    You should look at the fast turbo VW drag bugs and see their rear wing solutions. Very similar situation. Look at the Ron Loomis (RLR) rear wings for a very popular one.

    Damn. I was thinking that a Chevy Monza would be good since you had some aerodynamically challenged cars and then you got the Sunbird.
    Next I was thinking of an Amazon, but this is brilliant and good save! The car is in good condition and the parts are available. As you may be aware, Volvo enthusiast have a loyal following. Having separate rear fenders (wings) means that these can be made or bought in fiberglass too. I am a big Volvo fan and a 4200 Vortec fan. While the 6 cylinder Volvo engine would be awesome, it would require more $$$. The Swedish-American combination is the best bet by far.
    I guess you will have to let some other projects sit to get on this Volvo to get to the finish line. I am subscribed and will be waiting for each new episode. By the way, there is no end to the cars that I, and probably many of your viewers, dream up to put this 4200 Vortec into.

    In regard to aero, if you haven't already look up Julian Edgar on youtube. He has tons of excellent videos on aero. Based on what I've learned from his videos you'll be pretty good with an undertray and a rear spoiler. Probably right above that trunk opening, but you'll need to ensure you have attached flow over the rear to the spoiler. This will back up the airflow and increase pressure on the rear both reducing lift, and reducing drag by the forward component that high pressure at the rear can generate. The big thing will be smoothing airflow under the car, especially preventing turbulent air under the engine bay and rear suspension. Turbulent air at the back of the car can act like a wall in the back causing air to stack up under the car and create lift and drag. Think of that turbulence as increasing your frontal area.

    @russellzacharias3535 2 роки тому +1

    You do have some basis for ideas from what is already being done with this car (Swedish drag videos shown) so that should be a help.
    Is there a formula related to frontal area regarding chopping a top?
    Is it just a matter of doing the math and seeing if the result is worth the effort? For example is it worth going from a 2" chop to a 3" chop?
    Or is it more about how all the various shapes contribute to the total frontal area, as in what a more upright windshield angle would do?

    • @Calvin-Nelson
      @Calvin-Nelson  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah. You basically will take the change in frontal area and plug that in. I doubt the coefficient of drag would change a whole lot. We aren't allowed to do a chop top for the class I want to participate in.

    • @RLRSwanson
      @RLRSwanson 2 роки тому +1

      A quick and dirty way of calculating the approximate, mileage may vary frontal area of a car is that it's 85% of area of the rectangle you get by multiplying the height of the car with the width.
      The angle of the windshield affects how the air flows downstream over the roof of the car. Simplified more vertical means more turbulence and the air not "sticking" to the roof, means more drag and probably even more negative lift(EDIT:not negative but positive) at the rear of the car. One would probably get more improvement to the drag coefficient in terms of how much work is needed with managing the airflow through and out of the engine bay and especially the front and rear wheel wells and within the constraints of the chassis and suspension and exhaust etc, under the car. But most important is the flow separation or whatever it's called at the rear of the car just like a Beetle or a 911.

      You just get a bit of "rocking" of the engine at low rpms.

      @@Calvin-Nelson very interested in that project I can give u a great customer build content. I have a custom one off lifted trailblazer... I build custom suspensions for a living. I'm actually in the process of building a marketable bolt on 6/7.5 lift (no body lift) to mass produce because we have nothing available on the market except a leveling kit for a trailblazer. I love my lil truck i just hate how sluggish it is... especially compared to my beloved infinti vq platform cars that I have. I would love to get that feeling of my q50 out of my trailblazer.... everyone is telling me "just ls swap it" that's not going to get it for me. A little to cookie cutter for my liking, I don't consider myself to be a conventional guy lol... I like different. Finding ur channel was like discovering a new favorite food to me... I never new that it existed but now that I've tasted it, it's my new favorite dish. I was actually looking at doing an ats-v swap but now I'm interested in knowing more about what is truly available for my stock 4.2

    why don't you guys do a 5cyl version of the vortec inline series in this car? volvo has a history of 5cyls and it would be lighter and shorter so it would fit better 😉

    • @Calvin-Nelson
      @Calvin-Nelson  2 роки тому +2

      A couple reasons. By the time you add the weight of the dual balance shafts system, the 5 cylinder is probably similar in weight. Also, while it would be really cool to keep the 5 cylinder theme, I'd like to put the Ameri-Barra up against the real Barras which will be attending Sick Week. Lastly, I'd like to make a fair amount of power and having as little stress per cylinder would be ideal

    He just wrecked this in Sick Week 2023
    @ South Georgia Motorsports Park.
    He is alert, asking questions, asked what he ran through the traps prior to the wreck.
    Car was in near lane racing a Triumph with twins. Past the 1000/maybe past the trap (I'm on fence at 120ft) a huge cloud of smoke from the engine bay. He got out of the groove and it got sideways he corrected and it was just too much and it tumbled, end over end and landed on its end and momentarily burst into flames.
    He rolled and tumbled OVER the guard rail and ended up on the fence in the roll off.
    That's where we are at it's 11:39am, 2 ambulances and dozens of track staff down there.
    I'm not religious but he has my version of a prayer
