Unnecessary overthinking and overspending in my opinion. You can edit 8k videos even on the base model M2 8RAM so 16RAM was more than enough, and for the time that resolution becomes the norm I'm pretty sure most people will be on their 3rd+ workstation upgrade already. Even 4k youtube videos have been on the edge of overkill for 13 years and I don't see that changing anytime soon. People let that 1400MB/s SSD benchmarks and clickbait youtubers like Max tech get in their heads too much, but in the real world it's a really powerful machine that will last many many years. And it's so cheap you won't even care about it holding value in 6+ years, most people will be tempted to buy a new one before it starts lagging with the same "future proofing" thoughts and that's how Apple makes their profits lol.

Not only is 8k not going mainstream anytime soon, but because of how much memory and bandwidth streaming 4K takes, UA-cam is about to have to charge to watch videos in 4K at which point most people will be fine with just reg FHD

I agree, if I get two years out of a 600 - 799 computer, I'm good. Even then, if it gets replaced it will then be relegated to media server as it get replaced. My machines get a total of 5 to 10 years this way. Typically in "use and production" for 2 years, then becomes unit that serves, not a daily driver, but super useful and in service. I then typically donate the one that the other replaces to a Maker Space or school. I think a good dictional pick, do you need to edit video? Do you use a lot of effects/transitions? Do you multitask ALOT? Do you care about time? For me its for light editing, I am not a heavy multitasker (premier, aftereffect, PS, AI all running at same time type), I don't have massive edits and effects, and I do not mind waiting a few more minutes to save 50%. A MUST is 16 GB regardless. Also, I just got a bottom hub, with M.2 1 TB drive and paid 150.00. Smarter upgrade than paying for upgraded, faster, storage from Apple.

I have researched this extensively lately: 1. Denoise is GPU constrained, so more GPU core will do better, 2. Macs sucks at denoise anyway, so a professional channel said they moved to half PC from Mac, 3. Disk speed is not a constraint on 4k video editing, I moved finalcut library and output all to an external SanDisk extreme at 500MB/s speed, no impact on speed at all, 4. In the end, you can get 2TB external Thunderbolt 4 SSD for about $300 at 2700MB/s same as internal SSD speed so definitely no need to upgrade storage

So the question I have is have you shifted from your initial plan on having a homework computer for the kids - OR, is another computer for you? I think its obvious isn't it. Using your analogy of do you drive the little Honda or the Corvette? - You are already "Driving the Corvette" with the M1 MacBook Pro specked up as a treat to yourself. How can you ever go back to the Honda and getting the "driving" experience to put a smile on your face. It ain't going to happen. In reality the M2 Mac mini with 16gb Ram is perfect for your kids and isn't going to break and should last 5-8 years before it becomes a dinosaur - (even the base 256 SSD and 8GB Ram should suffice). Save your money and upgrade to a MacBook Pro M3 Chipped model when it arrives. That will edit multiple layers of 6-8k video. Now that will put a smile on your face. Just my opinion Scott.

I use the AGPTEK dock for my Mac Mini and its fantastic, it has a slot for an SSD drive built in. However I don't recommend installing programs to the external SSD. Always install your applications like Logic Pro and all the AU/VST plugins on the internal SSD, and keep the external SSD for content such as large orchestral sample libraries, piano libraries, etc. Most plugins (including Native Instruments) will let you define specific paths for content libraries.

Or may it be better to buy a macbook pro 2019 with 16gb and 512? I’m overwhelmed ☹️

If you go Mac Mini I would go for the Pro. You will get the 16 tb of ram and the 4 ports. The ssd is also faster. Now for the MacBook Pro look into the 16in M1 to save so $. I got one at near release and they dropped the price on those. I would stay away from the 256 ssd to slow and to small. 512 is good and buy external ssd. The last question is desktop or laptop. All depends on how you will use it. Do you already have a good monitor etc…

What would you recommend for 8-10 hours of video conferencing--5 days a week? Do I need extra RAM to keep the computer cooler? Does it make sense to buy the base M2pro or stick with the M2? I am currently using a MacBook Pro with a 1.4 quad i5 with 8gb of RAM with Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645 1536 MB. It gets so hot I cannot have it on my lap at times. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Any m chip would be enough for your tasks in my opinion. So even a second hand m1 mini would be a great option.

An iPad would be better honestly, the iPad air, Mini 6 or even the 10. All can be had for around $400 right now.
You need not worry about the cooling or ram because Apple iOS sips energy and works more efficient.

You have to future proof for all the %$#@^! software upgrades. Moving from Davinci Resolve 16 to 18 it called for an intel gpu upgrade on my already highly upgraded Dell Precision 6800 laptop, but intel no longer supports the intel gpu and it's hard on the motherboard.
For some perspective, the first computer I bought back in 1995, was going to be all I'll ever need, single core 128 ram, floppy disc, VGA monitor, lol. It was 2k.
Now you can get the M2 Pro max 32k ram all the cores and 512 ssd for, 2K. I'm getting a minisopuru hub that will hold a crucial 2T NVME ssd for that project editing storage. another $200. It's all I ever need, lol.
Did you know the wifi antenna is on the bottom of the M2? That's why I got the side mount hub.
I'm editing 4k 360 video. Well I'm trying. The Mini m2 pro max is in the mail.

It's looking as if it's going to have to be 16gb 512 minimum if I want to use it for music production. Pro the sweet spot for the connectivity.
I was so hoping to get there for less £'s, but have to look at it as a multi-year investment.
I'm not a pro, but running multi apps and vst plugins is necessary and nothing gets in the way of creative workflow more than cpu hangups on my now aging imac. It makes me not want to start anything sometimes.
Thought about going cheaper with a PC, but all my DL's are mac. I do much prefer the mac Ui though. It's easy on the eye, simplified and more user intuitive to me.
I'm probably in the same boat as most, when I worry about getting something that is not enough. I don't want something that is overly overkill for my needs, but just at least to have ample headroom for what I want to do without seeing that spinning beachball!
    Good luck with today's delivery!

Thanks. So far my export tests via FCP the export time differences are small. However The m2 pro will last me longer and I like the 2 extra USBc ports.

I always buy pros spending lots of money , but never use it to the fullest those extra ports😃and end of wasting lots of money unecessarily getting overhypes with pros when not needed.
Hence decided not to waste money when not needed and ordered regular M2 mac mini with 24GB RAM , 512 GB SSD , as i use lots of apps and keep it opened for faster works.
Even i am sure this specs will be more than enough for Editing 4K.
I feel completely unecessary to buy the PRO M2 mac mini and overkilled.
Regarding Future proof, every year tech changes.. so this is a never ending process.
