to be fair they've covered most of these songs in some way. either PTPX have done a full cover (recording or in concert), included the song in one of their medleys/evolutions or Superfruit (Scott and Mitch) have covered it on their channel. there are only a handful of songs in this that they've never sung before - like Bad Guy or Old Town Road.
True…and there’s 5 minds working on the melody on every song! But they’ve covered and are familiar with a TON of songs if you consider the diversity of music they listen to individually. I don’t think they passed on one song!
Between PTX themselves and Superfruit (Mitch and Scott's side project 2012-2017), they have actually done about 80% of these (including a fantastic cover of Can You Feel the Love Tonight?). They sometimes need to hear it as well before they get, that's why Mitch sometimes warbles/screeches the intro or the hook first, and then the rest of them pick it up. Of course if they learned it for one of their "Evolution" medleys, they may not know the whole song well. Among the ones for which they have done a full-length version: Cheerleader, Royals, Sweater Weather, Radioactive, Where Are You Christmas, Can't Hold Us (and Scott did that rap), Oh Come All Ye Faithful, New Rules, Shallow, Jolene (which they recorded with Dolly Parton), Havana, Say Something, Sounds of SIlence, Carol of the Bells, Problem, Somebody That I Used to Know, White Winter Hymnal ... the list goes on!
I think sometimes they hesitate too because their own arrangement is just slightly different from the usual, and their own version is so deeply integrated to their brain that it takes an extra second to retrieve it based on the title alone.
Did you just say you had no idea about Jolene by Dolly Parton? That, my friend, is inexcusable. Dolly Parton is a national treasure and broke glass ceilings constantly. PTX for their 3rd Grammy for their collab with her for Jolene.
They did cover a lot of those songs, but their ability to recall them and start singing together was still pretty amazing. Their awareness of so many songs and types of music is really impressive.
The Jolene song that you didn't know is one they did with Dolly pardon. It is her song and older than most of them but they did an amazing job and I think they won an award for it but don't quote me on that.
While they had already sung most of these songs, you aren't wrong that they are capable of throwing together arrangements. One of my very favorite random PTX videos is this one - it was some livestream they were doing back in the day... Scott was randomly clapping, Kevin asked if it was Call Your Girlfriend, Mitch and Scott started singing it and basically they just all fell in... They've covered about half of these already. Between PTX and Superfruit (Mitch & Scott), they've done probably 65% of them.
As far as I can tell, after they killed it, the channel hasn't played this game with anyone else.
