Hence the periodic straight out copying the way Simpson dressed- the O interview & the Dior back in England.

David’s obsession with Wally’s likely has to do with the void of affection his mother never gave to him when he was growing up. Studying the dynamics of each Windsor generation from Queen Victoria to current times is fascinating to observe from the psychologists point of view.
I could go into it, already tried, but it took at least 4 lengthy paragraphs of just the history of this family. So far I’d say William and Catherine are such a blessing to see them handle parenthood well while managing to take on more royal duties, despite a certain uncle acting more like Scar from the Lion King.

It seems that William and Catherine are the hope for the monarchy, if KC could abdicate before he is doddering and they are old. I don't think Harry cares as much about being king as Meghan would want to be queen. Her jealousy of Catherine oozes from her and she has been seen trying to be flirty with William and he quickly distanced himself. William has all the characteristics of a king--professional, quick thinking, great sense of humor, cares and speaks with people with thought and care.

Great to have you back!!! David - when Prince of Wales was known to be lazy and cherry pick what he wanted to do before Wallis was on the scene. When Edward VIII - he was still lazy and neglectful of his duties with Wallis the country and responsibilities were the last thing on his mind!! He would have been a weak and dreadful King. His brother Albert later to become King George VI was brave and faced his fears with such courage that he inspired a nation. King George VI with his family was the King that we deserved and needed at the time and then followed by Elizabeth II. My Grandmother met the King and Queen during the Blitz - she always said it was part of God’s plan that it should be this way and I must agree with her.

Washington is a very humid place; you could be experiencing an allergy to mold. My husband developed full-blown asthma as a result of exposure to mold during a visit to Washington (well, friends in Maryland, actually).
I'm looking forward to hearing more about Edward's behind the scenes behavior next week, but it reminds me of how little we actually knew about Harry, compared to what we THOUGHT we knew. He had all sorts of bad behaviour, and it was covered up, so that when we saw him unfiltered, it was a shock. What's worse is to remember that the people who knew him and experienced his sullen moods and temper tantrums *put up with it* for years. Such is the cachet of royalty, and it must have been even worse back in the 30s.

You have to understand the absolute power sex has over some people. They will move heaven and earth, do anything, say anything, sacrifice anything, including people, in the pursuit of satisfying their desires. Years ago a friend of mine who had a good marriage lost it after her husband got back from Vietnam. He told her she would never be able to do for him what he experienced over there. He was totally selfish and not interested in a normal loving relationship. She finally gave up and let him go. He spent the rest of his miserable life in his endless depraved quest for satisfaction. For a long time she thought it was her fault, but found happiness with a good man.I think Wallis fulfilled his wildest desires, but became bored with him early on. The war ensued, and by the time it was over, she was just old and not in any position to attract another man. He was a shallow, greedy, selfish, spoiled, entitled, lazy, low IQ fool--not unlike Half-Wit. Someone should write a book about both couples.

The same with my eyes, I couldn't hear, I was dull and listless, constantly. I was also told that I was not meeting reading and writing standards and was dim. Today as an older person, if I don't keep on top of the allergies, I can soon start suffering from a range of sinus problems. I was born in the 1950s. Today, there are treatments available. Welcome back!
Allergies are not fun. Dust could be the culprit but the new climate can present its own array of allergens. I’m a midwest farm girl who sniffled through July and August when the ragweed was in full bloom. Since moving to FL, i have MAYBE 6 weeks without sneezing, sniffling and having eyes that look like i just broke up with a high school boyfriend! Changing seasons, climates and unpacking? You’re doing amazingly well!
I read the whole book over the summer and will gladly go back to each chapter with you. (I’ve been waiting and filling the days with Tudor history🙄😮) Without giving anything away, any comparison between Harry’s wife and Wallis will find Harry’s wife to be even more awful and Wallis being (except for the Nazi stuff) gracious, avoiding scandal for a good long while and accepting of the mess she found herself in. Frivolous, materialistic and aloof, yes, but not cursing the family of her husband. She lives a privileged life and seemed to respect the way she achieved it but seldom pulled attention to herself by seeking pity. Whereas Harry’s wife manipulated and orchestrated her life and his to be in a position to bemoan what she’s lost and given up, Mrs Simpson was the one who found herself the pawn in Edward’s game, a piece that was useful to him but not the best move for her.
I found the book rather dry so am counting on you and us to make it a “juicier” story.; all the elements are there!

Prior to this book I knew very little about this duo aside from the abdication & a smattering of their controversies which (I thought) could’ve been exaggerated by propaganda of the times. Boy was I wrong Nevertheless, as selfish, self-serving & delusional as the Windsors proved to be..(what could be worse than shmoozing nazi’s😵)…comparing their saga, warts & all, to H&M’s virtuosity only highlights the fact that history will not be kind to the Sussex 2😬

So excited to see you back. As an elementary school teacher of 30 years, I love the way you explain the novels to us listeners. Wallis and Edward are a fascinating couple. I have read about every book on these two. Best of luck with 4th. The novels Number the Stars, Tuck Everlasting, The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, and Where the Red Fern Grows, are some of my favorite books that I have taught for this grade.

So happy you are back, have really missed your content.
Great you have now found a home.
The fact David's being in bed with the Nazis was kept pretty quiet for decades. The problem with the abdication was his behaviour was kept quiet to the masses unlike the upper classes and government who knew what David was really like.
Unfortunately there are a lot of similarities between David and Harry, both married American divorcees ( British public did not care about M colour it was what havoc the last American marrying into the RF caused that made people distrustful of her ).
Mentally David and Harry ate similar and both a bit work shy ) If RF survived Mrs Simpson I think it can survive M.
By the way not sure what David did during WW1 but his brother later George VI served and was at the Battle of Jutland.
Unfortunately David gave a number of Royal jewels to Wallace, which were sold off after she died not returned to the RF, David did not have the right to give away family stuff.

Great to see you again, but please don't overdo things- look after yourself and your family first. Dust allergy- yup, perfectly possible, used to have a reaction which involved swelling of lips, ear lobes, upper palate- horrible but over the counter anti- histamine sorted it. Re the book- my grandparents especially, but also my parents who were very young in the 1930s used to say how lucky the country was that Mrs S. came along and 'pinched our King' because as a result we got the infinitely better brother, who reigned with dignity and courage at such a difficult time for the country. Have never doubted that they were right.

Cheere, I just want to say again that I'm so glad both you and your family are fine, and that you're back again! You nailed it as usual. I don't think Wallis ever intended for Edward to give up the throne for her -- in fact, I've read that she begged him not to. My only criticism of the book so far, is that I'm disappointed the author didn't start at the beginning -- and tell us about E & W's childhoods and young adulthood. That's how I like my biographies -- when we can sort of grow up with the person, and learn about their early lives and how they reacted to it. Then you can better understand why they made some of their choices later on. I just think it gives you a fuller picture of them. But I will continue to listen, because I love hearing your thoughts! 😊

I don’t think he had any clue what he had actually done. In his speech when he said he wouldn’t be back in the country for a while. I think he actually thought he would come back to ‘fort’ after a year or so and live happily ever after. He just did not comprehend how as an ex king, he can’t live in the same country as the current king. It seems like he thought he could come back and advise his brother on how to do the job he gave up. He was such an extremely naive and immature man.

This sounds like a good book. Had no idea Simpson had such disdain for him.
Except for a few particulars, the names Edward and Harry, and Wallis and Meghan, could really be interchangeable.
It definitely was the chase for Wallis; but I feel she would have been tickled pink to be by David’s side…if she could have been queen.
Which, again, makes me think of Meghan…who, I truly believe, thought she could become the Queen of the Commonwealth. (Tbh, I think Meghan has always been ticked off that she would never be called “Princess”…I could be wrong.)

Cheere, maybe you should get one of those air purifiers for your new place, to pull allergens out of the air, in addition to having an antihistamine on hand, as others have recommended. The people of Great Britain, and indeed, the world, should have thanked Wallis for getting that man out of the country. She actually did a great service to a nation. I have read it was her great personality that drew men to her. I suspect Edward was sexually attracted to her dominance. For some men in high positions where everyone cowtows to them, being a submissive is the ultimate perverse pleasure.

I think that David thought he could have it all. He saw his brother Berty as weak and easily pliable. So maybe he believed he could rule through Berty and have Wallis. However, he didn’t realize the mortal enemy he and Wallis had made in Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She also blamed him for Berty’s early death, regardless that he smoked 5 packs of cigarettes a day. She held enormous power over her daughter, even though QEII did soften a bit at the end of her Uncle’s life.

I remember reading a book as a tween and it referenced the abdication of the throne and at the time it was largely seen as an incredibly romantic gesture. So interesting to hear the backstory!
I’ve seen a PBS documentary on Wallis’ letters and it was a long time ago I watched but David (she called him) was not her great love for certain. Interesting how the public digests a story (seeing it as a great romance) and the reality is there is no great love-at least on Wallis’ part. I think she got roped into a situation she didn’t want to be in by marrying Edward/David and went through with the marriage to save face. (You say as much in this video).
Weird I have a swollen right lip too. Mine is explainable though not allergies (glue from a bit of paper tore the top layer of skin of my lip off hence the swelling). I have one-sided “bee sting” lips now.
Thanks Denise. Looking forward to hearing more. I know this is a fascinating story and at the time it happened it was HUGE and resonated as a great romantic story for many years (maybe even decades) afterwards.
