Hot tip (that most people might already know): keyboard shortcuts such as 'Ctrl/Cmd + M' and 'Ctrl/Cmd + A' can quicken the process of setting your background colour. Use the former to duplicate a blank green slide prior, before making your slides. The latter allows you to select all slides (blank or otherwise) to change their bg colour to green simultaneously.

The amount of powtoon and videoscribe videos that are out there outnumbers anything I have ever seen lmao. But they are great basic animation tools to get your point across. My topic is really really complicated and shortening it to 3 minutes has been the hardest part so far. And I only got 8 days left RIP
That sounds daunting, all the best man! 8 days should be fine if you don't get sidetracked. Yeap shortening is hard, sometimes it's better to sacrifice bits of information than the flow of the video as a whole. Gotta be ruthless lol

It's a very very hard way to do it actually :) You can use a program called camtasia to make those animations. It's much easier and faster. You can access a ton of tutorial videos on youtube as well. By the way I love your videos!

Instead of using the green screen i think you can just use keynote, because they might give u the same intended effect. Thats how i am doing the animation part for my video. But i appreciate the extra information :)

Hey Deanna, I've been binging yours and Hillary's advice videos on the BJC like crazy, and they've been really helpful for forming good notes on the competition so thank you! I've been struggling to pick a topic, however, and I was wondering if something like quantum foam is too speculative of a topic to make a video about since it hasn't officially been proven yet? I feel like I'm overthinking this step but I also don't a bad topic to lead me astray.

Quantum foam sounds really intriguing, I just checked out NASA's description of it and that already sounds like a worthy video script science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2015/31dec_quantumfoam - I understand your concerns about potentially speculative topics though, and my suggestion is to think of known topics that you want to know more about because chances are other people would be curious about those topics too.
@@deansodium Gotcha, I thought it would make for an interesting video too, but it might be iffy. I'll try to find a more known and proven topic to focus on (I think that's what you were trying to say lol). Also, thanks for the advice! Thanks for the Advice videos :) They're reall really helpful and answer a lot of questions. I discovered BJC around 10 days ago and I decided to enter xD. Rip me I get 8 days to make an animation in after effects which I'v never even used before lol but oh well guess I'll be submitting last minute too. Hmm. Last Question: for this year my topic is the berlin patient and basically immunity to hiv caused by a rare genetic mutation as well as HIV works itself. Would that be a good topic (in aspects regardless of difficulty)?

When you do peer to peer, do you have to open the video you are reviewing on youtube, or does it just appear on the Breakthrough website? Hi Gabriel! Your video will be embedded and scored on the Breakthrough website for peer-to-peer, so chances are your description won't be seen then. Great video though, by the way :)

I have an iPhone but not an Apple computer, so I can't use iMovie on my computer. :'( Is there a program compatible with a Windows or Chrome Book computer that the green screen/power point trick can be used on?
I'm currently using Adobe Premiere Pro on a Windows computer at work, and the green screen trick works on it too! I haven't experimented as much with it beyond a few graphics though, so it might actually be a lot more powerful than iMovie. It's not free but you can get a week-long free trial here: www.adobe.com/products/premiere/free-trial-download.html. It's not ideal, but I believe if you subscribe for a monthly plan after the trial ends and cancel within 14 days you actually get your money back.

Hi Grace! Yep I just used iMovie, it's a bit of a hassle if you have a lot of photos but much more convenient to have it all in one place :)

Hi Deanna. I had a question I was hoping you had the answer to. Would using bought royalty-free vector images from Adobe Stock footage in your animations be against contest rules? If it is not, is there a specific process to show that you bought the license for usage? Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Hey Aniketh! If you buy them I’m pretty sure you can use them - I used royalty free music from incompetech.com for instance, and basically if you make it past the peer-to-peer round Breakthrough will email you for a list of your sources for verification - that’s when I sent in my credits :)

Yo! Yup you can submit up to 5 questions, the organizers will email you if you're a finalist, and you can find out if you're a winner through an announcement they make at a Molecular Frontiers conference (you can watch it live on their Facebook page). Otherwise they'll also email you sometime later if you win :) I got a medal and an iPad!

Any tips for animating on android?
Hi Marissa! I’ve personally tried VLLO for editing, and some have recommended CapCut and KineMaster as well (all available on Android I believe). I’m not sure if they have the same flexibility of animation as doodling your own path on PowerPoint, but you can check out some UA-cam tutorials for their features.
I have a doubt related to the topic for the challenge. Would be glad if you would be able to help me out. I have chosen a topic with equal weight on life sciences, physics and math. In such a case what should I opt on the options? It would be quite good for others to know someone's topic, but, I cannot be Buddha and sacrifice all my efforts. Hopeful for an early response from you!!!
Hi Arman! Wow your concept sounds really interdisciplinary - that's awesome. While the topic might have equal weight in different disciplines, is there one discipline you plan to discuss the most in your video? For example quantum biology can be counted in both life sciences and physics, but if most of the video is going to explain the quantum part, then it could just be classified under physics. If you're going to split your video equally between explaining all three disciplines there might not be enough time so that's something to consider as well. Hey Kanushi! I included some animations from Ted Ed (different from Ted Talks) which fall under UA-cam's standard policy. I would recommend sticking to royalty free sources (e.g. pexels.com) because copyright is complicated!

100th comment! Also, if you have powerpoint 2016, the MORPH transition is a powerful tool. If checks consecutive slides for similar objects and morphs it into them. Hey Avinash! You can change the filter under google images to "labeled for reuse" for photos that you can use, or get photos from unsplash.com (totally free for use). When I passed peer-to peer Breakthrough asked me for a list of all the sources I used, so I would definitely keep a list of links to every photo/video etc. that I found online. If you screenshot images, it's still taken from those videos so you should still state the video as a source if you're asked for your sources. If you're worried about violating copyright, I really recommend making your own animations using stopmotion or whiteboard drawings. Hope that helps!

From my understanding, we can use source clips
1. for non-profit educational purposes
2. that are fact-based
3. that form only a small part of the original video (and our use of the clip brings new meaning to it)
4. if it does not harm the owner's ability to profit
You'll just have to mention these references during the Verification Process (the round after Peer-to-Peer)

For creativity, I actually referred to ads because their whole purpose is to grab attention and persuade you in a short amount of time. In general I think if you make your audience question or want to know what happens next, you're on the right track :)
