Xoloitzcuintles were a sacred breed for the Aztecs. They were believed to guard human souls through their passage to the Mictlán, the land of dead people. It is an ancient and beautiful breed.
this dog is more than 7 thousand years old. In Mexica mythology, it was believed that the Xoloitzcuintles accompanied the souls of the deceased when they traveled to Mictlán, the underworld, for which they were sacrificed and buried. along with the dead they were to guide. There are legends that speak that Xolotl gave the xoloitzcuintle as a gift to man, after having manufactured it from a splinter of the Bone of Life, the bone from which all life was created. Because of this, the Mexica considered it sacred, and this adoration was manifested in many sculptural and pictographic representations. It is said that the gods had to descend to Mictlán and obtain a bone that would make the formation of humanity possible. Xólotl volunteered to perform such a feat, although that will involve transforming himself into a dog; the Xoloitzcuintle. Xólotl was represented as a man with the head of a dog, representing the nocturnal face of Venus accompanying the sun on its way to the underworld. After sunset, the star king died and fought with his help to be reborn at dawn. Since then this animal became the favorite of the gods. When the objective was accomplished, he appeared before the dreadful Mictlantecuhtli, the lord of Death, and presented him with the prized bone. Then, the Xoloitzcuintle returned to the world of the living and the gods were able to create the first man and the first woman. The Mexica tradition pointed out that it should be completely black, because if it had spots on its body this said that it had already served to the soul of another deceased. In addition, for the Mexica people, the Xoloitzcuintle had the ability to ward off and protect homes from evil spirits, but since everything was duality for them, it also represented an evil side since it was identified with disease and physical deformities.
I own both! I had a hairless car first, then rescued a hairless puppy from Puerto Rico after hurricane Maria. Check them out on Instagram! @RubiTheXolo

Dark Howler animals that do not have hair like hairless cats or cats that are meant to have Marcel's which are the little rippled hair like a Rex cat but come out bald have extremely high sebaceous glands so wherever they lay they leave a dark brown ring of greasy sebaceous wax. They get covered with blackheads because of it some more than others it depends on the family and the quality of breeding. Also what diet they're on but every Rex cat or Sphynx cat I've ever known had blackheads on its tail and the bald always leave a great big greasy spot on your sheets or pillow or blanket or couch or wherever they're sleeping so it's not all fun and games they promise.
Hairless breeds require high maintenance. They suffer from alot of skin issues from dryness to chaffing and even skin conditions and can end up with cancers. You have to be careful with everything in ur home from carpeting (the starches and dyes can cause severe allergic or some reaction to there skin) even what u put on ur skin as they tend to rub against there human counterparts and depending on the climate your in also depends on if they would require actual clothing or wrapped to hold in body heat or to protect. They can even scratch themselves causing infections and so forth.. they need to be in a pretty sterile environment. They can in fact get fleas since fleas nest and rest on the body and skin of animals and without hair will burrow under the skin if need be..this why a home without animals can have fleas they can live on humans and your furniture.
@@RebaMiran, yeah, but think of how easy it would be to find the ticks. My friend has two border collies and with the hair they have, there could be ticks buried anywhere and you wouldn't find them. In not a fan of that squeaky bark though, annoying noises are always a deciding factor.
For me the Xolo and the Bull Terrier are the most beautiful looking dogs. All dogs are beautiful 😍, but something about their looks is weirdly gorgeous to me.
As someone who lives in a hot country and is absolutely used to take care of myself due to the scorching sun here, having a spa session with my dog and massaging oil into their skin is something I would be delighted to do. I'm already so used to it, and it certainly helps a lot.
They’re absolutely precious. My aunt has one. She got him after losing both of her Dobermans. They’re very energetic and chaotic. Somewhat hard to train so you have to start young. Their skin needs to be properly moisturized because there’s barely any fur to protect it. They do have an adorable mohawk! They’re lovable and cuddly once you get over the feeling of their skin lol. I think they’re absolutely adorable and unique. High maintenance but worth the work.

This was so hard to watch because I’ve had my 2 Xolo’s (miniature) brother and sister for 8yrs and my little girl passed away 3 weeks ago. It was unexpected and it has really taken a toll on me and my heart, and her brother has finally started coming around the last few days. Anyone thinking of getting these beautiful dogs don’t hesitate because they are amazing! They are highly intelligent, easy to train, and extremely loyal. My little girl was hairless, and her brother was born with black fur. They were so close and constantly loved on each other. They did everything together. My little girl would lay with me whenever I had an upset tummy and her warmth always helped. I miss her so much but I know she’s in Heaven awaiting my return. God Bless! 🙏🏻❤️

My Xolo is just the best dog I ever had. His name is Ehecatl, as the Aztek God of the Winds... This breed indeed has something different than other dogs, I do believe they have other type of connection with us. Nice video, thanks for it!
I don’t think they are Aztec, more like Egyptian, you will find them in the Egyptians statues or in the Egyptian hieroglyphs as Anubis the god of death
@@pepepepino9485 yes, bit egyptians didn't have hairless dogs. Those one can see in their statues are from the family of the greyhounds, so it says the mummies found in the pharaohs tumbs. And the xolo has 7000 years at least in skeletons found and 5000 years recorded in archeological findings offering xolos to Xolotl, God of destruction and rebirth.
In aztec culture they are hairless bc they help the souls to pass to Mictlan where dead stay but in the way they burn themselves with the infernal fires so they lose their hair

Got her from a rescue as a pup. She's so adorable. Having said all that, these Xolos are magnificent. I've seen pics of Xolos before but didn't know what they were. (No offense or love lost for our wonderful Staffie...sorry, my Horizon.) Xolos are magnificent.

Wait a minute... My boy is Mexican, believed to lead people to the after life... like Anubis from Egypt. Are you telling me that the Ancient Mexicans and ancient Egyptians have the same image for for the God of the after life. Does anyone else think that's very unique considering both cultures were very forward for their times. Or am I a conspirancist?
Xolotl was the god of the lightning, death and monstrosities he had many jobs one of them was protecting the sun from the dangers of the underworld,he looks like a human with the head of a dog or skeleton. besides helping protect the sun he would help guide the dead on a journey to Mictlan ( the underworld) and had 2 spirit animal forms the Xoloitzcuintli which is the dog you see here, and the Axolotl (water-dog) the water salamander that looks like a pokemon
Stunningly beautiful! Frieda Kahlo had several xolos. They occur in her paintings too. Beautiful dogs, and of the most ancient dog category (together with breeds like circeno del Etna, Pharao dogs etc). Their cousins the Peruvian Hairless is very similar and they're both so old it's impossible to tell which came first, they're likely only recently (relatively speaking) separate, the same stock.
According to an ancient legend, those who in life have mistreated a dog, will never cross the Apanohuaia river, for Xolotl, the god of twilight and his dog, Xoloitzcuintle will never help that ungrateful soul to reach Mictlan, the land of the dead.
He’s kind of like the Anubis Egyptian deity of hell and crossing over as well There is also the Greek version of Hades ruling the underworld with Cerberus the three headed dog, Whatever floats your boat I guess if your straight more so
Xoloitzcuintli literally translates to dog of the God of the dead. The God of death was said to give this to mankind. To me, Anubis looks more like a xolo than a jakal.
Xolotl plays a key role in the Underworld, Xolotl is related to the Death, lightning, fire, misfortune, Venus, etc. Xolotl was responsible for accompanying the dead to Mictlán (Underworld), their final journey after death. Xolotl also guarded the sun as it made its way through the underworld every night. There could be similar things between Anubis and Xolotl, but please leave Egypt in Egypt, *THIS IS NATIVE MESOAMERICAN CULTURE!!!* Mesoamerican pantheon and mythology is quite deep and rich by itself... besides, remember that Anubis have the head of jackal, not a dog.
Don't kill me, but I don't like dogs. 1. Walkink in the city, one has to walk around dogs because they own the space. Unlike free street dog's. 2. They make poop 👟💩on the pavement. 3. The smell, on rainy days. This Mexican dog is very very beautiful anyway 😃👌very very beautiful !!!
I didn't particularly care for the black lab that put me in the hospital while I was on a normal jog in a suburban neighborhood. I think it's easy not to love "any" and "every" dog. No offense.
Anubis was the god of the underworld. He had the head of a Jackal. The Basenji (6000 years ago) is cited as inspiration. The Saluki goes back at least 5000 years, as does the Pharaoh Hound, the loyal Egyptian hunting dog of the aristocracy. These are some of the oldest domesticated dogs. 🙂
They don't suffer from the genetic horrors breeders have created over the last couple of centuries. They have a healthy breeding population with enough diversity to avoid some of the genetic traps of inbreeding for the sake of "confirmation". As they become popular, that will change.
@@macnutz4206 My parents spoke on the same thing, we had a dog, can't recall the breed, but it was fairly rare and supposedly from a very strong one. Very beautiful, lasted for nearly 30 years. If I ever get a dog, it'll probably be a very rare one.

@@gomezaddams6470 it helps to wash them and apply a non-toxic breathable oil/moisurizer to their skin.
He could get ticks tho
@@RebaMiran, yeah, but think of how easy it would be to find the ticks. My friend has two border collies and with the hair they have, there could be ticks buried anywhere and you wouldn't find them. In not a fan of that squeaky bark though, annoying noises are always a deciding factor.
