Aladdin deserved more Tony recognition
Waitress! It just happened to be in the year of Hamilton, but oh man, that musical deserved more
Definitely "Come From Away." It's an underrated show, and was overshadowed by "Dear Evan Hansen" at the Tony Awards.
Absolutely agree. I think CFA is far superior to DEH
What about Into The Woods? It lost so many awards to Phantom of the Opera! Great show, but Into The Woods deserved some of those awards more
Best Musical is awarded to producers based on the production, not the actual material (whereas Best Play is given to the playwright based on the script). ITW is a far better musical than Phantom (which is why it won both book and score), but that Harold Prince was a damn good storyteller.
To me, a lot of these are not snubs. A snub is when a musical or a play is not nominated at all and it’s fantastic. It’s just not a snub when you have two fantastic shows, both nominated for many awards, and one wins more Tony awards than the other, maybe even sweeping the Tony’s. Some musicals are just going to edge out other ones even if they are all successful and fantastic. That’s the way awards go.
Thank you. Agree 💯
I think Something Rotten got robbed. My brother and his husband both perform on Broadway. I see A LOT of shows. Something Rotten is my all time favorite.
I completely agree it's one of the most underrated shows on Broadway love this show
Thank you for the update, MsMojo..!! "Wicked" not winning the Tony Awards' Best Musical is shocking. @.@ I had to look into "Thoroughly Modern Millie", and confirmed that one won the Best Musical Award back in 2002.
Watch Nathan Lane’s reaction when he announced Avenue Q as the winner, he was stunned
I will never forgive the Tony Awards for what they did to The Lightning Thief musical. In a season when barely any shows opened because of COVID, a show that brought a whole new crowd to musical theater was completely shafted, even in categories where there were no other shows to be nominated. Even if critics weren’t fans, it still had value.
Legally Blonde. Come From Away too, but Legally Blonde. That show deserves so much more love. I myself prefer it to the original movie 🤐
Agree. I’ve watched videos from the workshop onward. Jerry Mitchell and that cast deserved so much more!
The Wiz got snubbed largely because they actually did not have a press night and they asked press not to come. I have no idea why, but I do know a critic who said that the press were expressly, told they were not to come, unless they wanted to buy their own tickets, and they were highly discouraged from formally reviewing the show, and I think this put a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouth. because that’s just not ever the norm, especially if you want to win a Tony award. Tickets are usually provided for critics on a press night, and those who reviewed the show had to buy their own tickets and review it in an informal way, which is not ever really done.
I have also heard that, but having seen it on tour, it just wasn't very good. Disappointing in almost every way for me. In a less crowded season they may have managed a few noms but I wasn't terribly surprised or disappointed on their behalf.
The stage version of the Wiz was basically just Wizard of Oz with different music. The movie gave it a more unique quality by setting it in urban surroundings.
How is AIDA not even on the honorable mentions?! Its snub for even a Best Musical nomination (which, it very likely would have won had it been nominated) is one of the biggest snubs - largely due to a very blatant result of anti-Disney bias at the time. Esp. since it essentially swept almost every category it was nominated for.
how can something "very likely would have won" if it couldn't even get nominated? The book isn't great and the original direction and staging were uneven. Three pretty crucial areas for a best musical win.
@@davidavancleaveit’s pretty simple: everyone saw its omission as a deliberate product of the anti-Disney bias at the time.
@@ColtonMyers1 I think it being an overall mediocre musical, despite having some strong designs and a killer performance from HH is more logical but okay. 🤷🏻♂️ People are always hating on Disney for one reason or another
I didn’t know the Metropolitan Opera was eligible - and when has there been a really great new production of Verdi‘s masterpiece?
Seriously - I love Elton John, but he should have taken on a different piece. When the original is perfect, you don’t need a new version.
Anastasia, hands down, didn't get the recognition at the 2017 Tonys. It was nominated for its costumes and Mary Beth Peil's performance but didn't win them. I remember seeing it on Broadway and was blown away. It was truly magical!
2017 was a tough year, between Hello, Dolly and DEH it was highly competitive
"Snubbed" means no recognition whatsoever. These shows were nominated and even won awards!
Soon as I saw the title of this video, I thought, Come From Away!! I have to say I was also captured by Dear Evan Hansen. Living in Oregon I only get my Broadway news/music from SiriusXM, I only heard DEH songs and loved them. It wasn't until about a year later did I fall in love with CFA! I even flew to NYC to see it twice!! I have probably seen the movie 30 times!!
I think Something Rotten! Is one of the most underrated shows on Broadway should have won more awards than it did
I feel like ragtime was snubbed (even though it isn’t on the list) it won best score and best book but not best musical losing to lion king. I have nothing against lion king but that show is thriving while Ragtime hasn’t gotten on broadway since. It is incredible and I hope the off broadway revival gets to broadway
Actually there was a revival in 2009-10. It only lasted for a couple of months but got seven Tony noms (no wins). I was lucky enough to see that production before it closed, and I loved it, despite a few trims to a few of the songs. But you’re right, it deserves more recognition!
Don't get me wrong, I love Come From Away, but I'm glad Dear Evan Hansen won; partially because I could relate to the character's struggles
Nevertheless, both musicals are fantastic
Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 losing to Dear Evan Hansen is something that legitimately bothers me to this day. Hadestown sweeping the Tonys and Evan Hansen’s movie completely bombing made me feel a little better. I can’t lie.
The Wiz, the music, choreography, vocals 🥰 I’ve seen Les Mis and Chicago both are good but The Wiz 🎉 it was my first time seeing it and I really enjoyed it.
Ave Q was unique and hysterical. Come from away Also had a unique story line
Definitely Grease. Happy thursday afternoon, Emily. Take care and God bless you, greetings from Colombia to you as well.
In some of these cases; like Wicked vs Avenue Q & Come From Away vs Dear Evan Hansen; it's a tricky battle when there's more than 1 fantastic show worthy of the win
The channel Wait in the Wings has a video on what happened for Wicked to lose. It wasn't due to it being the better show.
Isn't that George Salazar, not Will Roland in Be More Chill?
The Great Gatsby and Jeremy Jordan from this years awards. It’s bad enough to leave out the musical, itself. There were alot of great releases this last year. But to snub Jeremy and his phenomenal talent and incomparable voice is pure blasphemy.
Yes, on the Wicked snub. Look up Wait in the Wings' video for the BTS on that. Avenue Q launched the Broadway equivalent of an attack campaign against Wicked with the Tony voters. There were no explicit rules at the time on what materials nominated shows could send to Tony voters, but they changed the practice after that year because of how underhanded and mean spirited the Avenue Q team was. Wicked definitely has the last laugh 20+ years later though.
Amazing list
Come From Away should have gotten its flowers, but those gash darn Canadians were too nice to tell Evan Hansen to step aside!!
Yep - we Canadians can be nice to a fault.
How are a lot of these considered snubs when most of them have been nominated, some of them even won Tony awards albeit only technical ones?
I agree with everything in this video except for Wicked. I have seen the show myself on Broadway but I just wasn't much of a fan of most of the characters, especially Glinda. I was not too fond of the show since most of the music was bubble gum pop (not my style), and most of the show's characters (except Elphaba) were one dimension. Also when people saw Lea Michele sing Defying Gravity on Glee every girl was trying to hit the high note at every talent show it made me want to not hear that song ever again. I can see why everyone enjoys the show and I can respect that but for me, it was just alright.
thank god the lion king wasn’t snubbed at the tony’s awards it won a lot of tony awards ❤
The Prom! I loved it so much that I was so mad it didn’t win at least one of the seven nominations it got!
Also mad that the Falsettos revival didn’t win at least one Tony (although if I’m being honest, Ben Platt deserved the Tony for Best Lead Actor in a Musical imo).
Also Gutenberg was overlooked! That show was funny and brought me so much joy!
I saw wicked twice in Los Angeles and one in San Diego California
"Ragtime" losing to "The Lion King" and "Gypsy" losing to "The Sound of Music" AND "Fiorello!"
Even in London, Miss Saigon didn't get the best new musical award. The Olivier Award went to a forgotten show called 'Return To The Forbidden Planet'
I remember seeing that forgotten show! I had no idea it was in the same era. We saw it my first time in London.
The original production of Follies, the most expensive at the time, won every ward a musical could win until it came to best Book For A Musical, which went to Two Gentlemen Of Verona. Unfortunatetly Mr.Shakeseare was unable to attend.
I feel like the more popular something is with general audiences, the less likely it is to get even a nom these days. Not to mention several amazing performers who either get the nom again and again and again without ever getting the win or simply get passed over despite incredible performances (*cough* we all have our faves who could be mentioned here). Idk maybe it’s just me but I feel like the Tonys have grown incredibly distant from actual audience enjoyment in favor of more ‘artsy’ and ‘daring’ productions which, while can be spectacular, are often a bit alienating to people who just want to go enjoy a show with good music and performances, which might be just what Broadway needs to recover from the pandemic. Just my thoughts though. I didn’t get to see all the noms this year. But I know I preferred some productions that got completely snubbed over others who garnered six or more nominations. 😅
The COME FROM AWAY snub was the worst for me.
I adore Wicked, but Avenue Q is the better show. It deserved best musical. Come from Away was robbed.
The Lightning Thief hands down. There were only 4 musicals eligible for awards that year and some of the snubs just felt petty, like best original score (the other 3 shows were Jukebox musicals so they had to give the nominations to plays instead) and best lead actor in a musical (which made Aaron Tveit the only nominee in the category)
A chorus line is incredible. The movie is a travisty. Rock of ages was the same
Dear Evan Hansen was so overrated! Loved the music/songs but the story was terrible! How the hell did the Tony's thought the story wasn't problematic???
Hurray for Avenue Q - love it!
Winning only 1 Tony or getting nominated and not winning any Tony's is still better than not getting nominated at all
The Lightning Thief, they did so dirty, especially to Chris McCarrell
a Chorus Line won many tonys (the movie was a poor adaptation of the great musical)
Something Rotten is a phenomenal show it should have won more awards than it did
I saw The Wiz revival and nearly walked out. I thought it was awful and I'm not surprised it was overlooked. I'm not a very critical person--I like almost everything. That production felt very amateur (my opinion).
I thought we weren't supposed to call them "soundtracks"?!?
how is the notebook not nominated for best musical like cmon dude
I couldn't hate "Come From Away" more. Its success is completely dependant on the emotion response from Americans hurting from a tragic attack. If everyone just stepped back and looked at the show objectively they would realize what a piece of trash it is.
Last year’s Sweeney Todd, was beyond disappointed it didn’t receive best revival
Of the list the only true snub was Victor/Victoria, such a great show
My favorite wicked 🖤🩷
Mamma mia
I will not stand for any slander against Avenue Q and A Chorus Line 😭. I absolutely Love Chicago and Wicked, but tbh, the emotional cores and messages of Avenue Q and A Chorus Line (and the topics they cover, in particular in regards to the time they were made: context reigns supreme) are enough to edge out the competition and justify their wins in their respective years.
Miss Saigon is one of my favorite..
Just like the Oscar voters do the people that vote actually watch the nominated shows I think not it’s amazing that the original West Side Story didn’t win best musical but swept the Oscars
The person that made this list clearly did not actually sit through The Wiz this season. It got zero nominations and that's exactly what it deserved with it's unwelming design. And while the performances were fantastic, it was just way to stacked a season fr performances to make the cut. But the design was.... really really not good.
i may be in the minority, but i think a show that discusses 9/11 in the city where 9/11 happened was never going to be favored by new yorkers. i get come from away was talking about the community coming together in canada. but it was still one of, if not, the worst tragedies in american history.
Did you actually see the show? A 9/11 musical sounds like a terrible idea, if you've never seen it, which you should. It was moving and uplifting, particularly for those who have visceral memories of those days.
Anastasia!!
How to Dance in Ohio!!!
Were these shows snubbed or was there just more than one good show in their year
Please stop referring to cast albums as soundtracks.
I saw The Wiz. I was one of those who was underwhelmed. A lot of changes that I did not care for.
Stephen Sondheim was often ahead of his time unfortunately.
The Chorus Line film was awful!
Stage musicals don’t have a soundtrack.
Be more chill is not in the same league as the rest on this list sorry not sorry
Great. Comet.
Bonnie and Clyde and Victor/Victoria just were not very good shows. The book for both of them are not good.
Stephen Schwartz deserved the Tony for Wicked. The Avenue Q puppet show is already stale and dated.
Snubbed???
Top 10 Shows that Desere More Tonys, Top 10 Should have won Best Musical
Shucked
My Mom grew up acting and got me into it very young. It was fun as a kid but how any adult can get on a stage and pretend is just silly to me. I love role playing in games and acting in movies is awesome. It's just stage plays that are kiddy and unimpressive to me. I know many get their start that way but they return to it out of fun. I don't see the fun in it after doing many plays. It was just, boring. So I stopped
Oh look its a remake of a white movie
