposure/reduce chance of future bowing. That kind of info was EVERYWHERE in this vid. Even though this vid is a few months old, I've subbed and can't wait to watch more.
Welcome back! And congrats on the new born! You just secured another full time gig (and then some) for the next 20 yrs or so. :)
Thank you! Haha! I hear that!
Congratulations on the little one. Just discovered your site and thank you. You did an excellent job of explaining s4s. Please keep the quality of the videos coming.

Excellent information here, especially describing how you are holding down the wood. I'm still trying to wrap my head around why a jointer works.
Congratulations! Glad you are back.
Thank you! I'm happy to be back!
Happy Birthday Eleanor! I just discovered your channel by accident. I am just setting up shop- also in Alabama. I thought you did a very nice job on the video. I am subscribing to see what wisdom I can gain from you. I am certainly not a master craftsman, but I enjoy milling my own lumber and designing and building projects with my limited knowlege and tool collection.
Welcome back and congratulations on the new addition to your family.
I like the way you explained the way to do this, also great machine. wish I had the space to have one.
Thank you, Anthony! I'll be honest, while I've been doing this for a number of years now, is not the easiest to put into words.
Great video. Congrats on new member of your family! Hope to see more of videos.

Thank you! It feels good to be back making videos. I'm a little rusty but it's all coming back to me.
Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for your courteous reply. I am sure the rust will fade away with the passage of time. Kind regards.

Dude, I clicked on this video because I wanted to brush up on dimensioning boards since it's been a while for me. I saw the "Alabama Woodworker" intro and thought: "Oh, boy! Wonder what kind of backwoods hilarity I'm about to see." Then the intro fades to you and I was like: "What?! That's Huy!" I made Lori watch the intro and we both just laughed. Seriously, you have to be the most talented and well rounded guy we know! Great video and belated congrats on that sweet baby girl!
missed you. welcome back and congratulations
Thank you, Robert! I appreciate the support.
Great explanation of the jointing and planing process and sequence, excellent diction, and what a machine! Cute tiny person! This is my first viewing of you on UA-cam, and find you to be one of the best at explaining woodworking. Thanks

big hug from Brasil Said Choucair
Such a satisfying video 😴
Nice. I’ve been following you on Instagram for a short while now and didn’t realise you had a UA-cam channel. I’ve seen a few videos relating to this videos subject, but I like your pragmatic and clear approach to the task. You’re a great teacher.
As a random thing, I thought for a split second that your eye protection was actually some vintage fighter pilot goggles.
Thank you for the kind words, Chris. I really do try to be pragmatic. I'm not always successful but I try. Haha! They are a pretty basic set of 3M goggles.
Welcome back! And congratulations... I wondered why I haven't seen any new videos and now we know. See, you were missed...
Congrats!
Welcome back,
Glad you're back! Congrats on the special addition to the family!
Thank you, Doug! We're really happy to have her.
Very nice explanation Huy. I know you mentioned the length of the video being a possible concern. It was timed right with the well thought out information I expect from you. :)
I appreciate the encouragement. Thank you, Ryan.
You have the safest setup ever seen
"I like to use a jigsaw." = A phrase I thought I would never hear uttered aloud. I have one, but I HATE using it. Congrats on the new future shop assistant, btw.
My first thought would have been to use my drop saw!!!!
Very good video, thanks and subscribed
Welcome back and congrats. Love the combo machine. Pls share details. I’ve been thinking of getting something similar.

There are a lot of Huys in the world. A somewhat common name. Thank you for following along.
Nice machine!!
The Jointer.... Is a plainer????!!! What is this madness! How is this 5 years old and the 1st time I have seen this!???? GENIUS!!!! My brain just broke!!!
🧠
Thank you for commenting...it brought this to the top of my "to view list" I like that planer/jointer option
Adorable baby there (over 2 now lol)
That hammer machine looks great. And negatives? Kinda want a wider planet but my little 12” has suited me fine so far.
This was explained great!
New sub!
